Can we take a minute to appreciate how great Gong Yoo's acting skills are since this show was, I believe, his first time playing this type of psychotic villainous role, and he does such an insanely good job that he deserves a supporting actor award or something?
For some reason everyone only thinks this is 2 years later but it's actually 3 years later, everyone forgets he lived in poverty for a year after the games ended then went to the airport and after that scene it said 2 years later.
Well, you explained it yourself. It’s not “for some reason”, it’s because some people forget. It’s not a big deal, plus I haven’t actually seen anyone say they think it’s been 2 years, but either way, like I said, it’s no biggie.
@thatgirlwearingglasses4133 I've actually watched alot of reactions already, I literally have no life and I haven't actually seen anyone who haven't thought it was just 2 years
@yolandag8436 in my opinion there's no time table on the cop that we know of but the facial hair says alot also the regular hair. When it comes to Korean men(I'm not trying to be racist or anything) they grow facial hair alot slower then say someone from the Nordic reigion but his regular hair growth would suggest 3 to 6 months.it also may have taken some time to find the guy who saved him and maybe it also took time before he started spending his weekends looking for a random island in a reigion with thousands of small islands
Gong Yoo's acting left my jaw on the floor. Everyone talks about the game scene but I loved the part where he basically trampled the bread, he looked so psychotic and ughhh sooo good
That final scene where gong yoo is looking into the camera where half of his face has the red light, cover the red side then vice versa and you can see his split personality. Beautifully directed and acted
The way they chose to make the Ddakji guy in the subways even more developed as a character was a pretty cool tone setter. Showing he even did some real odd games for his own enjoyment on the side, walking that line of psychological and physical torment on his free time had me buckled in for the season for sure
I mean I knew from the 1st season that he had to lack empathy and was manipulative but I didn't know he was this sadistic. Fascinating to watch. This first episode was top notch and the scene between Gi-hun and the recruiter is a masterpiece in my opinion. Brilliantly written, acted, directed, and the set design, lighting, and cinematography were superb.
Gosh, I love Gong Yoo. Always had (coffee prince, goblin, busan and the other one in space). He always finds a way to cement it even more, coz he always plays well his roles. Love that actor.
Rock paper scissors minus one has been played in Korea for almost 40 years in Korea and the penalty was giving your opponent a finger smack on the forehead but squid game 2 upgraded with the Russian roulette. Many foreigners may feel it rather new but it has been around Korea for a long time
30:38 This person has double eyelids on one side. Divide the face in half. While it glows red and expresses a psychopathic appearance, the face with double eyelids on the right seems to represent Gong Yoo's kind face in Part 1.
At the moment when the recruiter talked to gi hun about admitting gi hun is the same trash, I realized that this game isn't about live or die. It turned into a lethal duel fought for each other's beliefs. The recruiter has broken soul because of his past, family, what he's done for the squid game. He is a psyco now for sure, and he thinks humans are evil. At the same time, he wants to prove that humans are evil and dumb. Gi hun, on the other hand, is believing in human dignity. He knows that those participants from the last game didn't deserve to die for "VIP"s entertainment just because they were poor and desperate. Gi hun wants to break down the castle and capture the vips to put an end to this sick game. That desire for revenge and anger are all gi hun has left, nothing else. He is going to use the blood money to finish his task. Like this, recruiter and gi hun are both insane but standing in opposite directions. That is why neither of them refused or cheated in Russian roulette. No back off. They both want to prove and uphold their own beliefs. The first episode did a marvelous job of portraying these aspects. I love this drama and this episode. Gong Yu, great job. Kudos.
I remember thinking why do we have to spend way too much time following the 2 loanshark guys--that got too comedic at times--only to realize that this makes the rock paper scissors scenes hit even harder. Love how they use the same loanshark from S1. Knowing how he was on S1, the show really caught me off guard with him sacrificing himself at the end. Good one.
First of, I love that the guy helping him was the same guy who broke his nose first episode lol. Also I was so surprised since Mr Kim immediately played, the way he sacrificed himself for his friend, so well done. I’m all in for this season right now. Thanks for giving this to us mid holidays 😁
The tone of this episode takes a hard left 2/3 of the way through. Lots of fun watching you guys laugh at the mob boss and his buddy while the rest of us know what's about to happen. The acting was so phenomenal.
