    I put one of these forks on my 12 year old son's bike and it has worked flawlessly for his riding. Most spring forks are too stiff for light riders, this fits the bill perfectly for them.

    You can get an idea by the way the smeash weight jumps back up, as to wich one performed better.
    It is not a quantitative measurement, but the fork with less rebound had more plastic deformation going on.

    I love your videos. I have a cannondale.cad3 frame that I had a friend assemble into a mountain bike 25 years ago. It has 26 inch wheels and rim brakes. I love this frame and really want to rebuild it for modern use in nh trails.
    I have not kept up with mountain bike technology and have no idea what parts to use. I road this a lot back in the day and cassette and front rings are.worn out and fork is garbage at this point.
    I don't know which parts will fit but am mechanical (fix my own mc and cars).
    Will 27.5 inch new wheels and the.fork you are testing and a front hydraulic brake work? I have a welder but dont have the confidence to weld a disc brake mount on the rear so figure a rim brake or.adapter might be good enough.
    I need a new cassette and gears too and might as well get new derailleurs.
    Any advice? At least related to changing to 27.5 wheels from 26? I can get vuelleta (spelling??) Wheels for under $200

    The BOLANY brand of fork here in the Philippines is considered a joke of a fork (arch breaks easily, stanchions breaking in half, very hazardous, etc.) -- ppl here tend to lean towards the Suntour Epixon or Manitou Markhor .. or if futher in a budget, the XCR Suntour fork non air, coil version (those 3 i recommend for the walmart bike you bought recently heh)

      Some users tho doesn't even experience this. Knew some people using them for a couple of years but still works perfectly fine.
      Might be some factory defects or what not. But we will never know.
      Maybe the company listened to the feedbacks/review made the forka a little bit better.

The prices are also a lot different, the balony retails for around $80-90 here in Asia...the xcr air around $120 but i guess shipping them to the US is more expnsive than frpm Taiwan to us neighbor countries

    An interesting video for sure!
    I am bad at addition, but between the price of the Kent and the upgrades, it seems like you are in around a grand? I have within the last year bought two beginner-class HTs (a Rocky Mountain Fusion 29er and a 26.5' Polygon* Xtrada-6). Each was slightly under a grand, and came equipped with parts about equal in quality to what you added to the Kent. In fact, the Fusion came with the same Microshift Advent rear mech, which has shifted FLAWLESSLY for about a year. Both are lots of fun to ride on trails that while not scary by Seth standards, are certainly above beginner level. This might be a good alternative for people who would have to pay a mechanic to install some of these upgrades.
    *I am definitely a support-your-LBS person, but no local shop currently has bikes in this price range in anything but too small or too big.

    Is there a reason you are inserting the forks into a metal tube before clamping down? If you could clamp to the steerer tube itself you would have way more consistent results and the weight wouldn't keep getting deflected when it hits the fork and makes it rotate.

    • @tobins6800
      @tobins6800 2 роки тому +4

      Several things. 1. During riding, a hard hit will deflect the front end. 2. Clamping directly to the stanchion will influence the test amd also introducing a new failure point (the clamps are toothed and more than likely a harder material than the stanchions). I'd rather see a tighter tolerance for bar or some semblance of bearing. PVC pipe might do to fill the gap.

    Those Bolany, ZTZ, Lutu, and Bucklos forks seem to use the same parts. I had a Bucklos air fork for my 90lb son. It was smooth out of the box, but it got lots of stiction after 1 trail ride. I tried regreasing the stantions but that only helped for a really short time. The stiction is even too much for little kids and exasperates the small bumps.
    If going budget fork, go for the Suntour air fork. My old Epixon is still working flawless and smooth as ever...I did regrease the stantions and oil the foam rings and put 5ml of oil in the air chamber. It feels smoother than my Rockshox 35 Gold.

    I ran Bolany before. Even I rode with it for more than 1 year without issues, I will not recommend it. There are lots of videos showing the fork break easily, particularly the steerer tube. SR Suntour is a trustworthy brand, I trust it more on lifetime than the Bolany even it's heavier. Also, Bolany on Amazon costs higher than on Aliexpress. On the latter, it costs around 60 USD.

    ive had 2 of these bologna forks and they are a great cheap upgrade but the magnesium lowers arent very strong on one of the forks I snapped off where the quick release skewer goes but that was after some jump trails and rocky downhill they're a great cheap upgrade for a light to intermediate rider

    This "Bolany" fork is produced in the city where I live and I don't trust it yet 😂 , in fact I can buy this fork online for 50-80$ (depends on what model you want) but I still believe Suntour Raidon/XCR or some old model from RST are way better options for a budget build.

    Seth, love your stuff, but I do have some criticisms of the test rig.
    Biggest issue I see is the fork is not being tested the way it is set up in the bike. The fork crown is not carrying the load from and impact the way it would be in the bike. The steerer is being allowed to absorb a lot of energy that would otherwise be run through the structure of the fork.

    Given how the fork is mounted in the stand vs how it's supposed to be mounted in a bike, I would be curious where the bending is occurring. Seems it should be mounted similar to how it would be in a bike with a set of bearings. I wouldn't expect the steer tube of the fork to be designed to take a perpendicular load like that.

    • @janeblogs324
      @janeblogs324 2 роки тому

      You can see it bananed the steerer in the middle.
      Yes it should be mounted on a bearing hard up on the crown race.
      The impact test is real world, hitting gutters/rocks or Seth's crazy roll in (the of version ) but casing the front tyre falling short of a jump is when they snap.
      If you watch the canecreek video he's copying or look up real snapped fork steerer's, the tube collapses right as the base of the steerer tube.

But I guess that these low-budget builds are for gravel rides around 30km/h. If you want to go extreme, definitely the hospital fee would be more expensive than any premium bike parts.

    I use to have one of those generic air forks, one thing is for sure, if it has the same compression switch same as yours then it is definitely a generic "rebranded" air fork which doesn't last long. You can check every generic fork in the market and you'll see that they all have the same compression switch and built. They just change the sticker brands 😅 But yeah they are good for kids bikes which doesn't get that much beating. Now I upgraded to Suntour XCR airfork which is quite known for durability and it works very well. Thanks for the good and honest review.

    Seth, I threw one of these Balogna forks on the wife's Diamondback Lux and it stayed for less than 2 miles around the neighborhood. During normal light braking to slow down for a 4 way stop, the fork lower and upper juddered uncontrollably. I did a full tear down and rebuild thinking it was maybe just a loose top cap or seal somewhere. Nope. Just terribly fitted seals. Returned and threw on a $200 Manitou Markhor. Completely day and night difference for the better.

Since I know this is a popular series, I think after the fork upgrade, you should put on a nice set of reasonably priced, wider rimmed wheels, something in the i30-35 range and maybe try fitting some 2.6" tyres in that thing, especially in the back,
