@Wendigo_2023 me and a friend were on a mountain trail that led to a clearing, and we were looking at what we thought originally was a black bear that was about 11 feet in front of us,then it stood up and I didn't know what I was looking at. It was only after I got back home that I looked up bipedal apes. I only knew at the time that what I saw wasn't a human,it was gray in color,it stood at 11 feet tall, and it had crimson red eyes. I decided to check into some Cherokee legends, and that was when I was 100% certain that I saw a Cherokee devil. To this day, I never said anything to anyone, and to this day, the red eyes are not only burned into my memory, but I still tremble when I think about that day. It takes a lot to get me scared, and that day, I was scared for my life. To this day, I still refuse to go back to that mountain.

And the concept of the chindi closely resembles real life paranormal activity. Wherever there's been some messed up stuff that happened in the location's history and the perpetrator spent a large amount of their life there if not died there, their evil energy lingers as a dark entity that's hostile towards anyone that spends too much time there. Amazingly, the rituals the Navajo would have done to try to expel a potential chindi were probably not unlike smudging and other cleansing rituals still done today to get rid of dark spirits.

Both can use soul-flight, but the ghost-witch's are similiar to the one of the Strigoi, sucking blood/vitality/nutrens from their victims.

The southern part of the state's national forest is home to some, as is Mounds State park in Indiana.. these wear blue cloaks and glowing eyes like wild cats/dogs but glow without the light reflecting. Though the best place to find em is in Mounds. (Around / outside of Anderson IN, and sadly due to people being stupid, Mounds is closed after dark.)

The Puckwudjie may have been tampered with by Christians, because the Anishinaabeg version aren't anywhere near as bad & the Baykok is only part of a fuller understanding. There's good stuff, too, so it's not all psychotic. But, at the end of the day, two of these are pretty much equivalents of demons in that culture.

its kinda funny how easily i can imagine why each story was created, humans really like our theatrics but the general well wishes of each myth kinda mirrors how today we might use cartoons and videogames to tell the same kinda values to kids. we spice up the stories to make em gripping, and you can learn from the stories for a good chunk of your life and still get new information from it. the way we do it has changed but were still using art to try to reassure kids and warn them of pitfalls.

Baykok is a lot more complicated than that. These are usually given as either people whose body was mishandled or mistreated or people who had committed such terrible crimes, the other souls kicked them out of the afterlife & they became trapped in this one. In some stories, they fly through the sky, raining blight. In others, they try to lure people from their villages at night, attempting to either assault them or desperately seeking forgiveness for whatever they have done. Only a shaman can exoricse a supposed Baykok by very specific burial rituals, taking extra care to show utmost respect for the body & extra steps to stop it from rising again.
Interestingly, the Wampanoag consider the Puckwudjies evil, but the Anishinaabeg actually consider them neutral, ergo they might not be all that bad. Either way, I think I hit on the existence of, maybe, five completely different races of Little People that Algonquians collectively believed in- ones of forests, waterways, swamps, caves & rocks. The forest type, I think, were the most beloved. Allegedly, those swamp lights literally are the souls the Puckwudjie have enslaved. I've heard from some other Algonquians that they are also considered a general good-behavior enforcement thing- they come after you for exhibiting wrong behavior to scare you straight, kind of like the Iroquois Dry Fingers.

Would it be possible for you to do some Messed Up Origins on superstitions? Like, where did they come from? How did so many people start to believe them?

JK Rowling used Pukwudgies in her stories about her school of witchcraft and wizardry in America. Not being from the US myself it was the first time I’d heard/read of them.
    Loved your video.
    Very informative.

I live in Ontario, pretty near the Algonquin park, and I have only ever had one really intense paranormal event happen ever, I went to Depot Harbour. Which is the site of a massive tragedy, essentially a whole bunch of metal(that’s was volatile as hell) ignited, and the result was the largest man made explosion until the Halifax Harbour incident.
Well the area is on a reservation itself, and since has been largely reclaimed by the forest itself, but some remnants remain there, long story short, I took my ex there to do a “spooky Halloween” photoshoot ( Idek why I was with her looking back she was so shallow)
Anyways we went out late late at night, and we were standing in the remains of a old building, when I heard something that just put my skins hair on end, it was like footsteps approaching from the wooded area. So, I told my ex to run back to my car and we started the car up and I drove, here’s where shit went a little insane, so this areas pretty normal to see a stray dog or even just a dog that is let roam.
Well when I’m screaming out of the area on a small dirt backroad (I can’t really explain it but I really felt like something was off and dangerously so)
A massive black dog charged out of the woods and started running at my car and barking.
This thing wasn’t a “dog” that I recognized if anything it looked bigger than a Great Dane. And it was pitch black, with almost yellow eyes. I almost crashed off the road to avoid it, but I’ve NEVER seen an animal act like that.. and hell I know dogs, to this day I’ve looked at as many breeds as I can to see if maybe I saw something, but no to this day not even a black malamute would
Match this thing in both size and stature.
Oh and my ex said (I’ll admit I didn’t see it) but she said people kept popping up as I drove standing on the edge of the wood line as we drove away.
To this day. I have no idea what it was, but that animal put more fear in me than a fully grown hippo charging ( I’m South African but live here now) and like that’s enough for me, someone very comfortable in the outdoors and woods to say. All I felt was terror when I saw that “dog”
It was like an accumulation of all the anxiety of the night so far in one glance.
Only afterwords did I find out you should not wear bright Colors to any form of graveyard/ disaster site, as my friend who is culturally Ojibway explained to me, she was wearing bright red lingerie and brightly coloured clothing as well..
Yeah I feel like I 100% got something mad by bringing her there. And frankly
After everything that happened with her, that would be fair enough lol.

Having your organs devoured by an undead creature with a vortex stomach is more scary than a modern infectious, brain munching zombie, heck the creature would even give the Vampiric Dracula a run for his money, I'd rather be munched on head on by a Werewolf than to find that I'd be suffering to death after having to discover one of my vital innards missing.
