Great video about your set up. I took a lot of the things you did and creating a spot in my garage. Went with the DIY 9x12 Carls Premium Screen and went with the Optoma 1090 even though it might be a little overkill (I might want to use it for movies or even playing xbox). For my hitting pad I went with the Country Club Elite 5x5 mat. My plan is to lay down 1 inch exercise mats to enclose the 5x5 mat over a 12 foot by 17 foot rectangle. This should be enough to place the ball 8 feet to the screen and place the Mevo+ 8 feet from the ball with a little left over behind. I have also bought a Wellput 13 foot mat that I plan to try and put next to the hitting mat to simulate putting the best you can. I have bought a 13x17 foot piece of putting green turf off of amazon and I will plan to cut it. My question for you is: How do you level off the small height discrepancies? My hitting mat measures at 1.75". The exercise mat measures 1 inch and the putting green turf measures 0.47 inches. So I have about a little more than a quarter inch to make up. Ive thought about putting plywood down either underneath the exercise mat or on top of the exercise mat but Im afraid that the irregularities of the wood on top may not allow the grass to sit level. Any other thoughts you may have to level off things or is a 1/4 inch not worth the worry?
Your videos are great and very helpful. I am finalizing my sim layout and using a lot of your ideas. Can I ask why you decided to keep the foam tile and putting turf INSIDE the enclosure space and not go wall to wall? Also what is the internal width within the enclosure that you arrived at when calculating the width of foam tile and putting turf to order for a precise fit? I have 128" width in my sim space and looking to order a custom sized DIY Carl's place enclosure at 124" wide or close to that. I was wondering if I should go wall to wall and cut the turf and tiles OR whether I just go with a standard 10foot wide tile and turf solution and avoid all the cutting? Appreciate your guidance.
I just decided that based off my enclosure width it made more sense to go inside instead of all the way around and I also wanted the rough strip for hiding wires and making it more official. I basically just started with the enclosure size I wanted to fit the space and added the turf after.
Enjoy watching these update videos and that you wouldn't change a whole lot with your setup. Curious what your turf you are going to try is. I live in Canada so have fewer options here but am planning to do as you have done and lay the turf on the 1" foam mats and have a DIY insert that can be replaced easily once it starts to wear out. I am likely going to go with a retractable screen though as I have a door that is in the middle of the wall I want to hit against so need it to be accessible. I also want to be able to hit balls with my vehicle still in the garage so want the option to be able to quickly lay the hitting area up against the wall when not in use so might have to build it in sections in order to be able to do that as well as be able to expand it for when I have buddies over and want to move the vehicle out of the garage.
Were you able to set a custom resolution using your NVIDIA graphics card on the projector? I got the same one and when I try to put 1440x1080 (I have a 4:3 setup) it says display does not support it. Optoma customer service was of no help
Appreciate the effort you put into these videos and the DIY approach! If you were starting a new build today would you still go with the Optoma GT1090HDR? Curious if you’ve been tempted to go 4K? My screen size will be similar to yours (4:3).
I would still go with the GT1090HDR, mainly for its short throw. But, I am anxiously hoping for a true 4k projector with a similar throw, just haven’t seen one yet. Having the enclosure makes it necessary to angle the projector upwards which increases throw distance further and most 4k would need to be like 12’+ back and risk shadow casting while hitting.

Great video and good job on the diy. I have the same screen and I thought I was the only one that had problems with the burning from wedges. Have you tried cleaning the spots? I’ve only had my for a couple weeks. Thanks again!
I have not tried cleaning the burns, but when the projector is on, you really can’t tell all that much. I would make sure your using newer good condition balls with clean clubs. I recommend the Kirkland balls as they are really affordable, have a urethane cover which doesn’t ballon up and hit higher on the screen.
@@PixelGolf I agree it’s totally unnoticeable when the screen is on! I am using the v2’s Kirkland from Costco. I’m getting too much spin and had to change balls.
With the Bushnell and Skytrak camera based style monitors, you just need enough room to swing a club, but I would say at least 7’ so you don’t feel crammed and limit the chances of shadow casting from the projector. If you are going to be closer, make sure to look at shorter short throw projectors like the Optoma.
Very informative video. Im considering a similar project and have a few questions/concerns. My room is 10'W X 12'L X 10'H I realize i will not be able to hit in the center of the room so it will be offset 6'9" one way set up for RH golfer. Also because of room size i would probably run projector in 1:1 aspect ration. Will a 4:3 projector work all right with this setup. Thanks for your help
While I’ve never had this issue, I know that those alterations will be made through the software. For example, Foresight has a room config tool and settings in the software to adjust for off center hitting.
@@PixelGolf Would your recommendation be to fill the wall with as big of a screen that will fit and i will make adjustments in software. Will i be able to make projector fit any size screen? I see when reading about the Bushnell monitor they mention setting the target line. Is that to resolve off center hitting? Thanks
The target line can be moved. As for the screen… I would go with the biggest you can get while keeping your projector distance required to fill that screen and your hitting location in mind. For example, my screen is 89”h x 117” wide and with the Optoma GT1090HDR it is 7.5’ back to fill that image horizontally(89”), which is the important dimension to keep in mind as the width can be trimmed via the computer settings.
At $1,500 mark I’d be hard pressed to get anything other than the 1090HDR. While 4K sounds appealing, and I’ve considered it myself, the lumens tend to be lower on 4K at this price point and Optoma has the edge on the short throw distance. In my set up having that short throw is key.

