Hey a bit of advice for the Institute assault on the Castle. After you liberate it, you can send your companions there. That way when the fight goes down you have more backup side they cant die. Dogmeat is an easy grab for this, Codsworth is a good one too. McCready can easily be bought with money in Good Neighbor and Nick you can pick up on the main quest line. Id like to recommend either a Fallout 3 Rock It Launcher only or a Fallout 4 Junk jet only challenge. I did the RIL run myself and it was actually kinda fun
VATS builds are definitely one of my favourite ways to do Fallout. Lets you just step into a room and clear it out near-instantly. Makes it into kind of an old west gunslinger simulator. Works a lot like Red Dead's deadeye mechanic like that.
I also had the missing Prydwen issue once. That was because I left Fort Hagen the same way I entered. (Maybe thats what you did, but it's not in the video so idk) You have to exit through the roof and unlock the door there with the terminal, that triggers Prydwen arrival.
I am sure you know this by now but if you don't use the roof exit where you finished Kellog, the blimp doesn't show up. I saw this on a few videos. I think it was Wanderer who took his character back long after that fight, went out the right door, then the epic arrival spawned.
I'm the type of person who really likes watching long videos. So I REALLY like your fallout videos. A nice break from your pokemon content while still having both be super entertaining. Thank you for the great content!
I think the reason everyone turned hostile the instant you entered the fight pit is because they cut all the content around it and it was easiest just to make everyone shoot you on sight
I think you should consider an ‘artillery only’ run. On this you have to either rush the broadsider or the artillery from the castle and only use those. Or perhaps do a ‘uniques base models only’ where the guns cannot have variants. So the broadsider, cryolater, deliverer, grognaks axe and junk jet. Weapons you can get no alternate version of. You could even do unique clothes and armour too.
This game is clearly held together by duct tape. Maybe this one person has an Irish accent because she was an Irish immigrant who went into the vault when the bombs were dropped or her ancestors were. 50:52 It's a T-800!
I did a 90% VATS build... It was basically me running into a shitload of enemies and just shouting "Its High Noon" before gunning everyone down with a revolver
I remember the luck+agility stealth pistol build being pretty busted. You can fire the majority of a clip with a full bar of AP and every single shot will net you a sneak critical
Starting the video. Personally, I think it'll be tough in the beginning, but with a bit of luck and the right perks it'll be pretty easy mid to late-game. Starting off, SPECIAL stats look good - I'd use the You're Special book on Luck and pick Four Leaf Clover over Mysterious Stranger though. At the triggerman's hideout portion now, and Critical Banker is great to get early on. You mention not using your Crits enough, and Critical Banker solves the issue of using them too much, or trying to save them and not using them enough. Keep a Crit banked, and then just use the bar once it gets filled - especially in longer-range areas like this when your short-mid range weapon has sub-par accuracy, and your long-range weapon... sucks. :P I love that scene with the Railroad. Honestly, I imagine the secret door is just to keep out raiders and the like. Less "security door" and more "hidden door with a hidden doorknob to keep idiots and bricks-for-brains raiders out." (also given Deacon's personality, it's hard to tell if he's supposed to be serious with that comment.) I always snipe the guard there in the triggerman's hideout from across the room, no matter what playthrough I'm doing. Always fun. It's not too far-fetched that Nick knows Dogmeat. It's also not too far-fetched that Dogmeat is the only dog in the local Wasteland that knows to respond to a dog whistle. Personally, I would've loved it if the game was designed to let you skip straight to Fort Hagen after leaving the Vault. You'd still have to go save Nick probably, but would allow you to skip going to Kellogg's place. Hancock was shanking the dude because he was being disrespectful to him, I believe. The fact that you managed to have the Brotherhood questline break that much on you is... impressive, actually. (also, the Brotherhood's questline is probably my second-least favorite questline. Railroad is my least, purely because it's just "The Institute's questline, but with extra steps and the ending chopped off and a new one glued on.") Minutemen ending is sort of the thing you're supposed to do over the course of the game, I feel. Like, by the time you're done with the Reunions if you hit up Minutemen quests along the way, you'll probably have at least taken back The Castle already. Also I remember the first time I did it, I had made a wall to "patch up" the walls of The Castle, so it was a bit easier since all the enemies would funnel through a single portion. This was a fun run! Also, I have another challenge suggestion for you: Can you beat Fallout 4 with only explosive weapons? So any form of grenades, rocket launchers, mini-nukes, and any weapon with the Explosive Legendary modifier (like the unique gun Spray 'N' Pray) are allowed. (I forget if I already suggested this one on the previous FO4 video) Another idea would be "Can you beat Fallout 4 with only robotic companions" using the Automatron DLC. Start with Codsworth, unlock the Automatron DLC, then just use robots made from that DLC.
