Back in the 90s when "cool kids" didn't care about their health, taking up smoking was a terrible but easy way to make friends because at some point someone will ask to borrow a lighter or for a cigarette while outside. As adults, this unhealthy habit can still lead to friendships at new jobs. But how to make friends as a person with clean lungs? Idk. Get a job at a convenience store or something and eventually you'll get to know "the regulars" and some will become friends? (Was unintentional but worked out that way for me in a small town.) Another time a guy started chatting with me when he noticed my band shirt; 4 years later he's since become one of my best friends. I'm not sure if any of that is useful, particularly since some of it is admittedly bad advice (but any smokers out there can attest it *is* an easy icebreaker. Still, do not take up a habit that is extremely hard to quit. I said I'd quit after 6 months. Its been over 20 years and I'm still a slave to addiction.)

Remember kids, that villagers you're good friends with aren't less likely to get a thought bubble, they're less likely to ask to move out. Sometimes a thought bubble is a new nickname for you!

You can also ‘investigate’ the lost item, and you can get an extra point if you give it to the correct person without showing it to another villager. If it says ‘someone lost this...’ then it’s from a villager that you have less friendship points with.
Another method is to save after picking up the item, talking to a villager and ask who owns it, hard reset the game and then give it to the villager (make sure the game doesnt autosave after finding out the owner)
That interaction with Dom at 2:50 happened so quick that i was only able to read "I think these scaredy fish are just afraid of my huge, bulging-" and now i fear to know what kinda schmeat Dom is packing and what he plans to do with those fish :(

While time traveling I noticed that usually the villagers with highest friendship are more likely to ask you to move out, the ones that just moved in can’t move out, and the one with low friendship (friendship level 1) are less likely to ask you to move out.
Y’know that engagement-esc ring that sometimes shows up in Nook’s Cranny? I bought one of those today for about 69,000 bells five for take, wrapped it up, and gave it to Beau. I was really curious if there would be any special dialogue for presenting a villager with an engagement ring. Well, turn out nothing new happened. I just wasted 69,000 bells for Beau to reject me. But at least he displayed it I guess ;-;
Marina is a new villager of mine and she’s now my favorite, and we’re becoming good friends. So I feel horrible about missing her birthday which was two days ago. I was busy with work. It’s interesting that I find myself caring that much about video game animal people.

A fun little method of gaining friendship I've tried and would like to share is gifting villagers present-wrapped stacks of non-native fruit. The combined sell total of the the fruit plus the present wrapping should net you the max daily friendship value gain on each encounter. The reason I mention fruit is not only for easy accessibility for simply growing fruit without spending money, but also because villagers tend to change up the interior of their homes with whichever gifts you give them. (Unless you gift them clothes or something) Some people might be content with what their homes look and fruit is something they're not going to change their interior over. The only drawbacks are that not everyone might have an orchard on their island and fruit takes some time grow. If you don't care what their homes look like, even better. All the more reason to go nuts with whatever you'd like to gift lol. Thank you for the helpful video. It's cleared up some questions I've had in regards to friendship.
This has been informative as I have noticed some of my villagers giving me nicknames and asking to buy their items and whatnot. Glad to see what effect I have had on my villagers, especially Reneigh :)
When a villager I don’t like asks me to send a gift to a villager I do like I don’t do it. Instead I open the gift, and don’t deliver it. The next day I wrap the gift, and gift it to the villager I was supposed to send it to. For example, Rocco wants me to send a gift to Midge, I like Midge, but I don’t want to increase my friendship with Rocco. So I open the gift, and don’t deliver it. The next day I wrap the item, and give it to Midge, gaining friendship with her, but not Rocco
Haha, I had Rocco and hated his mean temper so when He asked to move I was happy to send him off, BUt, I also felt bad because he second-guessed himself saying things like, " I don't know where to go now, I should have not asked, I do hope if you ever see me again, you'll say hi. Then he walked around sad all day and Villagers asking about the move.".. Seriously, I felt like crap for a few days. I've only let two other go...but I was ready for the self-pettiness.
It's important to notice that low friendship levels do not guarantee that villagers will ask for leaving the island. At best, it slightly increases the chances of him doing so but it is not certain that he will eventually do that.
I'm so happy now that I've seen this. I have all of my Villagers photos and I have them all on my wall. I have also learned not to carry around too much in my inventory, it seems they always want the good stuff...Lol' We are one happy family ! Gotta love the trade deal tho, you never know what you get until you agree to trade.
BTW: reducing friendship can be beneficial if you want to get rid of a villager after obtaining their framed photo. I did that several times now in order to make them more likely to get a thought bubble.

