Once again, I would like to suggest you reach out to Gaijin Goombah for future projects that delve into Japanese culture, history, and mythology. He's a bit of an authority here on UA-cam regarding all of that, and he can also help you get some things straight that you're a bit lost on. Maybe you could even try doing a collab with him at some point.
I really would like for you to do a messed up origin story on Damballa
Considering that Outworld is not only Earthrealm’s biggest opp, but that the emperor of Outworld is named Shao Kahn, I’m gonna guess that the Mongol history is why Fujin and Raiden are Earthrealm’s protectors.
Good call.
@@skyden24195 I always found it cool that he was named Kahn, and I felt there could be some legit reason to do so considering all of the other mythological inspirations. Granted, the Khans were very real, but due to their connection to Raiden, it’s part of the Japanese mythos. I’m glad I finally got to confirm my suspicions thanks to this video.
@@enochabraham688 there is also a very dangerous ruler in the Star Trek mythos named Kahn. Just thought I'd point it out, mostly because of the relevance of the name being associated with powerful rulers, rulers who are quite often depicted as, at least to some extent if not completely, malevolent in nature.
@@skyden24195 I think it was all inspired by the legend of the Mongol Khans. I remember him, and at least in his first iteration, he was really tan and had sleek black hair. The Khans may not have been holistically evil per se, but their sheer level of brutality may be unmatched. I mean, who else had the idea to use the dead bodies of their enemies as flaming projectile weapons??
@@enochabraham688 I'd have to agree about the "evil" associated aspect of the name being derived more from the opinions/perceptions of those who were conquered by the Mongols/Mongol Kahns. They were brutal, but at the same time they could be very diplomatic when it better served their purposes. After all, one doesn't control an empire as big as theirs by brute force alone. That would be impractical.
Yes! Please do some more of Japanese mythology. I'd also love to see some Yokai too!
Same. 😊
I only know yokai bc of the show lol
He's covered a few yokai so far. I also love it when he talks about Japanese deities, mostly because I was born in Japan.
"Blossoming thunder from her oyster ditch" omg this had me rollin! 😂💀
im gonna use that as an insult "shut up you oyster ditch" 😅
Fun(?) but slightly irrelevant fact: the storms that pushed the mongols back from Japan would be called the "Divine Wind," more commonly known as kamikaze.
Aye, Jon Solo, you're dope. Thanks for not being a tool.
Any time!
Love your videos great as always
I mean… he kinda is a tool… of knowledge. So a good tool
I've been waiting for him to cover this one! Can't wait for the one on Ashrah, One of my favorite MK characters.
For real
OMG "oyster ditch" is new to me--another reason to love this channel :)
Whats "oyster ditch"?
@@TheMesseng vajayjay
RAIDEN, STOP THAT BLADE!
Raiden is a daddy, also speaking of shinto myths, you could also do Fujin or some Pokemon who are based upon deities from Japanese myths.
lightning gods are some of the coolest and it’s cool that we’re getting into Japanese mythology cause I never see anyone talk about it
Yes! More Shinto and talk about Yokai, there’s so many ranging from obscure to just downright horrifying.
RULES OF NATURE
And they run when the sun comes up
With their lives on the line
Oh wait... Wrong Raiden
To be more specific, Kublai Khan was the emperor of Yuan Dynasty (Mongol ruled) China, the empire as a whole had already broken up.
I absolutely did not know the characters were based on real gods. That makes me enjoy the games and lore so much more. Love the channel as always, keep ‘er goin’ Jon
11:30 "You're gonna feel REALLY sorry for him."
Me: I already do!!!
0:09 yup. Can confirm you 100% sound like a mythology bro😂😂 spot on w that one lmao
Funny: Susanoo is the “storm” god, but evidently not thunder.
Absolutely love your channel it has taught me so much!!!
Japanese folklore has a lot of crazy stuff in it. Always happy to learn more about it
Jon may i suggest that you look into the mythology of the orochi next ? I’m sure you’ll find it similar to the legends of Hercules and Perseus in some aspects
When Raiden screams "Flying Thunder God", makes sense now since Raijin is...a flying thunder god
I love watching and listening to John talk about gods or history also hi John Solo 👋
Love your video, Jon Solo, and keep up the great work you are awesome
Its ironic that you uploaded this a day after i was looking up details about Raijin for an art piece i was doing.
I was also trying to see if there was a specific set number of taiko drums he is normally seen with. Couldnt find anything stating it.......then here YOU come.
As upset as i am for not finding it first......thanks for finding it period. I thought it was nine drums....but your added context makes it make sense why theres 8 instead.