I believe BenQ offered to send me that unit to test, but they didn’t offer enough turnaround time unfortunately… I’ll have to look into that one! Main thing is check the through distance for your screen size and make sure it works. Projector Central has a calculator feature that gets pretty close.

What’s your opinion of the black nylon portion at the bottom of the screen vs screens that have the white screen go all the way to the bottom? You have become the reference point for my build!….and I thank you
I prefer the black border at the bottom. I think it just frames it out nicely rather than looking unfinished. I’m glad to hear that, thank you for subscribing!
Great set up. Question:With lob wedges do you every miss the screen or clip the black portion of the enclosure? I tend to hit a high ball and trying to determine how much depth i should go with and distance of the ball to the screen. Thanks, Chris
Never hit outside of the enclosure, but I have ballooned one into the canopy a few times… I don’t really is anything over a 56* for full swings. Also, the hitting mat and ball you use will dictate how high it could go.
The best way is to use projectorcentral.com calculator to get a rough idea of distance and then move the projector back until it fills the screen vertically. The width can be adjusted on the graphics card, but the height is pretty much dictated by the distance of the projector from the screen.
Love your videos and details put into them. But... I have a question. What are your thoughts on going with a full package that I can finance? I love the cheaper DIY route but all that money has to be there. As a firefighter, having 5-6K (or more) laying around to do this isn't realistic for me. Yes, I could save, but in your opinion, is it beneficial to just get a package for 10k that I can finance instead of piecing everything together? Busnell has their package at $9,999 without laptop, finance for 2 years no interest.$348 a month. If you think I could get much better quality by slowly buying everything and putting it together, I may just do that. If so, what would be the fastest way to "get golfing" without buying everything at once? Will be a garage set-up btw. Thank you in advance!!
Thank you for the kind words! In all honesty, I would not finance that package… Bushnell not listing the projector and screen details raises a red flag to be honest. I would get a pre owned LaunchPro, Plenty out there or new if you can still find one for $2999, or maybe finance an unlocked GC3 if it’s interest free. Get yourself a Carls DIY screen(The Best Out there Imo) and just do the preferred screen for now, then upgrade to a premium screen if necessary down the road. Check open box deals at Best Buy or other stores for a good laptop, something with an Nvidia 3060/3070/3080 card, intel i5/i7 and at least 16gb of ram, storage space doesn’t matter that much if you can save. Best Buy also offers interest free through their card if paid of in 12 months I believe… You can also get a projector through them(check Open Box). So, Finance the projector and laptop through BB or similar, pay off within the year so not interest, buy the Carls outright($7-800), get or make a cheap hitting mat and figure and maybe look into getting a LP/GC3 however funds permit. Definitely don’t break the bank though.

Where is your projector mounted in relation to the hitting area and how high is it mounted?
Check my other video covering all specs
How far away is the mevo from the screen?
16 feet
Can you give guidance on how far away your projector sits from your screen?
The best way is to use projectorcentral.com calculator to get a rough idea of distance and then move the projector back until it fills the screen vertically. The width can be adjusted on the graphics card, but the height is pretty much dictated by the distance of the projector from the screen.
@@PixelGolf Thank you. Do you set your projector to 4:3?
Do you use a driver on this setup?
Absolutely! It is a bit loud indoors, but not a problem.
is the laptop you are using the same one in the link? Looks different. Thanks for the help !
I use the Optoma GT1090HDR, the one listed is basically the same one under a different PN.
Here's a question that I've wondered: ever hit a flop shot and hit the ball into the ceiling?
I have got brave and hit some short flip chips, luckily no ceiling damage so far😂
How far is your projector from your screen?
About 7.5’
This is really cool! How much (roughly) did the whole set up cost?
Just under $4000 usd without the launch monitor. You can do a Mevo + and keep it under 6. Check my video showing this build breakdown with the Mevo+
@@PixelGolf thank you!
Great video. I am considering purchasing a GC3 and can see that you are using GS Pro software albeit that it's not on Foresight list of compatible software. How easy (or difficult) is it to install and pair the GS Pro software with the GC3 / Bushnell LP? Would you recommend me going that route? Many thanks and keep these videos coming!
It’s really easy. Check the discord page, it has everything you need.
@@PixelGolf do you have the link to the discord. I’d like to run gspro as well. Thanks for the videos keep ‘em coming
Any link for that disky? I have the Bushnell also and looking to see what GSPro is all about.
Why not rotate your mat 180 degrees?
Can you elaborate on your question? I don’t see a benefit in rotating it 180*
Bad link for the laptop fyi
Thank you! I’ll have my team(wife) get it fixed😂
4:3 ratio.......... 8X12? screen
