Great news. Now I can purchase the modx. I'm not a tech guys but I wanted some type of sequencer on it because I'm not familiar with using a computer and software to create. I'm going to subscribe because it seems like you know alot about the modx, which I will purchase soon. Thanks my friend!
The Montage definitely has it's own sound and personality. No other digital synth sounds like it. I think it's mainly due to the motion sequencer. I'm not hearing those radical, glitchy sounds anywhere else. I hope Yamaha won't be scared off of the concept of original synth design in the future. The world can live without another uninspired rompler workstation, but there are so few truly original digital instruments out there like the PPG and DX7.
Hi Dom, you were in-large-part my inspiration with your energy, knowledge and classy videos to purchase a new Montage 8 White. I updated to v3 and enjoyed your sound creations last week. Thank you for your work and Congratulations on that opportunity! 👍 This instrument is under “Yamaha Professional Music Production Tools” category & I was eagerly looking to use the 16 stereo USB audio channels in my music...More than the 8 outs on my XV-5080, more than the 6 on my Virus C and more than the 4 on my Kurzweil K2000 & Fantom X-6. However to my horror and disbelief, I found that the Steinberg-Yamaha USB driver doesn’t allow ANY other ASIO driver to co-exist in Cakewalk Sonar X2. I found on the net that this is the same behavior within other DAWs as well. This is a complete show-stopper for me. Without my RME babyface USB ASIO driver co-existing with the Steinberg driver in Sonar, the Montage will never show-up on my digital mixers faders to be included in song-making. What was Yamaha thinking with such an extreme restriction? This hardly makes for a “professional instrument.” At $4200 that I paid for it, I could almost buy 3 MODX 6s. This isn’t a Casio to use a USB cable and do some stupid rendering all day long like I were using ACID (back-in-the day) till the dinosaurs come back. The synth has to work in real-time with other pro-audio tools & be flexible like any other mature synth. The USB driver just sucks. Cubase owners have it “easier” in which a ‘reboot is not required after changing the ASIO driver from Steinberg’s to their own sound card’s Are they kidding? I left an email for steinberg as well as for Yamaha a few days ago for an explanation and some options/workaround. Sorry for the rant but it is with the intention that Yamaha will listen. I don’t post comments anywhere nor post any videos (anymore) but this issue completely ceased my making music.it is Anti-inspirational & makes me want to return the keyboard to the store & just get a MODX-6 with its measly 2 stereo analog outs. Their isn’t even an ADAT option on either Montage nor the MODX like the old Kurzweil K2661 had for 8 digital outs. was hoping to use the Montage on 2 albums being released worldwide this December that I produced. instead it’s sitting like an illuminati on a table in the corner of my studio -too elite to get-along with anybody else in the room... completely out of the game while the other synths are featured all over my tracks. So....how are you using the Montage for professional music production with a mixer (hardware I presume) in your studio? Rendering?
The ASIO spec itself allows only a single audio interface/driver to run at a given time. You can switch between ASIO interfaces, but two can’t run simultaneously in any DAW application.
Love love love love...PATTERN SEQUENCER!!!!!!!! Woke up to this news and it made for an excellent day...gotta wait til late October...I must be patient. One more thing that is cool: there is definitely a feeling unity amongst Montage/MODX owners about this update and, in particular, the pattern sequencer...we are rejoicing because our dreams have come true. Thank you Dom and Blake!
I hear ya Dom...but the Fantom has my blood pumping too. I have the MODX and I always knew the Montage is really where it is at for me in terms of all those physical buttons needed for quick editing and selection. The MODX is a gateway to the Montage monster!
Dom Sigalas when you’ve been around technology for 40 odd years like me, you learn your ideas are in step a lot of times :). Love my Montage 7 more than ever. Also have a X8 Fantom, and have owned a few Rolands and the Motif XF8. The industry is going amazing!.
Epic video.. !! have been away on holiday so I have only just updated both my keyboards, Modx8 and Montage 8 (but not in white!).... Plus you make it look so easy ! Love it!!
Kudos to Yamaha for listening re: the sequencer - it was always a baffling omission. Its arrival is single-handedly responsible for me not selling my MODX. Please tell me they're considering a MIDI editor for the next major update, though. Pattern sequencer is great but without a MIDI editor writing drum parts is a drag.
I like the MIDI USB To Device improvement. That's very contemporary. But are these all the enhancements and improvements of existing features? What about more flexible midi assignments? Or making scenes more flexible (okay, I always read about KbdCtrl and SuperKnob Link)? Or improving browsing for performances while playing the current performance?
Great update, I guess Yamaha got scared and decided to do something since the new Fantom is out now. This new Fantom has a TR style sequencer also, and X/Y pad built into the screen. I think Yamaha also implement this sequencer and X/Y on it's screen too like the AKAI MPC X does. That would be sweet because in the studio I have my montage connected to a touch screen monitor, it works nicely on a bigger screen, I can't wait to try the new Montage sequencer on the big touch screen.
That's the update i'v bin waiting for, and i'v understood that you can update also all the older Montage as well to this latest OS3.0? Especially i'v bin missing in Montage pattern sequence in sequencer, and analog modeling synthesis. But still one feature i'm missing in Montage, that you could use your own samples as a carrier in FM-synthesis, as you can do in Korg Kronos.👍😎🎶
Thanks for the excellent video. The only question in my mind is whether I should wait until Version 3.01 for Montage is released before I upgrade. I also have a Nord Stage and they have had many updates for bugfixing in their OS. But maybe Yamaha have done better job testing.