You can report Sherb to Isabelle just press report a villager and then press Sherb and press how he talks and it will return to the original catchphrase.
Please help me out here! I've seen conflicting info. Will I always get my villager's framed photo eventually once I've maxed out friendship points or not? I've been playing over 2 months. One of my original 2 villagers that started on my island gave me his photo about a month ago, as did my 5th villager. None of the others have. I do everything you've listed. I gift based on favorite colors, styles & interests & give expensive gifts when available. I was even running around mailing wrapped gifts to each resident every day. (Kudos for pointing out that's pointless.). Every resident but one has gotten to the point where they'll buy items from me, which is supposed to be the highest level, yet I haven't gotten their photos. I know it's supposed to be relaxing, but it's driving me nuts wondering why I'm not besties with everyone! 😫
I doubt this is completely true, I mean the friendship part yes but not the kick out part, Audie has given me her framed photo yet she asked me to leave the island while I have 2-3 that are new so I haven’t had that many interactions with them. Maybe friendship still doesn’t have anything to do with the kicking out part and it’s random, I’ve also heard that it does affect but the other way around so when you become best friends with everyone they will want to leave so you rotate villagers...
9:48 I have noticed that if you send a gift through the post even on the first day a villager is there, the next day you will be able to give gifts daily. So idk if it gives points but it's a good trick to know.
One good item to give them is the iron wall lamp. It only takes 4 iron and 2 clay to make and they will always give you a gift in return. They also never display it in their homes.

My villagers get thought bubbles all the time but it's always asking me about secret handshakes or nicknames or their catchphrases or if they want me to buy something or they wanna give me something. Thought bubbles seem to mean nothing.
At the very beginning of the game I encountered Zucker on my 2nd ticket and Lolly on my 5th not even knowing how the villager kicking out and plot thing worked so now I'm trying to make sure they stay forever bc they're both sooo sweet :)
Also depending on what personality the villager has they’ll show you a reaction depending on the personality and it can only be unlocked if you’re best friends with them

I don't know if anyone needs it but I've recently found out that normal type villagers will give you their photo after you give them a giant clam (idk at which friendship level). Do whatever you want with this information.
Did you know it’s possible to get a framed photo twice? Yes it is! I got Julian’s, Cherry’s and Aurora’s framed photos in almost the same day, what I did are, I send mail, talk to them (not more than 15x), give them gifts EVERYDAY. And do what they’re asking (lost items, catch a bug/fish). Mostly it’s patience and perseverance, you guys can do it!

(Unless you gift them clothes or something) Some people might be content with what their homes look and fruit is something they're not going to change their interior over. The only drawbacks are that not everyone might have an orchard on their island and fruit takes some time grow. If you don't care what their homes look like, even better. All the more reason to go nuts with whatever you'd like to gift lol.

When a villager I don’t like asks me to send a gift to a villager I do like I don’t do it. Instead I open the gift, and don’t deliver it. The next day I wrap the gift, and gift it to the villager I was supposed to send it to. For example, Rocco wants me to send a gift to Midge, I like Midge, but I don’t want to increase my friendship with Rocco. So I open the gift, and don’t deliver it. The next day I wrap the item, and give it to Midge, gaining friendship with her, but not Rocco

Haha, I had Rocco and hated his mean temper so when He asked to move I was happy to send him off, BUt, I also felt bad because he second-guessed himself saying things like, " I don't know where to go now, I should have not asked, I do hope if you ever see me again, you'll say hi. Then he walked around sad all day and Villagers asking about the move.".. Seriously, I felt like crap for a few days. I've only let two other go...but I was ready for the self-pettiness.

It's important to notice that low friendship levels do not guarantee that villagers will ask for leaving the island. At best, it slightly increases the chances of him doing so but it is not certain that he will eventually do that.

