Definition of a real man on the court: silent, humble, tough (arguably tougher than even Nash, who had him as an inspiration), humorous and ready for anything.
I was there. It was cool. When hot rod announced Stockton at the start he jogged out and that one song Simply the Best.. was playing. We were all roaring and crying.
Man I wish Stockton could have won a championship he really deserved it he was an all time great player, a great man, and an even greater man for staying loyal to his team for so many years. A HUMBLE, RESPECTED, GREAT.
Barkley, Malone, Ewing, Wilkins, Gervin, Webber, Nash...the list is pretty long. A lot of things have to go right to win a championship. In fact a Ewing, Malone, Barkley, Gervin, Stockton team would make a pretty good match up against any other 5 you could muster.
I was at the retirement ceremony in the Delta Center with my best friend Matt. I remember it like it was yesterday. After all seats filled...they turned off the lights and Hot Rod called out, "Now for the last time ever, point guard out of Gonzaga, #12 John Stockkkkkkkkkkkkton. And then everybody stood up....and they played "Simply the best." I cried like a sissy, but never turned to look at Matt, neither did he. About 4 hours later he asked me if I cried....I said yeah....he's all, "Me too!"
Watching this makes me wanna shed a tear or 2. Stockton, you are just unbelievably amazing. All time Assist Leader by a large margin, as well as All time Steals Leader... I probably will cry if either of those benchmarks are ever broken because you deserve to be remembered forever as the best PG in NBA history, because simply put you are the best PG in NBA history. Utah loves you Stockton, now and forever! PS: RIP Larry H. Miller, and I miss you as well Hot Rod!
I loved watching John Stockton play, he truly played the point guard position the way it should be played. A lot of people compare Nash to him, and there are a few similarities, but the one similarity that sticks out to me is the way they carry themselves. John Stockton was very honest, very humble, and never sugarcoated anything. He never gloated when they won and never pointed fingers when they lost. Kobe Bryant could take a lesson from him.
such a shame how very few people talk about Stockton. I know the reason is mostly because he never won a championship. Sad how a lot of people use that as a huge measuring stick to determine the greatness of a player. Regardless of not having any championships, this guy still holds the record for most assists with 15,806 (10.5 APG).
Man he was exciting to watch. My four favorite players of all time Stockton, Malone, Hornacek, ane Jordan. Ironicall the latter tormented the first three.
I remember playing basketball at recess in grade school. We had a rule for when you could call out, "I get to be John Stockton!" Whoever was second was stuck being Jeff Hornacek, or worse, Howard Eisley.
So if u look at PERSONAL records...John Stockton is the best player in the history of the NBA, I mean it's not even close ....he holds multiple records, but there r 5 major stats...Stockton has 2 of them steals and assists...that's unreal...also Jordan should have been 4/6.... The 2 years in the finals, Jazz were the better team....if u go look at the games, it's obvious that the refs gave the title to the Bulls, this is not some crazy conspiracy theory, it's basically known at this point..,The NBA, was making more money off of Jordan being a Dynasty then any sport in the history of sports, THEY STILL ARE MAKING A FORTUNE FROM JORDAN....so when u watch the games close, if it's a blowout, the refs can't do anything, but if it's close, and the Bulls were a great team, just not as good as Jazz, u see the calls where they handed it to them, it just takes a few calls here on there, when it's going to be a game decided with less than 10 points...I saw the games, live in both Utah, and flew to Chicago, even in the Chicago paper, they said thanks to the refs...there was a buzzer beater that when u review, was not even close, given to Bulls, the SAME GAME, a buzzer beater from Jazz was good, and was waved off..,that's a 6 point swing, and Jazz lost by 5... Jordan famously pushed off Byron Russel, to win...when u understand how the league makes money, and that Jordan winning, would and still makes the BILLIONS...u understand..also if u watch the games, it's broken down where they cheated them, ALSO several NBA refs, have come forward, AND TOLD how they were told and taught to cheat for teams...it's a fact...Their individual numbers r not even close, Stockton vs Jordan...not even near the same level....
The Greatest pure point Guard of all time! And Hot Rod the greatest play by play announcer of all time. Us Utah Jazz Fans were lucky to watch these guys for many years and Karl Malone the Greatest "Power" Forward of all time. Just wish they could have won the 1997 or 1998 NBA CHAMPIONSHIP. The only thing missing. STOCKTON ALL TIME LEADER in ASSISTS & STEALS And Karl Malone 2nd in ALL TIME POINTS as Hot Rod said it best, "STOCKTON2MALONE!" "AND YOU GOTTA LOVE IT BABY!"
If he could have at least won just one championship he could have further cemented his stature as the GOAT in the point guard position. Same is true with Karl Malone, if he had just one ring then he would have been the greatest PF position to the eyes of many. - A Magic Johnson fan growing up.
I have been a Jazz fan since their beginning in New Orleans. As a young child, I would scream until my lungs burst. During that magical time, Pistol Pete Maravich was the featured player. They were not very good with regards to their record, but Pete and Truck Robinson put on a show. John Stockton is definitely a different player than Pete, but both were winners.
Does anyone know if Stockton turned Mormon? I've always been curious about what it would be like to play for the Jazz. Smaller Market, unlike any in the League, because I'm pretty sure it's 90% Mormon. Just curious. Thank you.
It's about 50/50 in Salt Lake City as far as the Mormon thing goes now. Of that 50%, I'm guessing about 50% actually practice faithfully vs. are Mormon in name only...and probably less than that. Same thing with just about every other religion. My point is, it's a more diverse city than you might think. I lived there for a long time, my wife was born and raised there, I still have family there, and I visit there several times a year. I have many friends that live there and are "Mormon". I know the town, and the people, very well. I actually like the Mormons. They are good people for the most part as long as they are not judgemental. I don't like the fact that their laws reflect their beliefs. I don't like their liquor laws, for example, which infringe on the rest of us. If you don't want to drink, then don't drink...but don't push your religious beliefs on us via the political realm.
How would you know? You live in Utah? You go to all the games? Go read the survey's taken by NBA coaches and NBS referees and players .. Utah is brutal to play at when your not the Jazz. The Kings have never been good, by the way.
I love how Stockton is so soft spoken, but was tough as nails when he played.
Definition of a real man on the court: silent, humble, tough (arguably tougher than even Nash, who had him as an inspiration), humorous and ready for anything.
He will always be my most favorite athlete EVER. Yes, in all of sports. John Stockton will always be that guy. :) Forever a fan. Utah Jazz forever.
Stockton needs more credit good shooter, unselfish, great pass passer and solid underrated defense. My favorite PG of all time

