Having suffered with some serious depression these past two weeks, probably the worst I've felt in my life, I just randomly stumbled on this today and was completely captivated. Depression is a weird one, and is very hard to explain/understand, but the lack of joy in anything is a big part of it. The fact the I could be captivated by something like this, is genuinely that turning point to know, that things can get better and you can be interested/enjoy something. That's all you need, just one spark of enjoyment and you can get better. This came at such a perfect time, thank you.

@@mc2554 Thanks man. Things are picking up, making some healthy changes and they seem to be doing something. Learning to put less pressure on myself has been the hardest thing and trying to handle the overwhelm of life is very complicated, but I’m getting there. Getting out in nature does wonders.
I hope you’re doing okay too. I’ll certainly watch that episode, thanks for the recommendation.

the intense resonance i've felt in this episode is intensely fulfilling. Emotionally, mentally and spiritually. This pod has helped to humanise the pathway of an entrepreneur and actually sure's up my belief in my potential to create a scalable business. From the hospitalisation, the grief, the plant medicines to the similar character traits, motivations and world views ... QUALITY!

In relation to around 37:30 about cutting off things/people that you're no longer aligned with is something I've massively improved on this year (lockdown especially).
Literally turned my life around and despite current events, I've been able to turn everything into a positive. Going from 23 stone to about 17 this year. Friendship groups, relationships, learning and meditating and going to start Muay Thai.
Sometimes we all just get caught up with the "hustle" of everything and forget to find time to actually focus and grow ourselves as people rather than just our career or chasing a new car or new shoes.

    • @JamesMcManusMrJamesMcManus
      @JamesMcManusMrJamesMcManus 4 роки тому +2

Just finished the episode. And wow, made me realise a lot and learn some things about myself and what I'm currently doing. It's so so easy to get caught up in work, especially when still working from home but finding that time and actually setting yourself deadlines and setting time away to do things you enjoy can really develop you as a person.
When I first got into marketing and social media I was very quickly sucked in by the whole hustle porn facade and even found myself preaching it to some people.
It glorifies working late hours, not taking time for yourself and not spending any money that you've earned. I get that this isn't they want to promote, but it comes across that way.
Everyone is different. If you've got a new job and you feel happy... Celebrate, buy a new car if you want to and can afford it. Buy the new trainers that you want. There's nothing wrong with that at all, just don't go too far the other way and get sucked into buying things to impress people that you don't even like.
      Everything in moderation.

I see what you mean-thinking about your purpose and focusing on growth can be really powerful. But I also think not everyone is always in that place. Sometimes, life isn’t about reflecting to grow-it’s just about being present, enjoying the moment, and letting things be as they are.
For me, reflecting on purpose doesn’t always have to lead to change or growth. Sometimes, it just helps you appreciate where you are and find peace in the now. Growth is important, but so is just living and being content with the present.

I found this episode after a I saw a random screenshot of Stevens twitter post.
It made so much sense and I started reading through his timeline and stumbled on a comment about how life-changing this conversation was.
For me, it's been the most brutally honest, non-narcissist interview I ever heard. Great to know there're people just like me who suffer intense imposter syndrome and anxiety. Also embracing your eccentricity and non-conformism.
I've learned firsthand about failing and retrying, finding purpose, increasing self-worth through personal development and mentions of several worthwhile audiobooks I'll be purchasing.
    Thank you so much

I have just finished listening to this podcast as I am starting my own business but I have struggled to nail down exactly what this/what it should look beyond "consulting". I realised my problem is, that I have two businesses that I am almost trying to merge into one.
When Dan said when he and his business partner went to see a business psychologist to understand the problems in his old company, then went on to talk about Heights now being a value-based company I stopped what I was doing immediately, I knew I had found my business. I am a Business Psychologist my dissertation, passionate and drive are all-around values. Values are the smallest part of a culture, they are what drives our behaviour and what makes us feel uncomfortable when we act in a way that breaches our values.
So from this Podcast I have realised I could help starts up understanding what their values are and how they can use them to drive their businesses in the direction they want, and not get lost in the noise and in amongst the shiny new "trends" that divert our attention. The second is coaching individuals on how to use your values to help you understand imposture syndrome, burnout and what you truly want to life and a career.
Would love to hear your thoughts.
    Megan

This was fenomenal to listen to even 3 years after it's release. I loved how the guest described relationship building, espetially because it really was the way I approached my last one (although it didn't survive, it was really the best so far). This podcast has helped me grow and keep my curiosity satisfied regularly, and helped me in all other different ways so much so far... Thank you all for creating such a space! ❤ For the camera guy: you killed it in the best way possible - I loved the shots made from the cieling lamp, and the shot of the diary at the end, you kind of ditched that at some point (as the years passed) but it is such a great visual effect, it really touches the soul on some deeper level! 👏👏👏

I must say as a Christian and someone who wholeheartedly believes in God, it was interesting even to myself to have listened to especially the bits about religion and not be affected by it. I don't think anything could shift my belief in God, however both your beliefs and perspectives were understood and respected.