I'm so happy now that I've seen this. I have all of my Villagers photos and I have them all on my wall. I have also learned not to carry around too much in my inventory, it seems they always want the good stuff...Lol' We are one happy family ! Gotta love the trade deal tho, you never know what you get until you agree to trade.
BTW: reducing friendship can be beneficial if you want to get rid of a villager after obtaining their framed photo. I did that several times now in order to make them more likely to get a thought bubble.

You can report Sherb to Isabelle just press report a villager and then press Sherb and press how he talks and it will return to the original catchphrase.

Please help me out here! I've seen conflicting info. Will I always get my villager's framed photo eventually once I've maxed out friendship points or not? I've been playing over 2 months. One of my original 2 villagers that started on my island gave me his photo about a month ago, as did my 5th villager. None of the others have. I do everything you've listed. I gift based on favorite colors, styles & interests & give expensive gifts when available. I was even running around mailing wrapped gifts to each resident every day. (Kudos for pointing out that's pointless.). Every resident but one has gotten to the point where they'll buy items from me, which is supposed to be the highest level, yet I haven't gotten their photos. I know it's supposed to be relaxing, but it's driving me nuts wondering why I'm not besties with everyone! 😫

So far I have 9 villager photos. I wish I knew about the photos earlier, because I’ve had a couple villagers move without getting their picture.
I doubt this is completely true, I mean the friendship part yes but not the kick out part, Audie has given me her framed photo yet she asked me to leave the island while I have 2-3 that are new so I haven’t had that many interactions with them. Maybe friendship still doesn’t have anything to do with the kicking out part and it’s random, I’ve also heard that it does affect but the other way around so when you become best friends with everyone they will want to leave so you rotate villagers...

9:48 I have noticed that if you send a gift through the post even on the first day a villager is there, the next day you will be able to give gifts daily. So idk if it gives points but it's a good trick to know.

One good item to give them is the iron wall lamp. It only takes 4 iron and 2 clay to make and they will always give you a gift in return. They also never display it in their homes.

I got Snake as one of my very first villagers. I was upset at first because I didn’t want a Jock type! But after a while I grew.. obsessed. He is my all time favorite villager now and today he gave me his photo!! I can’t believe I hated him at first, he is so sweet- I can’t- 💕✨🥺

My villagers get thought bubbles all the time but it's always asking me about secret handshakes or nicknames or their catchphrases or if they want me to buy something or they wanna give me something. Thought bubbles seem to mean nothing.
At the very beginning of the game I encountered Zucker on my 2nd ticket and Lolly on my 5th not even knowing how the villager kicking out and plot thing worked so now I'm trying to make sure they stay forever bc they're both sooo sweet :)
Also depending on what personality the villager has they’ll show you a reaction depending on the personality and it can only be unlocked if you’re best friends with them
Ok, so if I talk to Isabelle about a villager and the way they talk, that just changes their dialogue? Does it reset your friendship level? I didn't think to do this....and I'm pretty upset that Fauna doesn't say, dearie anymore because she picked up zoinks from Chops. :(
it keeps your friendship but reverts their dialogue to the original settings
so i have had rudy since the start of the game...one time he came up to me and asked me if he could buy a butterfly....that is lvl 6 friendship right?? so after that till this day i have been giving him gifts but he still hasnt given me his photo....if im doing something wrong can someone help me??

My starters where Buck and Hazel and I was like, “ their kinda ugly” but I’ve come to love them so quickly. I noticed buck looking at himself in my mirror so I gifted him his own, they both have resort homes in the new dlc, and I never pass up a moment to chat with them, I love them so much 😅✨

There's no way to track it. You just have to pay attention to their words and actions.

I don't know if anyone needs it but I've recently found out that normal type villagers will give you their photo after you give them a giant clam (idk at which friendship level). Do whatever you want with this information.

Did you know it’s possible to get a framed photo twice? Yes it is! I got Julian’s, Cherry’s and Aurora’s framed photos in almost the same day, what I did are, I send mail, talk to them (not more than 15x), give them gifts EVERYDAY. And do what they’re asking (lost items, catch a bug/fish). Mostly it’s patience and perseverance, you guys can do it!

Mac is the only villager that has given me his photo. I give him gifts, play games with him, and interact with him very positively every day. But today, he said he wanted to move out. So, having max friendship doesn't necessary mean they won't want to leave.