I feel like high luck is essencial to any VATS build. The high-end luck perks when combined can allow you to use a critical hits non-stop and since criticals have 100% accuracy then perception becomes irrelevant.
Something I do a lot in Elden Ring is target an enemy *behind* my actual target and move my body so we're all lined up with the non-targeted one in the middle, so that a piercing attack will hit them both. Could you have done that with the Synths so you could use VATS to hit Kellogg while aiming at a Synth? 🤣
@@HomeCookinMTG It doesn't need to hit the synth behind kellogg, just kellogg. I was giving an example of a use case from another game to demonstrate the concept of positioning oneself to hit a target you can't lock onto. Piercing is irrelevant here, because //the ONLY goal is to hit kellogg//
@@maiabones And I'm telling you that "Piercing" isn't a thing a fallout 4. You will hit one or the other unless you have ricochet. And there is no point in trying to set up what you're explaining. Fallout 4's combat isn't complex enough to worry about shit like that. If you don't have a shot at kellog you just move to another spot in the room where you do, rather than hoping the stars align w/ your vats shot or we.
@@TheRaven752 yeah and I'm saying no. Because if something is in your way VATS will not let you aim at whatever's behind it and if Kellogg is in between you and the synth why wouldn't you just aim at Kellogg in the first place if Kellogg is who you're trying to hit?
Fun fact! People have found that idiot savant is actually the MOST efficient way of getting xp. Basically, they snap that up then go into build mode in a base and just build and scrap a fence post a bunch of times and the xp just piles up. Like the amount of procs it gives you gets you.way more xp than being smart does. It's really fascinating
Me watching this video without knowing anything about fallout except for what you talked about in the other run, but still enjoying it because I love your content
First Fallout video I ever watched on the channel and the first video of Fallout I watched ever. A friend of mine from Europe recommended it. It's a darn shame that I never played Fallout. Even casually.
Your challenges are almost making me want to give Fallout 4 another chance. Plus super excited to see a heart gold run next week. It's an excellent game
I love replaying Bethesda games on PC. The console commands remove all the unwanted grind (like lockpick and hacking skills) so I can get to the story moments I love quicker.
I’m doing a VATS focused build right now, and my best friend has been Deliverer (Tommy Whisper’s gun). It’s kitted out right out of the gate with VATS modifications that make it a really powerful tool for this sort of playthrough.
Hey for your next Pokemon challenge, I think a fun one would be an acorn balls team nuzlocke. It could be themed to the ball or utilizing the gen 2 bugs to determine which are best. Or you can just use them how they are designed to work in the remakes.
Cait mentions being from "across the pond", and there is a fallout board game that appears to be canon that has a fully functional ocean tanker with many people living on and manning it that gets stuck in bosting during the cold winter the year before fallout 4 starts.