So much to take away from this episode. Love the point on learning and teaching. When there’s so much to learn, how not to make that an overwhelming experience to absorb. The perfectionist in me wants to retain it all but even just taking away a few points and working on those would result in growth. Treating other parts of life to the same depth of planning as a business is definitely the one I will be focussing on. I also found it so interesting to understand burnout from the view of under-fulfilment rather than physical/mental exhaustion. Thanks for speaking so honestly on this.

Okay so, I really like this podcast and felt I could relate to both of their life views through this on relationships, health, work ethic except the fear of death subject. I understand their viewpoints but I am yet to hear from someone in media discussing death but not from the influence of religion or spirituality but from the scientific minds who find it difficult to see something beyond death (and not in the smug physicist way). The fear of death comes from a place of understanding the broadness of space and time and realising how special it is that you exist in this point in time and anyone else who is alive at the same point in time shares a special place in time together. This isn’t illogical, it’s also an emotionally intelligent and an awareness of nature view point. Feeling an overwhelming respect for your short existence drives you to make your life valuable and not waste. It drives learning, health and love. Yes it’s related to the fear of not living your life but it isn’t illogical or irrational.
    Yours sincerely,
    A triggered listener 😂🙈✌️

Burnout is worse when you’re stuck doing what you don’t like. The solution? Know your purpose. Reflect on what’s important:
Now: What brings you meaning today?
Near future: What goals matter in the next 6 months?
Far future: What legacy do you want in 5, or even 200 years?
With purpose, you can navigate burnout-and make space for what you truly love.

Loved his comment on the rain, I often walk in the rain not by choice but recently instead of loathing it I’ve learnt to love it and enjoy the rain falling onto my face & body. Just, as he said, enjoying the elements which is quite freeing, I allow myself to be thoughtless for a moment which can be liberating 🤍☁️

25:00 of the video was really important for me to hear, my biggest insecurity (putting myself out there online) could be my biggest opportunity. I was lucky enough to be a Virgin Startup Ambassador when I launched my first company and I loved public speaking and helping people when I could. But since that chapter in my life, I've found it almost impossible to build my personal brand online and define how I want to put myself out there. Great insights Steven and Dan!

Interesting listening to someone who’s in touch with a new way of thinking, talking about Marcus Aurelius. My grandfather a mathematician recommended stoic philosophers as something I should be reading but I disregarded it as out dated. But what I think I can take from this is that perspective is subjective but understanding more perspectives is Knowledge and knowledge is power. Great podcast again

This was very interesting. Excellent information. Personally however, I found it difficult to get past his relationship information. In some ways he showed full and beautiful commitment to his marriage and yet somehow, somewhere commitment to being faithful was lost. In my experience being "faithful and true" is an intrisic part of a loving marriage. I couldn't get past that.

Sadly the problem is many people who are suffering with their mental health issues are not getting access to nutritionists or other alternative therapies which could help them. Also many doctors who believe in nutrition for health seem to think it is better to just eat healthily than rely on supplements other than very specific ones or be tested to know what you maybe deficient in.It can be very expensive and unnecessary to take supplements if your body does not need it..its really better to get tested.

Such an eyeopening and insightful episode worth to listen many times this week. I started realizing a lot of those elements since I made redundant and how important is personal focus and growth. Whilst searching for these answers I have understood how important is a break as I "hustle" these 3 months to find a new role. As a person with a lack of confidence which comes from imposter syndrome that I encounter it daily, in job interviews and even to as you said the relationships, what tips would you recommend to cope with it?
    Thanks for sharing these stories!
P.s: I hope one day to be able to meet you in person or even work with you to learn more about your philosophy.

Hi Steven, late to the diary of a ceo. I “discovered you “ by accident. By this I mean I came across your conversation with Gary Neville, which was super informative and different . I am a “red” a mancunian who lives in Cheshire 😊. I enjoyed that YT immensely, loved the banter, business conversations and course reminiscing of his career. It was different in a good way . I have today been captivated by the conversation with Daniel, engaging and inspiring, tad lack of judgment in that he supports the “ Gunners” but otherwise I genuine person wanting to contribute positively to our world. I look forward to “ playing catch up” and hopefully enjoying 3 points today away at Elland Road k/r John D

This episode has lots of topics, so interesting! When you understand that everything you do is for you, you automatically forget about what people are going to say, thing or say about you! ;) So do what you want without caring about them! Why caring about others' thoughts if ours are the most important? So who cares! At the end IS YOUR LIFE! Social Media is SO addictive and at the same time toxic that we need to learn to live with it and try to be affected the less we can, ideally not affected.
From failure we learn. Sometimes is necessary and is part of the process, definitely something better is coming soon! ; ) So never give up and never lose hope is key, it’s always about believing in yourself no matter what … you are responsible to be the best artist of your life.

So much amazing content in this interview. Thanks so much guys. I think it is so hard to find value adding content from success people, who provide practical advice so this is gold! I would like to hear your thoughts about how to get started. I feel that most people (myself included) over analyse all the possible things that could go wrong with a business idea before even starting which means ideas never get off the ground. So any content around getting started or 'analysis paralysis' would be great. Thanks again!
