As a nurse I have had a philosophy for the past 22 years - don’t go to the hospital unless you can take care of yourself or you have someone there to advocate for you.

I was in a Rehab Hospital for 3 months back in 2021 due to both my legs being broken, so I had casts on both legs. When they asked what I did for work, I told them I was a Law Clerk for a Medical Malpractice Attorney. I had a great experience

I went in for a simple shoulder repair…but surgery was unsuccessful? I woke with my chest on fire, could barely breathe, or swallow-my throat/mouth was so BLOODY & swollen! It was 1-1/2 hr procedure, but I didn’t leave the hospital until 7-1/2hrs later! Was left in a tiny recovery room, as the surgery level closed around me. I COULD NOT GET ENOUGH AIR-because everything was STILL terribly Swollen. The surgeon said I was ok, even tho the surgery was a fail & left. I was afraid to leave because I couldn’t get enough air…was dizzy & weak. I couldn’t stand-collapsed, from lack of oxygen. Was LEFT alone for HOURS! My driver looked all over for help but the hospital wing was empty!? A nurse FINALLY brought a useless NEBULIZER?! Seriously? Dunno HOW they expected me to get some “mist” past the swelling, when SEVERAL HRS LATER -my Uvula was STILL so swollen it was blocking my airway…(which is NOT THE OXYGEN that I needed!). 71/2 HRS LATER - I finally got home. TRAUMATIZED! My chest/breasts/arm hurt sooo bad, was SHOCKED to see everything was completely BLACK & BRUISED! I am TERRIFIED about going back for a complete shoulder replacement. WEEKS LATER at post op dr visit, was told i had been intubated & “there were some problems “ but I would be ok in time. Then United Healthcare (Medicare/Medicaid as i’m disabled) dropped the hospital completely out of coverage, along with many of my drs - eye dr, dentist, Endocrinologist, & the physical Therapist (who said she was only putting me through 2 months of agony) trying to fix a failed surgery & all the residual damage that would not heal. Surgeon ignored her & ordered 3 more MONTHS of therapy!… THIS IS HORRIBLE leaving me w/a Useless/ agonizing Shoulder ripped up & DAMAGED WAY WORSE THAN BEFORE SURGERY!! Now no coverage for a repair? Wth is happening?

I lost faith in the medical system when I had my daughter last year. The hospital was horribly understaffed and no anesthesiologist available for four hours. I was begging to die. The nurses just rolled their eyes and told me to stop saying that. It turned out the midwife missed my baby was breech and that was why contractions were so bad and back to back. They were so awful and abusive I had to go to therapy afterwards

It’s been 🦵 a year since I broke my right hip and femur 🦴 bone. I have a titanium rod in my femur 🦴 now. My surgery went great!
I was treated worse than a wild animal! While I was in the first room after surgery one nurse was horrible!
This place is a trama hospital, in a large city! I’m gonna save y’all from the gorey details!
Two days later I was transferred to the Rehab unit.
One nurse and one doctor treated me like I was the only patient in the hospital! True caring human beings!
That first night in Rehab I fell asleep and woke up in pure agony 😮 I pushed the call button and asked for medication! A nurse came to my room and said, you were asleep and I didn’t want to wake you up. Since when does any hospital care if they wake you up !
She told me I would have to wait for a shift change for my pain medicine. I asked her how long would that be and she said around 8 or 9 am and it was 2am!
She looked straight into my eyes and said, I bet you want be ASLEEP next time, will you!
I’M SO SORRY THIS HAPPENED TO YOUR WIFE!
And please file a complaint to the head of that Dog Kennel❗️
I was suppose to be there two weeks. After 2 nights there and fear for my life, I called my husband and told him to come and GET ME ASAP‼️
This happened to me May 16 2023!

Malpractice laws need to be reformed as well,to hold hospitals and doctors responsible and not just when it is someone who can afford an attorney. Far too many people get horrific treatment and wind up not being able to sue,all because they did not have lost wages.