Hi MDB, first of all, I would like to thank you for your great work and videos. It has often helped me cheer up, especially last year when I had some severe health issues and wasn't able to do much more than watch videos. Although I'm mostly only watching your challenge videos, I take a peek at some of your other series as well. I also enjoy having your friends either play with you or just being in the call. Keep up the good work and stay as you are. I hope your health issues are getting better as well and that you are back to top condition and stay that way! As a recommendation for a challenge: Have you heard about Coromon? It's a game that is heavily inspired by Pokemon. I have just started my own playthrough of the game and find it quite refreshing compared to Pokemon. Your character can talk o.O It has quite a few built on options (no items in battle, Coromon defeated in battle --> leaves your team, only X heals in a Health Center (Pokemon Center) and some more as well as some quality if life options. It has a built in randomizer as well, although I don't know what you are able to set, as I assume I have to play through the game first to unlock it. As far as a challenge is concerned, I'm not that far into the game yet, so I don't know all of the mons, but a playthrough with a Swurmy (little worm) or maybe Silquil (little raven) would be cool. Thanks so much and have a nice day Rhuun
If you're going to outright kill father in a play though, wait until he unlocks the door to get to the rest of the institute, then go wild with kills and collecting a massive amount of loot, at that point being over incombered isn't really issue as many of the enemy come running to you, and when you leave you'll be at a place you can drop everything off at.
40:23 did you not go through the elevator that leads from that basement to the roof? I remember my first ever play through where i thought something broke so i TCL'd back to the door you enter the basement from so therefore the prydwyn didn't spawn, this wasn't a problem until i tried doing the railroad mission where you're tasked with blowing up their airship... and so the pilot (for the vertibird you have to steal to get up to the prydwyn) just... flew off into the sea. just goes to show that with bethesda games, even the game working as intended (in my case) felt like a glitch, Bethesd really needs to step up their game, or make a brand new engine that isn't based off of the one for FUCKING MORROWIND
A very hard challenge that you could try MDB is "Can I beat Fallout 4 Frost mod?". It would be a multiple part series. Trying to argue otherwise would be fruitless. Best of luck, MDB.
Glad to hear you're doing well :) For a run suggestion, I think it'd be fun to do either a Rock-It Launcher (Fallout 3) or Junk Jet (Fallout 4) only playthrough :p
Regarding people being able to read in Fallout, remember Piper has a written newspaper she successful sells in Diamond city. Most people can still read.
12:40 The why is because Bethesda ran out of time so cut a bunch of content around the Combat Zone. It was originally going to be like the Arena in Oblivion and there's still some of that dialogue in the game files.
I think I use a mod called intelligent or genius savant. It does the opposite of idiot savant where the more intelligent you are the more likely it activates. Giving you the benefit of increased experience from intelligence and the perk bonus.
All the questions and confusion you had about the Combat Zone were the result of changes late in development. It was meant to be a fully functional fighting arena that the player can participate in, or bet on, with shops and raider NPCs, and a quest line leading up to recruiting Cait. But all that was cut for time, and they just populated it with generic raiders. There's a mod that restores it, as much of the intended Combat Zone was left in the game files, just un-implemented.
if you are going to use any mods I might reccomend the frost mod if you want a really brutal challenge later. not something for now but something to look into. basically takes fallout and puts you in the world right after the bombs drop in th emiddle of a nuclear winter, whole main quest is gone and whole new one is in it's place. real mind bender story too.
If I recall, if you kill anybody in the Institute, it will spawn two synths to block your exit. If you kill, like, *everybody* in the Institute, when you take the elevator to the teleporter, you will be met with a *packed* room full of synths while you are cornered in your tiny elevator. If you are not well armed, you will get mowed down and overwhelmed almost instantly. This is probably one of the most fun encounters in the game if you got the gear to take them down.
A fun way to play with only vats, is with melee, the blitz perk in combination with the grognak's axe is awesome. It's a medium speed weapon that only uses the AP of a fast weapon. If you manage to get the sneak damage as well, you can clear close quarters super easily. Won't work everywhere, but when it does it's very satisfying.
