    The Spur is a pretty wild offering from Transition. It's pretty different for them too. It is light, snappy, quick, and loves going uphill. True to Transitions form, though it is a blast on the DH.

    Great vid and review! Kinda crazy I'm shopping for this bike, came across this review while simultaneously going through recovery for a neck injury. Good to see Connor back at it so quickly. I'll need a few more months for things to setup 100% but will be shredding on a Spur when it happens and this vid was perfect inspiration. Good stuff!

      Dude - It's been the perfect recovery bike. Stable enough in the bumps, but really shines on mellower stuff so I don't push it too much. Can't wait to really open it up and see what it can do next year.

    I just demoed this bike for 3 rides on various terrain. I was impressed how it did on technical rocky climbs with great traction and NO front end wandering. I think it does well going down rocky trails without feeling like you’re going OTB. It will take some getting used to tight corners with the long wheelbase but it feels really stable going going downhill fast. My biggest complaint was numerous pedal strikes in rocky terrain because of the low BB. My old epic 29er gets a lot less pedal strikes but is twitchy. I’m looking to check out new epic evo next.

    • @bikersedge
      @bikersedge  4 роки тому

      I've heard of folks having issues with pedal strikes on this bike , but I've put in over 50 miles on mine and yet to have a single one. Not bragging about anything, just not sure what the difference is.

    • @ederler1129
      @ederler1129 4 роки тому +1

      Biker's Edge hmm. How much sag did you run? I think I was about 30% when I was getting pedal strikes. At 25% the rear end felt too stiff and I was only using about 75% of the travel so I lowered the pressure to 30% and it felt better, but got pedal strikes. Also, the shock was leaking some oil, so maybe it wasn’t working right. Maybe I’ll see if I can try it again. I let the shop know it was seeping oil.

    • @bikersedge
      @bikersedge  4 роки тому +4

      I'm running 28-29% Maybe thats the ticket. It feel soft enough off the top and I rarely have a rough bottom out. About the oil. Some leaking is normal, but every spur we've seen with the SidLuxe has been leaking oil on the stanchion more than normal. We are thinking they were overfilled at the factory. After about 50 miles mine has settled down on the leaking. The performance hasn't been effected so far.

    Hey Connor, awesome review as always! So you've owned this bike for a bit now right? How would you say it handles the slower tech trails on the way down? I'd imagine at least for the higher speed tech trails it'd get tossed around quite a bit.
    For context I'm debating between a Spur and a Rascal. I understand they may be in different categories but I'm not sure how much descending capability I'm giving up if I went with the Spur. Thanks!

    • @bikersedge
      @bikersedge  3 роки тому +1

      Hey thanks!
      It handles tech surprisingly well considering the category it’s in. I’m always surprised by what it lets me get away with. Half the time I forget I’m on a short travel almost XC bike. The place where I’m reminded is on harsh, flat landings. Pretty much everywhere else it punches way above its weight class.

    Omg iam so confused. Maybe you can help me. Iam Coming from being an Santa Cruz owner since a long time. I got Nomad 3, Nomad 4, 5010 3, 5010 4 and now iam owning a bullit. Iam searching for a Bike now which is light, and you can ride like 30km rides with saying about 1000-1500m of elevation. I dont have the roughest terrain here but also no shaped flowtrails. Kinda natural singletracks in S3 Categorie. But i also go on holidays in the alpine region of Austria where your have slow and techy black trails and maybee once or twice in the Bikepark. So i am searching for something like a tallboy or Spur or maybee the new Rocky Element. 90% of the time i am riding in my S3 Region. So what do you think would fit the best. Thx

    • @bikersedge

    I love the look of that bike! Great review. Im guessing it rides similar to my Hei Hei crdl 100/120, which is a hoot, but with the Spur’s more current geometry, I’m guessing it’s even more fun going down. If you’ve ridden the Kona, I’d love your thoughts. I live in PC, so I might find an excuse to go north and try one out. Enjoying your channel, btw.

    Yeah I love my spur. I liken it to when I used surf in High School. I had 7' 2" fun board that I would rip on all day. When I wanted to get "better" I sold that and bought a 5' 9" surfboard. Granted I am 5' 7" myself. I never had as much fun on that board and probably part of the reason I stopped surfing over the years. As I am getting older, I want to cover more miles and build a healthy heart through riding. This bike takes care of that for me without fooling myself that I am some pro down hill mountain biker that needs massive travel. I could see it lacking though for the rider who is constantly hitting black diamond style runs. I really love this bike. With that said, if the budget permitted, I may look into a longer travel bike in addition to this one if I ride a more challenging trails, but at this time, the bike is my go to do it all setup :) Happy riding

    Torn between this new spur and a tallboy for an efficient "backcountry" all day epic kind of bike that'll handle chunky terrain. Demo'd a tallboy last November and really enjoyed it, especially for how bottomless and capable it felt descending. Sounds like the tallboy has it beat on the descents but not so much on the climbs from your review. What made the spur feel better climbing besides being a couple pounds lighter?