Some interesting points about this episode: 1) You might not have noticed but the leader of the squad Gi-Hun is working with to find the Recruiter is actually the guy we saw chasing Gi-Hun and threatening him in the restroom at the very beginning of the first season. He mentions here that Gi-Hun voluntarily sought him out to pay off his debt and hire him for this job, and you can see how much their dynamic has changed, and it's clear that he holds a lot of respect for Gi-Hun now. 2) I don't ever recall Gi-Hun seeing the Front Man in the first season. Whenever they interacted, it was via phone, or on the one occasion they were in the same space, Gi-Hun was blindfolded. So it's quite odd that Gi-Hun sees the Front Man in his nightmare. Either it's a continuity error, or the two had an interaction that we never saw on screen.
Could just be some visual shorthand for the audience's sake, rather than Gi-Hun actually knowing what the front man looks like and seeing the front man in his dreams. He could just be seeing some sort of facisimile that his brain conjures, and the audience just sees what we know.
The recruiter was absolutely amazing in this episode but can we talk about how much Gi Hun has changed since the games? It's so clear even in his face. In the first games his ID picture was this sweet smile, now his face is hard and serious.
Gong Yoo deserves an Oscar for this performance alone, what an actor and what a freaking fun show!! Thank you guys for reacting to this, was already patiently waiting 🙏🏽
The Oscars are for films. So he will not get one no matter how brilliant he was in this role. Emmy's are for television series and Golden Globes are for both. So he could get one of those and it would be well deserved.
Now thats how you play Rock Paper Scissors 😂 I actually really liked the Loan Shark Leader. He reeked of being sorta slimy and i expected him to not only take Gi Hun's money but also screw over his right hand man. But not only did he stay true to his word and make his men work for the money they were earning from Gi Hun,but he actually sacrificed his life for his partner. That was definitely a highlight of the season for me. Gong yoo.....give that man an Emmy for a Guest Appearance for this episode. What a performance
See what happens when you get a zombie bite. Gong Yoo was never the same after the Train to Busan. See how insane he became stomping on bread. He could easily hand them out to people experiencing homelessness or menacingly play Rock, Paper, and Scissors with Russian Roulette. Remember, kids, run for your life when there is a zombie outbreak!
I've not seen S2 so it'll be fun ride watching along with you guys! So excited its back! **Rocks Voice FINALLY!** & Quinn's "if we didn't see it, didn't happen" theory being proven right here ^_^ liked his hiding behind the paper impression 18:18 & interesting new concept Gong Yoo did with Bread/Lottery, I think mosy people chose Ticket cause bread only feed them for a day but money could feed them for longer. I've never seen 'Rock Paper, Scissors' played like that before! That & the 'Russian Roulette' game with Gong Yoo/Seong was intense but brilliantly acted, Seong showing NO fear! Great start to season! Well worth the wait! 😁💙❤️💚
Sequels of shows when you think you know the gimmick are hard to create, but this episode pulled it off! Even though we know our protagonist won't kick the bucket, let alone on ep1, the intensity, mystery, and darkness were excellent!
Literally just binged this whole season last night! Surprised you guys are reacting to it this early thought it would be in the next year! You guys are in for a RIDE!!! 😱😎 I won't spoil anything but this series reaction is going to be interesting! 👍👌🤘😎🔥💯
Oak, to answer your question I believe the green tubes you see when recruiter is starting the record are vacuum tubes seen on specific types of amps used with turntables. No poison there haha.
I don't know if I missed something but I was so confused as to why they referred to the police officers chief as his dad? I thought it was just his boss no?
I've been listening closely and I'm pretty sure Gi-hun is pronounced with a hard g (like in grape or gorilla.) I know it doesn't follow English pronunciation rules, but in Korean most Gs are hard sounds and can be interchanged or melded with the K sound.
They are called scratchers here in the US too lol. While kinda short, this season is so good. Just leaves chances of more episodes for season 3 next year.

@MrHimself98 it hasn't, that's my assumption based off the editing
The way they chose to make the Ddakji guy in the subways even more developed as a character was a pretty cool tone setter.

Pretty sure the recruiter must have been a winner of Squid Games. He comes across sadistic enough to win it.
I actually think it's more compelling that he's not a winner. He's doing it purely for the love of the game and the rush that comes with power.