Reminder that the unofficial patches (at least for Skyrim) tend to break more stuff then it fixes in the games current state. I only use "vats freeze fix" for unofficial patches.
My favorite series are your Oblivion and Fallout challenges (especially New Vegas). This is my second time saying grab a beer at Cheers next time you're in Boston.
If you press ~, it will open the debug console. try toggling collision(tcl) off and back on when you get stuck in a terminal. If not that, try "coc" (center on cell" to teleport to sanctuary or something
Cait came over on the same boat that Moriarty from Fallout 3 fame did. Both are inexplicably Irish and Moriarty is said to have come over as a toddler.
Vats are tons of fun to use. I love making a cowboy with a vats build. Nothing says flavor like using revolvers and vats. Its awesome if you haven't tried it.
All these glitches are going to make for a great short one day. Currently, I'm wondering if there's a problem with the fan patch or if MDBs luck is that bad.

I also had the missing Prydwen issue once. That was because I left Fort Hagen the same way I entered. (Maybe thats what you did, but it's not in the video so idk) You have to exit through the roof and unlock the door there with the terminal, that triggers Prydwen arrival.
"Can you beat Fallout 4 with only VATS?" Also known as: How I normally play Fallout games
This video brought back so many memories for me. I played Fallout 4 so much. It really makes me want to play it again. Thank you MDB!
I was not ready for the father interaction. That almost made me spit out my drink lmao
I’m not gonna act like I know what all is going on in this game, but it’s always great to see you uploading. Hope you are keeping well.
Dude, I love that you make these long. I watch other people and they do over 20 mins at best.
Were all glad to hear your doing better, hope you make a full recovery soon!
Keep a Crit banked, and then just use the bar once it gets filled - especially in longer-range areas like this when your short-mid range weapon has sub-par accuracy, and your long-range weapon... sucks. :P
I love that scene with the Railroad. Honestly, I imagine the secret door is just to keep out raiders and the like. Less "security door" and more "hidden door with a hidden doorknob to keep idiots and bricks-for-brains raiders out." (also given Deacon's personality, it's hard to tell if he's supposed to be serious with that comment.)
I always snipe the guard there in the triggerman's hideout from across the room, no matter what playthrough I'm doing.
Railroad is my least, purely because it's just "The Institute's questline, but with extra steps and the ending chopped off and a new one glued on.")
Minutemen ending is sort of the thing you're supposed to do over the course of the game, I feel.
No, you can't do that in Fallout. The only way 1 projectile can hit two enemies is if you have the perk that does that.
@@HomeCookinMTG I think he's saying use it as a way to hit kellog because he's between you
@@TheRaven752 yeah and I'm saying no.
18:28 The way he read that line makes me think that was a "Space Balls" reference. That and the fact it was for the Mayor.
Me watching this video without knowing anything about fallout except for what you talked about in the other run, but still enjoying it because I love your content
Glad to see you're doing better! I have to admit, there was a hole in my sub feed while you were gone my dude, so I'm glad to see you're back!
@@dogishappy0 I thought you already have those two with a proper layout. Isn't perception and intelligence necessary for those two?
@Zach Twilightwindwaker I like to start the game with those skills at or near max level so I don't need to leave any locks or terminals behind.
I’m doing a VATS focused build right now, and my best friend has been Deliverer (Tommy Whisper’s gun). It’s kitted out right out of the gate with VATS modifications that make it a really powerful tool for this sort of playthrough.
Obligatory meme "You know Dogmeat can wear armor" for the algorithm.
Fun run! Thanks for doing fall out challenges I really love seeing your elation come through when you find something new in this series you love.
Hi MDB,
first of all, I would like to thank you for your great work and videos.
As a recommendation for a challenge:
Have you heard about Coromon? It's a game that is heavily inspired by Pokemon.
I have just started my own playthrough of the game and find it quite refreshing compared to Pokemon.