    • @bikersedge
      @bikersedge  4 роки тому +2

      The Spur certainly has the TB beat on climbs. It is more efficient, rolls quicker and is much lighter. The Climbing position is better too.
      On descents, I think they are neck and neck. The Spur feels just as bottomless but maybe a little less plush in the initial stroke. The extra 10mm of fork travel is helpful too. That said, I'd say the Spur. an hold it's own just fine with the TB.

    • @GTHEK50
      @GTHEK50 4 роки тому

      Biker's Edge you did mention at one point that the Tallboy felt more “poppy”. I’m in relatively flat terrain so not a lot of higher speed descending. I rode the Tallboy and it was fun, but came to life the faster I went. So by more poppy, do you mean at higher speeds? Honestly I’d be happy with a Tallboy all day long as my next bike, but if this thing is a bit more engaging at lower speeds that would be a plus...what would you say on that. I want something that likes to pump and rail corners. The TB was good, but at lower speeds didn’t feel like a standout

    • @bikersedge
      @bikersedge  4 роки тому +1

      The Spur has slightly steeper geo than the TB so it will tend to handle better at slow speeds. The Tallboy felt "poppier" as in it was easier to get higher off of jumps than the Spur.
      The Spur feels amazing in the corners. The suspension is very supportive so you get a little more return when pumping through berms and corners.

    Thoughts on this bike for rooty, rocky tech and punchy climbs? (New England)

    • @bikersedge
      @bikersedge  3 роки тому +1

      I’m not familiar with New England trails. This bike isn’t as nimble as others in the category but it handles tech and high speeds very well. It’s a great climber too. If your trails get really tight, there might be other bikes that would suit your trails better. I’m thinking of the SB115, Ripley and possibly the Tallboy.

  • @Kendubious
    @Kendubious 3 роки тому

    Hi a few questions, What is your weight? do you think a lighter rider would benefit much when going down hill in regards to available travel and your thoughts on BB height on techy climbing( would a shorter crank be better?) and what is the widest tire you think it would run? Thanks for your review.

    • @bikersedge
      @bikersedge  3 роки тому

      I weigh 180. I don’t think weight has anything to do with travel amounts. I can tune my shock for my weight just like a lighter rider would tune it for theirs.
      I haven’t noticed a ton of pedal strikes, although a 170mm crank wouldn’t hurt. I think technique prevents pedal strikes more than anything.
      I ran a 2.4 dissector on the rear. I really wouldn’t go wider than that. The fork will clear wider though.

      @@bikersedge you can keep the Scalpel and Oiz, still XC. The 115 to 120 suspension with slacker geo is the sweet spot. My bet is on the Yeti but Transition may have learned how to build a short travel.

    do you think the Spur would hold up for a clydesdale?

    • @bikersedge
      @bikersedge  3 роки тому +1

      Not a problem at all. The frame is plenty stout. If you want one step burlier, the Tallboy would be a great option too. That frame is really stiff.

  • @yarrik8580

    I really like many thing about this bike, but once you said it isn't as poppy as Tallboy it still makes me want to go with Tallboy even if it's 5 pounds heavier.

    • @bikersedge

      There's something to be said for a bike that jumps well. The Spur isn't bad by any means. The Tallboy is just exceptional.

      The other day I rode a Specialized Camber carbon, old 2017 model, 120 mm front and rear, really light XCish, got to a speed bump and tried to use It as a mini ramp to pop the bike up... what a dissapointment, bike barely separated from the ground... I ride a tallboy 4 as my main ride, that thing just pops off the ground with so much ease... it is crazy fun.

      Actually mine only had the fit 4. I had to send the SID back for the bushing play warranty. While I waited I threw a 34 on there so I could keep riding. Ended up just sticking with it since it was on there. They’re both solid forks. 34 feels a bit burlier than the SID.

    • @bikersedge

      Transition specifically recommends not running greater than a 120mm fork. I thing with 140 up front the rear would start getting pretty outgunned.
      Instead of a typical Horst link with a pivot near the rear axle this frame is basically a single pivot that relies on seat stay flex near the axle. It actually works very well.

    You haven't been riding because you had a broken neck!? Thats weak! Haha. Im really interested in this bike to replace my hardtail on rides my enduro bike is way over the top for. just worried 120 on the front isn't enough. Hopefully i can get a test in the UK

      If I had only broken 5 vertebrae I would have still ridden, but the 6th was too many to ride responsibly.
      I normally ride big bikes but the Spur has been very solid. No issues with 120 up front. It’s not the bike for DH terrain but it’s great for flowy and fast stuff.

      Biker's Edge yes going OTB head first into the ground isn’t good for your spine or any part of your body! I recently separated a few ribs and broke one, and at 46 the ground seems to be much harder! Glad you recovered and can continue riding! I have a hard hitting trail(Commencal) trail smasher but love how Transition put this 120 mm travel xc/trail rocket geo together! Wasn’t expecting this from them and when I first saw it knew it would be a good choice. Now all I got to do is put that $$$$ together and pull the trigger.