I swear upon my life bro I love your amazing videos and content in folklore in so much more Greek mythology in Norris I truly respect you your content that life you live in doing these uploads and videos man I even follow you on Twitter to show love and respect brother that's how much I care for you and your videos
My favorite myth about Raiden is when he came down and fought for David Lo Pan against Jack Burton in the movie Big Trouble In Little China. Ok, so they never named him in there, but this did at the very least inspire the look of Raiden in Mortal Kombat, or at least has a common inspiration. I'm curious if there is some sort of lore in there.
I watched 'Taro the Dragon boy' a few times. There's the blue a d red demon and a lot more of japanese mythology like tengu, yuki onna, and the story of how Taro was raised by his grandma after his mother was turned into a dragon before Taro was born. He then sets out to find his mother and on the way learns about rice cultivation and teaches it to the poor people of japan and even has the vision about turning the mountain flanks into terrace fields.
I haven’t been on ur UA-cam in months but I always listen to your podcasts. Keep doing this Jon! 🎉🎉🎉 I really appreciate your channel. I’ve been watching for years! Thank you, for the detailed videoz
I was literally just researching Raijin the other day, very cool to see you did a video on him
Don't forget about big trouble in little china 😂
Also, this was very interesting and cool to watch h! Thank you for teaching us all about these things that nobody else would've!
"Oyster ditch" thats the best thing I've heard in a while
Been waiting for this
Enjoyed this video can’t wait for the Fujin video; he’s my favorite
You can't forget Enel from One Piece. I can definitely see the inspiration for his design.
Seeing you discuss more japanese mythology would be amazing, especially all the yokai legends i love those
Weirdly you'd think the Japanese would still make izanami hot even as a decaying corpse
Yesss, more Japanese mythology!!! Thank you!!!!
You've probably got this covered, but I'd love to see you cover the yokai.
Catch that thunder, how?
Ride the lightning. 😁
Raijin is one of the coolest, in all honestly.
The god i never thought about you considering doing but a video i NEEDED nonetheless love Mortal Kombat and your videos so much
Finally some Shinto religion deities. 😭😭😭😭🥰🥰🥰🥰 you are the greatest John Solo. Cannot wait for videos on Fujin, Izanami, Izanagi, Tsukuyomi, Susanoo (my favorite Shinto god) their sister Amaterasu...creatures like Shukaku, Nekomata, Ushi-oni and obviously you covered Kitsune.
You are awesome! thanks for covering the flying thunder God .
This is a great episode! Tbh though… I initially thought you were starting a mortal kombat series 😅 I was so excited lol
Great video
John u just know how to make the best joke skits in the middle of any video❤❤❤
Perfect timing with this since it rained with some features from thunder and lightning earlier today in my city
I was born in Japan. I get excited whenever you talk about Shinto dieties.
Thank God it was the first one
First I thought, Zeus. Then I thought, Thor? Nah my thoughts get crazier...HELLBOY!!!! I enjoyed this video so much 🤣👏👏👏
yeah i love that weekender bag. only drawback, the handle on mine started flaking within a use or two.
Love it!
I hope you'll eventually get to African mythology and folklore.
I do enjoy your Norwigen folklore videos.
A big thank you, Jon, as one of my favorite fellow human beings on the reality we live on and call home. For doing a video on one of my favorite demons, Gods/Kami or physical personification of a piece of nature placed with many fictional franchises for us to enjoy. Especially because of how much of the ancient pieces of history we have that are detailed upon him. Along with me giving his name to me, as a self-given nickname for myself, because of my volcanic thundering-like rage issues and my school past as a drummer. Along with me nicknaming one of my honorary American sisters Amaterasu or Izanagi, because of how much she as a slightly older angelic sister of mine is in caring for me and being one of the people in my life that I say try to make my days worth going through with my strength as I have my depression and temper issues. With that as a piece of me being a firm believer in the Japanese mythos along with the Norse and some others on our reality. Always I am thankful you do videos like these as a giant fan of yours, who uses your videos to help in my own research of our world’s past
Me and my friend would like to say “ THANK YOU JON SOLO!”😂you’re the best ❤️
Hope you do Korean mythology at some point!
Actually, a video about Japan’s indigenous population might be a fun idea as well. I know there is one ethnic group in the north of the country that is considered to be the original inhabitants. Other populations came from China and Korea, even though Japan has such a proud identity on its own. How all this compares to the early history of Shintoism would be fun to learn about.
Gotta say that the one with O-Chiyo is my fav as one of my fav idols is called Chiyo as well.
This video is so thunderous!
I'm at work on a monday fighting for my life and you just casually whip out oyster ditch 😂😂😂
I love learning about mythology from different cultures.
I think you're forgetting one really cool representation of him. Does anybody remember Big Trouble in Little China.