Your character can talk o.O
It has quite a few built on options (no items in battle, Coromon defeated in battle --> leaves your team, only X heals in a Health Center (Pokemon Center) and some more as well as some quality if life options.
Thanks so much and have a nice day
Rhuun
If you're going to outright kill father in a play though, wait until he unlocks the door to get to the rest of the institute, then go wild with kills and collecting a massive amount of loot, at that point being over incombered isn't really issue as many of the enemy come running to you, and when you leave you'll be at a place you can drop everything off at.
40:56 I think you can fix the brotherhood not showing by going out the got Hagen exit again. I remember doing it once a while ago
40:23
did you not go through the elevator that leads from that basement to the roof?
Always ready for a new mdb fallout video 🙏
A very hard challenge that you could try MDB is "Can I beat Fallout 4 Frost mod?". It would be a multiple part series. Trying to argue otherwise would be fruitless.
Best of luck, MDB.
56:30 That's what I do whenever Shaun asks to join. I'm like "Fuck it, you're not my real son but come along if you want."
This might be my favorite MDB video of all time.
Fallout 2 actually had a Irish character that came from Ireland post apocalypse, meaning that Cait having an Irish accent isn't that strange
I love your videos they make me want to go back and replay these games with different self challenges.
Glad to hear you're doing well :)
For a run suggestion, I think it'd be fun to do either a Rock-It Launcher (Fallout 3) or Junk Jet (Fallout 4) only playthrough :p
Shooting Father dead immediately was legitimately the funniest thing I've seen a while
Regarding people being able to read in Fallout, remember Piper has a written newspaper she successful sells in Diamond city. Most people can still read.
Love your first F4 run, so I’m excited to watch this one too!
12:40 The why is because Bethesda ran out of time so cut a bunch of content around the Combat Zone. It was originally going to be like the Arena in Oblivion and there's still some of that dialogue in the game files.
"Why is it so much of the time that we pick sarcastic we just come across as a bitter jerk?"
Been asking myself that same question my entire life.
I think I use a mod called intelligent or genius savant. It does the opposite of idiot savant where the more intelligent you are the more likely it activates. Giving you the benefit of increased experience from intelligence and the perk bonus.
I love some of these challenges you do, you explore different options I haven't even done, and I'm one known to just lollygag and do dumb things lol!
I love that you play more bethesda games, always happy to watch, hope you're doing well~ 🥰
29:45 Good Ol' "It just works" Bethesda.
if you are going to use any mods I might reccomend the frost mod if you want a really brutal challenge later. not something for now but something to look into. basically takes fallout and puts you in the world right after the bombs drop in th emiddle of a nuclear winter, whole main quest is gone and whole new one is in it's place. real mind bender story too.
Yay, a Fallout 4 video during my Birthday! I love this game.
We need pics of MDB wearing Khimyra merch every time he makes an add break.
OH MY GOD WHEN YOU SAID HEART GOLD I GOT SO HYPED SO QUICKLY IM SO EXCITED
mdb a bit of a pro tip for your next fallout 4 vid in sancuary there is a bombschelter with goldbarrs in it and lots of healling items hope it helps
The confusion of Tommy's logic on the combat zone is the epitome of the issues with fallout 4 lol
"Fallout 4 With Only V.A.T.S"
also known as:
"The Only Way I Play Fallout 4"
"She tells me to follow her...then she gets stuck on a wall."
I love Bethesda games.
"and you made your password your username?"
Me a Security Expert: No.... no that tracks.
25:55 Cait got the door open for me
This playthrough was incredibly cursed, and I don’t think I’ve ever seen a Bethesda game break this much at once, which is saying *a lot.*
Love to see Fallout 4 Melee only. Maybe mix it up with 1 STR and/or have to run to and clear Nuka World right out of the Vault
Yeah i don't use the fan patch and I don't generally have nearly this many glitches
The place where you get cait as a companion is actually cut content but there is a mod (I think) that gives you the full experience.
