That is true, but I'll still say DBZ is one of the few cases that make these "lore excuses" look much more ridiculous than similar excuses in other battle shonens. Because of DBZ's tremendous power levels, that were already impressive since the Saiyan arc. Like, if we skim over a variety of shonens it's not the majority that work on that scale... or that does it from the beginning and only get more op from that point. And there are a some ones who never reached that scale with many characters with earth shattering power. So in that sense DBZ ends up looking more ridiculous than the most. And it's funny especially when we realize that the own villains are also fighting on an extreme ki control.
I’ve always imagined it as the opposite actually, they can do all normal people stuff casually, but to do the superhuman stuff they sort of shift into kext gear, kinda like how us real life people need to actively engage our muscles to use our real strength reserves. Both in increments of intensity
I think as the characters change and train it becomes like walking to them. Hence why Frieza is able to walk around in his base form without wrecking his planet (something he couldn't do in Z)
This is 100% correct, no joke. Ki control is a fan copout, but the truth is, scaling and feats are just all over the place in the DB universe. If Ki Control actually has worked the way fans describe it, Goku and Vegeta wouldn't have felt a need to redirect Kamehameha and FF when fighting Cell, for instance. Or Vegeta wouldn't have said that he needed to hold back while blasting 18 with a Big Bang Attack just in case he won't destroy earth, and as a result he only destroyed a tiny portion of the mountain road instead...
@@turbotrup96 Yeah the root of the problem was the decision to make the power scale take that ridiculous leap in the passage from DB to DBZ. And things naturally only got worse from that point on since its a shonen battle series. Maybe Toriyama wasnt expecting to take the story for so long... And that really makes a difference, but doesnt totally excuse him since being pressured to make the story longer than planned was a possibility that should have been considered in his story planning. After all the series was already huge since DB, so extending the story by request had to be kinda expected. Also it could be argued that Toriyama had already planted the seed of the eventual power scale disaster by making Master Roshi able to effortlessly destroy the moon around early DB (kinda). But we could still say that exactly for that same reason, he could have been more mindful and tried to hold down the pace of the power scale growth along the story and especially from late DB to DBZ. At least that part was always in his control through the whole story... but no, he just went all out not caring about the consequences.

Goku redirecting his blast doesn't mean ki control isn't a thing all that means is that either even with it, aiming directly at the earth would cause too much damage or the level of power he was using was too much for him to control when aiming at the planet (that's not even getting into if he was even planning on aiming at the planet to begin with and was just using that as a feint to surprise Cell). Vegeta never redirected his FF. BB attack can be explained as him holding back because it was above his level of ki control.

Vegeta used BB in a straight line. Meanwhile, Majin Vegeta's self destruction didn't destroy Earth either, and you can't tell me he had a significant control over that explosion; he literally went all out on it. Fat Buu's Kamehameha exploding near the surface of Earth, destroyed only 1/10th of it, according to Babidi. And Buu is a villain who doesn't care about holding back. Same with many other villains. Just look at Super, there are way more examples of that there, especially in recent content. Enraged Gas (who was stronger than SSB Goku/Vegeta) DIRECTLY hit ground and caused a TINY amount of destruction. Same with Broly. Same with Merged Zamasus fighting Trunks.
Because he never trained to execute gentle actions before. And luckily for the canon DB world overall, these characters of galactic scale power like Vegeta were rarely put in similar situation that required precision and gentleness - and consequentially a more precise and methodical ki control. Yeah, DBZ made a ridiculous power level leap since the beginning in the Saiyan arc that sometimes we forget how crazy it was, because it's hard to even process how it happened.
That's because the moon is much smaller and closer to Earth in DB than the real moon because Toriyama either didn't know or didn't care, despite what Toriyama says in interviews. You literally see how tiny it is the few times we visit it in the series. King Piccolo is much stronger than Roshi but struggles with blowing up 2 cities and can defeat warriors stronger than Roshi despite this apparent "weakness".

We only ever see people destroy planets by striking the core with enough energy to cause it to self destruct. By the time we reach the Cell Saga, he claims he has enough ki to destroy the solar system. There's no reason to assume that means anything other than blowing up the sun. Listening to power scalers would have you believe that Vegeta could vaporize the planet with a huge Galick Gun and that Cell would destroy the entire radius of the solar system with an exploding kamehameha because they always use the biggest wank possible despite all logic

It was the "infancy" of shonen action mangas like we know and the storytelling standards werent properly set (and DB-DBZ actually contributed to shape them). So there was a kind of carefree vibe about certain story aspects. And that started to change over the late 90s, the age of One Piece, Naruto, Hunter x Hunter, etc.
