To be fair, in season 1, we all suspected the old man, and also predicted that Sang-woo was gonna betray sooner or later. I think it's safe to say that for people who have watched a lot of kdramas, both seasons had predictable aspects and twists that surprised us. For example in season 2, soldier 011 was a pleasant surprise.

Because the way I perceived it was that each player holds 100 million, meaning they each start the game with 100 million in the bag, which is the value they hold in the game. With each participant dying, the eliminated ones are just contributing to the 100 million each surviving participant initially holds. And since there will only be one winner in the end, the 455 dead participants give all their share to the winner, making the total prize money 45.6 billion. So it's correct that the winner gets the share that they hold as well. Think of it this way, if you start a game having zero value to yourself, does it sound tempting? Giving you the idea that when you win, you're winning everyone's share PLUS your own share that you've earned definitely sounds more tempting to me. That's just my two cents. Also not to forget, they don't want participants getting the idea that only one person gets to survive and be the winner. That would make less people eager to stay in the game. Making the prize money 45.5 billion would be a major hint to that.

My answer to the last question was always that it symbolizes the cost of winning the game. You gave up your humanity to win (or alternatively you lost your innocence... which is a symbol that is used a lot, what with the kids games and all) and so your money goes in the pot as well. Its a metaphor so its probably a creative freedom for the subtext rather than the realistic narrative. It could also be seen as an omen (or foreshadowing) that you're not gonna escape the games with the money, eventually you'll come back and die....

My answer to the last question was always that it symbolizes the cost of winning the game. You gave up your humanity to win (or alternatively you lost your innocence... which is a symbol that is used a lot, what with the kids games and all) and so your money goes in the pot as well. Its a metaphor so its probably a creative freedom for the subtext rather than the realistic narrative. It could also be seen as an omen (or foreshadowing) that you're not gonna escape the games with the money, eventually you'll come back and die....