Looks like they still missed the rhythm styles with real time pattern variation controls for those of us who do a one/two man band. Are they expecting us to make aftermarket and custom OS modifications/ installations?
Time to start saving up some $$$ to buy that MODX 7 that I've been eyeing for several months now. an old friend runs a music store here (in Fairbanks) called Pro Music (www.promusicalaska.com/) and he's the licensed Yamaha dealer here. I was talking to him about getting a MODX last spring, to add to my Yamaha CS1x (purchased from that very story twenty years ago) to become the centerpiece of my home studio. I think I'll be talking to Craig some more and starting to make some concrete plans for what I'll need. Thank you, Dom! You have totally sold me on the MODX 7!
Dom, I have a question: with this new update, can I plug a midi controller into the USB port ok? Is it possible then to play with two keyboards? The MODX as main and one more MIDI controller playing simultaneously with different sounds in each? Thanks!
We have to thank ROLAND for launching the new Fantom, that has Sequencer and forced Yamaha to Reselase the software to unlock the sequencer on Montage (of course Montage always had a sequencer, as it is a hardware, but was hidden there). Hell yeah, but i'm still on to the Fanton instead (i own a Motif XF).
Great update. Pattern sequencer : yummy !!! "you can now use USB to device MIDI"... Does that mean I can finally connect my Seaboard without a computer to play the MODX sounds ????
Dom Sigalas, they need to come out with another update to allow you to navigate the montage or mocx without stopping your sequencer you may want to go through effects while the music is playing. I know the 1.xv would not let you do that, I don't not know about 3.0v
When I first saw this white montage, I was jealous. Have me wishing my montage was white now. Maybe yamaha can make a self adhesive white skin to stick onto the black model that can be removed when not wanted again. 😀 Just kidding. Also so glad the sequencer is back.
Well you actually can do that by buying parts so you can replace with the white metal just call Yamaha I didn't do it but I did replace the top control parts for my montage 8 and I replaced the whole entire keyed well yamaha did all that
As like Montage obtain DRUM Assign function which was only for MODX, do you know whether MODX would have DAW control feature which Montage already has? Wow nice ! Haha I realized that I stopped listening after you mentioned ' pattern sequencer' , like that was all I wanted to hear ;-) Yes, working together with DAW is excellent but it's also nice to be able to work straight from the board without 'limitations'. Does anyone know if this update will be installed already when buying the MODX somewhere in the near future ? My Motif XS has been serving me very well since some years, but soon I will try out MODX myself in a store to find out if it is a good upgrade in general (sound wise/workflow/interface etc.).
Hi! I never owned Motif, but I'm happy owner of MODX. And I want to say that this is "working horse" for arrangement making in studio. Yamaha made good product. Definitely, you should taste MODX in future.
In the new pattern sequencer, can you string together patterns the contain different performances ie., pattern one contains drums, bass, pad, and lead then pattern two contains completely different sounds that are different from the first pattern?
Dom, I have a major feature missing. I need MODX to obbey to the MIDI General Transpose command for my live performances. I purchased the instrument last November, hoping to replace my ageing Triton Extreme, but found myself stranded without this feature. Is it such difficult to fix this for the R&D folks???
Hi. I also tried to send master transpose via midi from korg pa4x to modx but didnt find a way to do it. It work fine with kronos and some tritons. I also read that it work with roland fantoms. Is Montage and Modx able to receive that midi massage at all?
I have an issue on yamaha montage 6...when I connect it to the mac...the mac's control was taken by the montage ....I tried a lot to recover it but can't.....can you tell me a solution?
Hi please someone could help me on a doubt for MODX Pattern? I don't have It still, and I will by soon but If someone has and updated to V2 on Pattern mode how we can change the scenes, by touch on this mode or is it possible link the scenes to 1-4/5-8 buttons on left side below? It has 8 scenes for patterns or 16 like mofx? Thank a lot for someboby answer me.
I was going to buy Fantom the bloody beast today but saw Motage update v3.0 little looking interesting. This has full sequencer like Fantom & Rhythm pattern?
I tried the Fantom next to a MODX7 yesterday... In my opinion the Fantom Is not very intuitive and the Modx sounds better. I'd recommend you to try it out before you buy it.
@@TheAlantheking117 no they added sequencer to montage and modx with the v3.0 firmware update..... But the Roland new fantom has easy sequencer not much step are there.
@@gautrstafr I tried man... The Roland fantom sounds are goood... Fantom just came roland will improve it slow like Yamaha did in montage and modx Fantom has RD2000 weighted hammer keys.. Simple and easy sequencer and plus you can add exterme syth to it and plus split. Daw Support and Mainstage. Plus hassle free plug & play connectivity with daw and mainstage.. I saw online with montage to connect to cubase or other daw lot of work one has to do.... Lot more I liked in the Fantom...... But still I am going for a try. If I don't like Fantom in 60 days I will return it simple
@@thomascook2535 I meant that montage and fantom are not the same product. Fantom is a Real workstation with all its includes whereas the montage is "just" a synth with a sequencer (basic in my opinion). The goal of the fantom is mainly to replace a DAW in a studio or a live context. The goal of the montage sequencer's is mainly to write down ideas. Yamaha only add a sequencer because of the community complains 's
Good news for all Montage & MODX owners - great to see Yamaha supporting current owners with comprehensive updates!
You made my day Dom and Yamaha. With the pattern seq I feel as if my beloved Motif XF is back home ...
Finally, finally, the pattern mode is back..... 👍😎
Pattern seeqencer a great move from Yamaha. So many guys waited for it and finally they got it. Yamaha knew their heart..thanks Yamaha..