Seeing all the artwork from Smite, is so cool. I play that game because of my mythology hyperfixation.
Hi Jon Solo! If you're covering more Japanese mythology, can you talk about the tale of Kuni-Yuzuri from the Kojiki?
There should've been a record scratch effect when Sugaroo (I hoped I spelled that right) burst through that door in that story.
You said that she had given birth to eight Raijins from different parts of her body which represented a different kind of thunder, then you listed them as follows:
Great Thunder from her head,
Fire-Thunder from her breast,
Black-Thunder from her stomach,
Blossoming Thunder from her oyster ditch,
Earth Thunder from her right hand,
Rumbling Thunder from her left foot and
Couchant Thunder from her right foot.
This counts only 7.
'Big Trouble In Little China' is the best representation imo 😅
Thank you ❤
@@kimberlypatterson3171 ❤
Amongst the top five movies of all time
Raijin also appeared on the Japanese video game, Magician Lord. Which is about a young sorcerer, who fights demonic forces touches these crystals spheres. That turn him into these deities. You probably remember the video game. 🎮
You should do all the major mortal Kombat characters
Hey I’m early for once, hoping for more Japanese and Egyptian mythology :)
My favorite depiction of Raijin is from xxxHolic. We first get introduced to him when he gets stuck in a wall of a department store's appliance section. He's got the bad attitude and takes insult very easily, but is overall helpless to refuse any request by Yuuko and (in his last depiction in the series to date) stops Amewarashi from dispelling the rain so he can treat everyone who gathered at the Fox's Oden cart to a lightshow on his departure before they resume the Moon Viewing party.
I really would like for you to do a messed up origin story on Damballa
Ah yes, Sugar-ooh and Cannon, my favorite Shinto Kami 😂
HEY YEAH, please 🙏 do an Onryo messed up please
I don't know if this is accurate, but I once heard somewhere (I can't remember where) that the Mongols had a chief deity who was a thunder god named Tengri, whose anger was believed to manifest as thunderstorms. I've also heard the phrase, "Mongols fear only thunder," in reference to this, but again I can't say if any of what I've heard is accurate.
Oh wow! Ny favorite mortal combat character! Lol let’s gooo
I knew it all! Cause when i was playing Mortal Kombat I did play as Raiden :D
It’s looks like inspired Enel from ONE PICE too
Just clicked the notif! I saw the title and thought of Raiden Shogun from Genshin Impact XD
"Oyster ditch" LMAO
Hello John solo
Complete side note- you should look into an animated full-length film from the late 70’s, based on Ovid’s Metamorphoses. It can be found on UA-cam. Winds of Change/Metamorphoses, one of those films that have both titles associated to it. I’ve got a soft spot for it, it was one of those “things” that incite a passion to know more, the kick off of a love affair with mythologies in general. Could possibly make for a great comparison video 🤷🏻♀️
I'm blown away😂💯
Oyster ditch. Now that's a new one. This one was fantastic ! Raijin is one of my absolute favorite Gods.
Seth did what. Also great video!
Not, "oyster ditch." Lol!
Don't forget the two who hang around Seifer in Final Fantasy VIII and Kingdom Hearts II.
Did you say "oyster ditch"?? 😂😂😭😂😂😭😂😂😭
Yep No matter where you go… there is always a storm/sky god taking the protagonist role
Limp as a Bizkit!
why was the storm that stopped the mongols contributed to Raijin instead of Susano?
either way love the episode and love your work
You forgot: Perun is the Slavic god of thunder and lightning, and the highest god in the Slavic pantheon. He is also the god of the sky, storms, rain, law, war, fertility, and oak trees. Perun is similar to the Norse and Germanic gods Thor and Odin, and is often depicted as a strong, bearded man with a winged helmet, ax, and lightning-tipped arrows.
Hey Jon solo I really like your videos they are really cool I don't think you may know me but I used to be a student of your wife's class in 6th or 7th grade i don't really remember but it's sad that you guys moved but thanks for making these vids -Aziel
Thanks this Japanese one is a new angle for me
Do the messed up origins of Sun Wukong
Also Raijen also inspired the design of hantengu’s clone of hatred… zohakuten in the swordsmith village ark of Kimetsu no Yaiba.
There's also a reference to Raijin and his brother in the original Teen Titans cartoon with Lightning and Thunder
lets see when was the last time i thought of zeus i was like
"damn he's so baddass"
The idea a thunder god defib'ed a woman to bring her back to life is my head canon.
I was aware of the myth in 2008. I like the version of the two brothers portrayed in Inuyasha. 😂 The younger brother is obsessed with trying to get a full head of hair. He finds a potion recipe that calls for the skin of a young, beautiful woman.
