  • Another question from a subscriber answered here...does sit bone width determine your saddle selection. While this is an okay place to start it's far from a complete 1-to-1 correlation. There can be many other factors of you as a rider that determine the best seat. Also, the number of variables among saddles is pretty mind-boggling, so a no nonsense approach to saddle selection is key.

    In my bike fit, he replaced the saddle which he said was vital in adding stability to my pedaling. My hips were rocking too much, apparently I was on too narrow of a saddle. He put me on a Specialized Pro Mimic, everything changed from there. He was able to dial me in after that.

    It's been a wild ride finding a saddle for myself. Some suggestions of what to get for myself have been the opposite of what I need. I tried an SQ Labs saddle and it was fantastic for me.

    Great videos, all makes sense. One that I'm struggling with in terms of my saddle (and yes I had a bike fit but couldn't get on with the saddle that came with the bike) is chafing down one side only even though the saddle is perfectly aligned. Now started on my first Fizik demo saddle (Aliante Regular) so will see how I get on.

    Glad you put it this way. I worry about changing contact points on the bike, which might be covering up another fit issue. I think the saddle gets a lot of attention because of which (body) parts it contacts.

    If just sitting on the saddle causes discomfort then firmness is probably the issue. No amount of positioning will reduce the pain.
    My factory seat felt like someone was jambing a thumb hard against the bone, actually felt like a bruise after.

      For me a Brooks Imperial is the best. Its a B17 with a perennial cutout. However my sitbones are WIDE 125mm apart and I weigh btw 210-220 lbs. A thin light guy I imagine would hate Brooks Saddles. They're perfect however for Clydes.

    With a sitbone width of 103mm (measured on Specialize assometer), would Fizik's Aliante (143mm) and Antares 00 (140mm) be too wide regardless of lean angle. Would the Arione be better for me in spite of being a Chamelian. Would appreciate opinions.

    Great videos! Very informative. I'm curious why so many top saddle makers only offer 130 widths, and how so many pros seem to use 130 saddles. Are their sit bones really that narrow, or do they simply accept any discomfort for the sake of saving weight?

    • @bikefitadviser7012
      @bikefitadviser7012  7 років тому +3

      Peter, that's a good question. I think a lot of it is out of simplicity and ease of production rather than a focus on the vast number of riders out there. I think many of the pros actually fit those saddles well, and the ones that don't are often willing to deal with some discomfort for a variety of reasons - unwillingness to upset a sponsor, perceived weight benefit, simply because they've always ridden these types of saddles, that sort of thing. Some might never have been put in a situation to realize that there might be a better, more comfortable way

    I truly enjoy and appreciate your instruction and have learned so much. I have a general question. I’m 5’8” tall with actual 31” inseam measurement (not pant length), I’m in my 60’s but fairly fit and just started riding a year ago but love the sport and want to ride more and longer distances. When I research bikes the charts usually put me fitting both a S and M bike size as I’m directly in the middle of both sizes. I won’t ask you specifically for myself but in general would a person like myself be better served purchasing the smaller or larger bike size? Thanks so very much and I’m excited for your opinion.

    My right knees VMO always hits the top tube when riding hard doing intervals on the turbo. I am running a Fizik Arione and do like it. However it is narrow and I have a medium/large pelvis. Would a wider saddle such as Specialized power help widen out my pedal stance a bit?

    I had a question maybe you can help with.
    My current saddle/bike fit seems to feel pretty comfortable when riding outside. I am able to tolerate 2-3 hours before I begin to shift around. Mostly in the TT position on my Triathlon bike. However once I hit the bad weather and hook my bike up to a trainer, I am uncomfortable in as little as 40 minutes. Any reasons to explain this? It makes my trainer work much less enjoyable!
    Thanks in advance!!!

    Extremly useful and some of the tips and reasoning seems to match long time cyclist friends (newbee myself in a bit of pain..). I'll definetely check out my local area (Stockholm, Sweden) for some help. Basiclly, try a lot of variants, do some sit bone measurements to get in the ballpark and get the overall fit sorted first. 🤘🏽 Would be interesting to hear your thoughts on german SQLab and their Ergowave, Active and other seemingly scientific approaches to saddles and our butts, does their stuff makes sense behind the trademarks and marketing prose?

      Have you looked at some of this channel's other videos? His advice is that usually it's not the saddle that is causing the problem, it's bike setup and fit. If different saddles are giving the same problem check your riding geometry. This bloke has a lot of great advice.

    • @gaelenbolland7787
      @gaelenbolland7787 7 років тому +1

      My local shop will let you try one for up to 30 days, you have to buy it, but as long as you don't crash and trash it you can return/exchange it. I'm on my 3rd one and it's been a slight improvement each time, figuring out what I like/don't like. Your best bet is get out there and talk to the shops in your area, see what they say about testing saddles and how good their return policies are.

      I have always understood Brooks saddles require a lot of patience to break them in. Your description is not atypical. But please, this only what I have heard from other cyclist, not my own experience with the Brooks saddle. BTW, I feel that pain, it just shuts down the rest of the body and takes the piss out of riding one more stroke. I'd like to share this. I rode for many years when I was much younger, then I hanged the bike in the garage for 13 years. What I did to get back on to the bike was to buy a fat cushy saddle and ride on an indoor trainer. After about 2-3 weeks I was able to transition back on to my old "racing/sport" saddle again. I still have those sit-bone problems on occasions towards the end of my 2 hour ride.. Note: I have never been fitted by a proper knowledgeable cyclist technician(when I was younger I didn't have sit bone issues). This might solve the problem for you. I would go to the bike shop where you bought your TREK and ask for a fitting. Not sure if they will charge you, but probably worth it if you can afford the fee. If you bought the bike online you can still go to a bike shop where they will provide the service. Good luck.

    Cool images depending on the position!
    I've been curious about the fizik saddle selection and I don't know if you realised this, but the saddle for snakes, the flexible people, accounts for NO pelvis rotation. So this type of people can touch their toes with their hands without pelvis rotation, as fizik indicates in their updated site. On the other hand, no flexible people rotates more the pelvis, in their rationale. So, what if you're flexible AND rotate your pelvis, which I think makes more sense? That's very confusing. In any case, based on pelvis rotation alone, I changed from the arione (flexible) to the antares (mid-way) and it felt much better. Based solely on their old info, which is being able to touch your toes, I'd remain on arione. Strange...

    • @bikefitadviser7012
      @bikefitadviser7012  7 років тому +1

      Enda Bigarella yes I didn't state that entirely clearly. the "snake" saddles are for those who have a lot of flexibility and their reasoning is that these people will exhibit less motion thru the pelvis on the saddle. That was my point exactly -- I am flexible, and while I should have less pelvic movement and should therefore tolerate snake saddles the best, I don't. (incidentally, I have a very stationary pelvis with little movement and yet I'm still more comfortable on their "bull" saddle, the Alliante.
