Great! Everyone talks like it’s a dead end if you have a Shimano free hub and want to switch to the SRAM, so I presumed it was far more intensive than this. You made it look easy. Well done.

This is the first video i've seen of yours. You give directions like you know me! Simple, complete, point-by-point with enough background of the other stuff to give substance. Nice job!
This video is so real - and clearly shows the what needs to be done. Thank you. I have a Commencal 2020 which came with NX derailleur, but GX crank. Upon arrival I opened the box and I replaced the rear derailleur, shifter and chain with GX group, I only kept the cassette (because my rear hub was a Shimano with the old freebody...) . So, if I correctly understand your video, I can easily (like you show) switch out the Shimano HG hub and replace it with SRAM's newer XD driver (since GX cassettes require SRAMs newer XD driver) and then put on the GX cassette. WOW!!! I've been OK with it these last 2 years, but will do as you did and (when my cassette needs replaced) put on a GX Cassette!!! Thank you so much.
You do need to verify that your hub has an xD freehub option. If it's a Shimano hub that is unlikely. Not all freehubs fit all hubs since the internals are different between brands.
Hi Shad. Quick tip - never load against the moving side of your multi wrench. That's the weakest point and can break. Turn your wrench over and load against the fixed side. Or better yet, use a socket bar on your hub tool.
I do know this. Buy generally when I am not thinking I need to put so much torque on it I don't worry about it too much. This has been called out already.
Wrong, the wrench was used correctly in the video. The adjustable part of the wrench shall be positioned so the flank on the hex add force to the lowest part, towards the base, in order to add lowest possible torque on the adjustable part.
I just ordered an aluminum Wolf Tooth 32 T chainring for the NX cranks. That should lighten them up some. Not sure how many more updates I will do. This bike will be my steed for 21. I generally get about 2 years out of my mountain bikes before I get a new one.

Good video. Thinking of doing this on my 2021 Stumpjumper as the NX is crap. So is it mainly you just have to get a XD driver with the same amount of Pawls as your existing one? Is that the main takeaway?
No, you need a driver that is compatible with the brand and model hub you have. Generally they are made by the same manufacturer as the hub you have and not all hubs have XD Drivers available.
As long as the derailleur is the same speed you don't need to change it. In my case I have an Eagle Cassette and Eagle derailleur (Eagle is 12 Speed). So they are completely interchangeable. So an Eagle NX derailleur will work with an Eagle GX derailleur.
Thank you very much very helpfull..just a question...did you have an NX 11 50 and you chnged for the GX 10 52? Is this fit with the NX derailer? Thanks a lot.
The GX Derailuer is much better quality/smoother shifting than the NX so a great upgrade , then you can use the GX 10-52 ! No you can’t use a 10-52 GX cassette with the NX derailleur !
Dude! I don't need to. I have pulled wheels off long before derailleur locks existed. It's pretty easy to take the wheel out and put it on without the derailleur lock. So I pretty much forget they exist.
Lol, yes. This was called out before. I have never had an issue using it backwards. Yes, if I was to add a cheater bar for more leverage or something I would make sure the pressure was on the solid side. But for this kind of stuff, it doesn't really matter.
Yes, the matching chain for a narrow wide chain ring will only fit on a certain way. Your chain has inner and outer links in which the space inside the inner links is narrower than the outer links. The teeth on the chainring are correspondingly narrow then wide to match this. If the chain is put on the chainring with the links matching the teeth incorrectly, the chain will not slot slot down fully onto the teeth. In that case move the chain or chainring by one tooth/ link and the chain will fully slot into the chainring teeth.
You should be able to upgrade the Derailleur to GX. From my understanding, all SRAM Eagle stuff is interchangeable. The issue I show here is that a GX cassette won't work on an HG cassette body, GX cassettes require SRAMs newer XD driver. NX and SX cassettes still work on the older HG (which is the older Shimano) driver.
Yes you can. I actually called SRAM and they told me to "do it". :) My Commencal 2020 arrived with NX and I immediately replaced the rear derailleur, shifter and chain with GX group, I only kept the cassette (cause my rear hub was a Shimano with the old freebody...).

I don’t think any amount of downward pressure will cause the teeth marks in your freehub body (twerking or torquing). That is caused by rotational pressure, like from pedaling. This is usually caused by the cassette being installed with too low a torque, but clearly this wasn’t the problem on your bike (unless someone tightened it up unbeknownst to you after you purchased it). Hi! Is the connection between old Shimano HG and new XD are the same for all wheel sets? My bike will come with an sx cassette and i want to change it, do i just have to buy an XD drive and it will be plug and play? The rims will be DT Swiss M1900
I assume by connection you mean will they all work with the internals of the hub, meaning the pawls will line up and so on. Not all hubs have the option to change to XD drivers. For the ones that do, the driver has to be specific for that brand and model of hub because each hub on the market has unique internals. This XD driver in the video will only work on the IBIS hub I ordered it for. You will need to see if there is an XD driver available for the DT Swiss M1900 wheels which probably has it's own unique hub since it is their more budget friendly wheelset and not likely their normal hubs.

@@ShadLife thanks for responding.I believe there is an xd feehub for the Giant performance tracker hub. Wil it work with 52 tooth cassette? Does boost matter? The free hubs are hard to find tho and if in stock priced around 100 bucks canadian. I'd honestly like to X01 my Fathom and if I cant I'd like xt as a sub.
@@terrycorkum For a 52 tooth I believe the only thing different would be a longer chain. I am not 100 percent sure so I would definitely check on that, but I think that's all that would be required.
Did you mean GX uses XD driver? You said NX uses XD..
Yeah, right at the beginning. I do correct it later on.

You need to work more on tools and how to use it .
I have a makeshift setup right now until my new house gets built. So I have to work with what I have. Ideally I would have a vice and study bench for this stuff.
Using a tiny adjustable crescent spanner?? Come on man use some proper tools, not hard to see the leverage you're not getting.
Yep, that's what I used. A bigger wrench and a cheater bar. I didn't expect it to be on that tight because they don't need to be that tight.