Clean, classy, stand-up athlete/guy! Love John Stockton! :)
Stockton was just awesome!

john could make a blind guy score 10 points
Just about!
In true Stockton fashion, dishing out a bunch of (verbal) assists! Even during his own retirement ceremony speech!
LIVING LEGEND!LOVE HIM...
THE BEST PLAYMAKER-POINT GUARD OF ALL TIME!(EVEN BETTER THAN MAGIC,IN MY OPINION)
I feel sad that him and Malone and the rest of the 96-finals Jazz didn't win the championship, they would have truly deserved that trophy.
I loved watching John Stockton play, he truly played the point guard position the way it should be played. you are the greatest john....i love basketball and the nba coz of you...
One of the greatest point guards of alltime! No doubt!
A GREAT man!
Point Guard Perfection

Pure love and talent come from the Lord.. Thank you so much for your efforts for nba.. Lodi!!
Jerry Sloan.....a Coach's coach...and a man's man.
Man he was exciting to watch. My four favorite players of all time Stockton, Malone, Hornacek, ane Jordan. Ironicall the latter tormented the first three.
Wow I never saw this. Thanks for the upload!
The ending says it all. Stockton walking away as Karl and Jerry look up at all that has ended.
Prototype point guard and really tough in a league that valued(once upon a time) toughness.
god i miss Stockton and Malone playing togheter
I remember playing basketball at recess in grade school. We had a rule for when you could call out, "I get to be John Stockton!" Whoever was second was stuck being Jeff Hornacek, or worse, Howard Eisley.
John Stockon; Hero of Utah Jazz

Same as the sacramento kings dynasty. They got botched.
When basketball was about family and the team rather than money
The Most Unselfish player in The History of the NBA
and extremely underrated
master playmaker.
my favorite player...THE GREATEST POINT GUARD IN THE HISTORY OF BASKETBALL
@TheJrlayno What does John Stockton work now? Any plans to coach at Gonzaga or Utah?
Are these the same fans that booed when he was drafted in 1984? How times change.
They didn't "boo" they were saying "who?" He himself said he wasn't really to even be drafted.
it was who not boo
Malone in those clothes looks like he was just released from the jail lol
@Galastin 5:33 on he says he played with the greatest power forward Karl Malone.
What a player.
I like how when he thanks all the great teammates he's played with he doesn't mention Karl
Class.

When did this happen? Did they open up the Delta Center just for this, without a game or a jersey retirement banner?
If he could have at least won just one championship he could have further cemented his stature as the GOAT in the point guard position. Same is true with Karl Malone, if he had just one ring then he would have been the greatest PF position to the eyes of many. - A Magic Johnson fan growing up.
Solid defense? He is an all time leader in steals, man.
Stockton could make a blind guy score 10 points

ummm no he didn't, he wanted to talk about him separately, that's why he mentioned him a minute after the fact
5:43...interesting beard dude...Uh, I meant John Stockton is the best!
This is what fans of big market teams don't get.
john would have multiple championships if it wasnt for one name--MICHAEL JORDAN
is karl malone the only black person in utah?
No, and you're a moron.
Bill Russel
No, there's like twenty or thirty others. They're pretty cool. Half of them play for the jazz.

Does anyone know if Stockton turned Mormon? I've always been curious about what it would be like to play for the Jazz. Smaller Market, unlike any in the League, because I'm pretty sure it's 90% Mormon. Just curious. Thank you.
No. He and Nada are devout Catholics.
Wow. Devout Catholics in a Mormon world. Good for John. Class act!
Not 90% more like 60 ish % but they definitely control the politics and control most of the state.
It's about 50/50 in Salt Lake City as far as the Mormon thing goes now. Of that 50%, I'm guessing about 50% actually practice faithfully vs. are Mormon in name only...and probably less than that.