After being on the planet through eight different decades, I would never ever leave somebody I cared about in the hospital without me sitting right there watching everything they do. When my son was in the hospital they came in to administer his meds 5 minutes after another nurse had been there administering meds so I insisted on knowing what they were doing before they injected it into his IV. Come to find out the medication they were fixing to give him was for the little boy in the room next door. It probably would have killed my son. He had just had kidney surgery.

@@DianeSturlinXXOMG that is horrible. I was with my husband in the ICU almost all day for 7 days. The hospital staff was great. At my workplace, i had one client come in complaining to my co-workers that I couldn’t take care of her that week. A sweet 12 yo girl told me who it was. I dropped that client. Family comes first. I was grateful to sit with my sleeping husband, massaging his swollen toes, giving him sips of water, scratching his itches, and making sure he was treated well. My family is also in the medical field and things don’t always go smoothly. I’m glad you were able to be with your son😊

Diane…I live in the UK and was in hospital after a small operation, next morning and I was given a pot of medication by a nurse that I took.
Not long after I had the medication I started feeling very strange/high, ten minutes later the nurse who had left the meds next to me came back and asked me had I taken them I told her yes and she disappeared.
Apparently the medication was supposed to be given to the woman in the bed next to me who was an addict, she was a regular and would get herself admitted to hospital to get a fix. How can these nurses get away with that when I as a carer who administers medication to my people are held accountable for everything?

As a retired nurse I’m amazed at the decline in nursing care that is taking place. I went through major abdominal surgery this past December and was hospitalized for 8 days. I requested a bed bath every single day and didn’t get to have a shower until the 5th day. Which they left me on my own to do. Had to request ice water several times a day, asked to have my bed changed which was never done, asked to have the bedside commode emptied which was never done. By the time it was gotten around to the nurse had to bag it and throw it away. I asked for the nurse to call the doctor and request ibuprofen instead of OxyContin which wasnt relieving the pain. She refused saying it’s what the doctor ordered. One nurse even told me she wasn’t there to wait on me. I have never treated any of my patients as poorly as I was treated.

I'm not sure if all states are doing the welfare education incentive but in my state they are, for those on welfare there is maybe 2 options to choose from & the state pays for the schooling, so my point is Nursing use to be, a calling, meaning people wanted to care for & help people ect. today there are very few of those kinds of people in the field, it's just a Job with benefits..

I’m a nurse too. We can be real bee itches. I don’t treat my patients like that unless they treat me like a slave (which some do, thinking they’re the only patient in the hospital). That said, patients are in a dependent position with little control and frequently react negatively to this. Nurses need to get out of the biz if they don’t understand the power dynamic.

They’ve all been wonderful and have given me the care I have been there for and often more than that. I’m a nurse and was recently hospitalized for my 6th hip replacement. I was there for 4 days and not one time did anyone, doctor or nurse, put a stethoscope to my chest or abdomen for assessment purposes. Nobody even lifted my sheets/blankets to assess my skin or to assess for a DVT since I had been flat in bed for 3 days. The pitcher of water I received on admission was the same water 4 days later when I was discharged. I ran back through my head of my early nursing training when emphasis was placed good assessment skills and detecting subtle changes in respiratory status to bowel sounds or skin changes especially in a post-op patient or a patient who is confined to a bed. I was so saddened and was thrilled to go home. The system is so broken.

Sounds neglectful. In Ireland my son was admitted with an unknown issue where he lost the use of his arms and legs, was on oxygen. The er ignored him for a day and a half but once they eventually saw him they got cat scans, MRI, lumbar puncture and then to a ward on oxygen and steroids. His blood pressure and breathing was monitored hourly for two weeks. Water was fresh several times a day. Doctors and nurses visited at least once a day. He was there for six weeks then a month each in two different rehab centres which were excellent. Makes me appreciate our health system hearing stories like yours.

