In this #ButterSuspension we took some forks to the ultimate weight and stress test for your viewing pleasure. Did you expect that level of flex from the #Bolany ?
The real story here is that milk crates can hold 500lbs.
What I learned is we need to be making forks out of milk crates... Holy cow!

@@ButterSuspension That was the first thing I thought after the first fork. Great science, but I'm gonna need the brand name on that milk crate.
During a crash, there isn't a constant force. It's instantaneous force similar to a car crash or any other crash.
It would be a derivative of acceleration which is jerk and the derivative of that is jounce or snap.
In order to simulate this, you would need to load up the weights and then instantaneously "drop" the weight onto your test rig.
This can be done by preloading the weights up to a certain weight and then dropped that onto the axle which would better simulate this vs static loading which is what you are doing here and what was done here is essentially testing the flexural or tensile modulus.
You can do a three point test (ASTM D790) on the stanchion itself after you are doing with the drop test to see what the material properties are and the yield point. Not sure if you have the equipment to do that or not but that would be more definitive.
for your next test, you could use a come-along instead of a basket of weights, that way you wouldn't run out of force. You would need a good floor anchor though.

For a given fork, yes, since the lever arm is longer. This is why bigger travel modern forks have bigger leg diameters.
What was the final weight on the bolaney you never showed it
I think it was around 410lbs...

Pretty sure any fork at or around $130 is gonna be about the same quality and strength...
They are all made from the same factory 🏭. I'm in contact with a few of the brands.

Get an angle finder placed onto the stanchion and like every hundred pounds or so see how much things have flexed.
I know it's a older model fox but I'll be honest I cringed and cried seeing you do this
Old Talas forks are unsupported by Fox...plus the stanchions were worn out. Useable product was not destroyed!
Could you face the forks downward next time, to bend the fork in the direction that a huck to flat would bend them instead of crashing into a tree?
Yes I believe it should be facing the opposite side. As when the fork is on the bike the load is pushing up.

Just finished watching the whole video, very interesting demonstration of strength between the different models. I did have this thought though. The static (load applied in your test) vs dynamic (load applied while Just Riding Along) forces seem to be two disparate loads.There's a higher peak load while riding the fork. Any way to convert the static load measurements into an approximation of a dynamic load? Maybe we could use this data to figure out how much force was applied to this fork when it failed?

The link you posted was what inspired this video! Santa Cruz did a dynamic frame test that I'd like to recreate but they have a little bit bigger budget...