Hello Dom I am updating My Montage 8 to V3.0 but the color did not change to white any way around this? what am I doing wrong?
lol 👍👍 😁
:D
Nah, you need to hold down the key while booting. If that doesn't work you probably don't have white privileges. Always check your privileges.
Yotam Cohen hahahahahahahaha, do they sell the color at home depot?
Yamaha saw your post and just released a fix in the form of a Halfords voucher for white spray paint. UK only I'm afraid.

Nice update (especially the extended LFO which was really needed) but I was really hoping for Cubase control for the MODX.
Honestly, expected sequencer similar to Korg Kronos. But pattern sequencer is good also. Thank you for this short video!
Amazing coverage Dom, so talented and incredible playing.

Yamaha just made a lot of people happy. Having a shiny new Roland Fantom breathing down their collective necks didn't hurt either, right? :D
Tony Carpenter the update was in the works for months now, the Fantom was released a couple of weeks ago :) not related if you ask me ;)
I played a Fantom this weekend. From what I saw, I don’t think Yamaha have much to worry about.

Hi don, can the usb to device port now SEND midi too? Eg. If I connected an iphone to it with a usb cable could I control an iOS synth app?
Do I get this update if I put 3.5 update into the montage or do I need to do them separate?

Can the sequencer be put in as a step sequencer by any chance?
I would love for the new filter to be per voice like any other filter rather than it being an effect.

Could they add ability to use 16 Channels from the keyboard itself please