I laid on a stretcher in the hallway by the nurses station and other than taking my vital signs the nurses sat at the desk and chit chatted! They didn’t even offer me any ice packs for my face or my knee!! I finally asked for some. The medical care in this country is going to hell in a hand basket! No one cares any more. I feel bad for them, but at the same time, I wonder if the RN was actually playing on the phone or if he perceived/assumed she was playing? I am an RN in the Chicago area and I have worked in hospitals where we have iPhones to work (each RN). So if the computer is down we do not have to do paper charts we use the phone. The same goes for overriding meds. We are not allowed to do bc we can do it on the phone. Many of my colleagues prefer to do their charting on the phone. I once was accused by the daughter of a patient to be talking on my phone while I was talking to (ironically)her mother. Nonetheless, healthcare is a mess. I love taking care of patients, but nowadays 60% of the day you have to solve issues that are not even patient care issues. I went to school to be a nurse, not a magician. Now if that nurse was really playing games on the phone she should have been disciplined minimally.

She acted like she doesn't want to be a nurse, and they need to know that! You should also compliment the nurses aide, who was so helpful. And the other nurses who did their job well. Believe me, i put up quite an objection to being told i better leave. I was kicked out of his room with promises by staff that he would be completely taken care of. So, i sat in the car in the parking garage. When I returned to his room, he was kept awake through the night by the other roommate, throwing open the curtain asking for help multiple times. Most hospitals especially in the general areas have patient techs or assistants to help with shower/baths, activities of daily living. They can be super helpful or also be lazy. As a nurse, you can get overwhelmed with charting as well as other medical aspects of nursing. I do try to assist the techs with helping with bed care because it’s faster. It annoys me when people are glued to their phones. It’s not only the nurses and staff. I have tried to admit, assess patients and they’re on their phones, too. Sometimes, it takes a few instructions for them to stop. A few times, I’ve left a room and gave up. I assumed they’ll call me when they need me which they usually do but then I’ll be doing other things so now they have to wait. Some hospitals also have their charting system on a phone. One hospital that I work gives us an iPhone for charting and for contacts. Just like the regular population, there are the good and the bad. I’ve worked with crappy nurses that I questioned why they’re in this profession that needs a lot of empathy, patience. I’ve also been a patient and had wonderful and not so great experiences.

I don't think he will need to spend unnecessary money on a lawyer and as a retired nurse who also had bad hospital stays as a patient, I will give you some advice. Call the Nursing Director, tell her what occured during your stay, stay with the facts. Tell her to review the chart and speak with all the individuals you spoke to during your stay. If asked, what she can do, and she will ask, then state " I want you to waive the deductible." That should be all that you will need to do and if you paid anything, you want it reimbured. Remember, the incompetent nurse delayed pain medicatin and caused undue pain because she did not follow protocol in delivering a narcotic medication. Prayers for your wife and family.

It sounds like you were just the advocate that your wife needed. Good job!
Ten years ago our 84 year old dad had hip replacement surgery. After a few days in the hospital he was transferred to a rehab facility. The EMS drivers set him in a sitting position on the side of the bed. The nursing staff left him in that position for three hours before they came to lay him down. I couldn’t be with him every moment because I had to take care of mom at home who had dementia.
The next morning I went to visit and found out that he hadn’t been administered any pain meds since he had left the hospital the day before. I was dumbfounded and began to question the doctor who gave me some limp excuse. I phoned my brother who is a lawyer, and he was prepared to fly out and tend to matters. However, care improved after that.
Now both my parents are in assisted living at the cost of $9,600 per month. Facilities are happy to take your money, yet quality of care is poor.
PS. Our daughter had brain surgery for a Chiari malformation when she was sixteen. She has about an 8” scar down the back of her head/neck. Her hair grew back beautifully, and I expect your wife’s will as well.

You haven’t been to a hospital lately huh? I haven’t either, and I was super blessed in 2017 when I was to have great care. But the reality of understaffing, and constantly changing systems has destroyed healthcare in this country. Most dietary systems have gone to direct ordering be each patient vs meals coming at X time. And if the patient doesn’t order every meal, no food comes. It is absolute NUTS . I was very sick, I didn’t want to make decisions about food! Well the first three days I couldn’t have food, but once I started on food, I needed my full liquids so I could prove my re-sectioned bowel was working properly. It was frustrating. Here is another problem….hand held phone looking devices have become very involved in care, so it is possible that it could be mistaken. All that said, dietary should be able to follow proper meals for dietary limitations. What a mess of poor care in this story.
