    You know that episode of Seinfeld called “The Barber”, where George is hired to work on the “Pensky File”? George has no idea what that file contains, or what he's supposed to do with it. I think that sums up this UA-cam channel! I don't have a dedicated format or specific focus, but I try to cover a general swath of gaming and entertainment topics.
    Thanks for watching!

    Clay's Cockroach story was hilarious.
    I really like The Search for Spock. The shot of the crew on Genesis looking at the Enterprise go down is one of my favourites in the entirety of Trek. In WOK Spock gave his life for the Enterprise and now the Enterprise returns the favour.

    This is my favourite movie. Watched this when I was a kid, the atmosphere, the soundtrack, the tone, its so dark I love it. The designs are amazing too. Nothing is overdone. Its the perfect balance of spectacle and storytelling. Performances in this is amazing too you can feel how grounded all the characters are in this. This will always be in my top 5 best movies ever :)

    I love this film and think it's underrated. I love pieces of stealing the enterprise, the battle of Genesis and the saddles of losing ol 1701. That said, it is a love note to Tru fans and not a general action flick. It odd how Christie Alley thought ST2 could get her millions of dollars and hence her change. A good middle piece of the trilogy.

    One thing I would point out, is this the first Star Trek movie that had *truly new* and differently designed ships.
    The ship Reliant in Star Trek II was pretty much just a kitbash. This one had to completely new Federation ships that didn't use any parts at all for the Enterprise, The Excelsior and the Grissom, plus an all new Klingon design they didn't even really need to make since they already had a wonderfully detailed model of the Klingon battle cruiser to use but the bird of prey was so great with articulating wings that I'm glad that they did!
    And in a time when models had to be made physically and detailed to hold up to close up scrutiny, I really appreciate it at the time having three completely new an unrelated to previous designs to appreciate.
    And that doesn't include the incredibly impressive space stock. They really opened up and widened the universe of track in this movie, showing many different kinds of ships in different fleets and huge space stations rather than just the dry dock wireframe that have been used before and since.
    I remember the Excelsior blowing me away when I first saw it and hoping that would be their new ship and was disappointed when they were just given another version of the same Enterprise, I thought the Excelsior was, although 80s style, the most fantastic Sleek design that ever come out of Star Trek.
    Eventually they messed up the design for Generations but that's another comment section!

    Great analysis, guys! I enjoy much of TSFS (the theft of the Enterprise, and its subsequent destruction - as a fan who grew up with Trek, and was fourteen years old when this hit theaters, I can't express how upsetting it was to see the Enterprise go. If course, as you pointed out, they go through the ships like disposable shaving razors these days)
    HOWEVER, what bothers me the most about this film is how it dismantles all the hard-earned character development that Kirk experienced in Star Trek II. The character grew to accept loss and his own limitations, and in this movie he is back to obsessively beating the odds at all costs. It's a huge step backward for the character and what really disappoints me about this story.
    Keep up the great work!

    I love The Search for Spock, even not too bothered about the low production values of the Genesis Planet. This film is the second part of an awesome triolgy. It's great to me

    You guys are cold. Nailed alot of the tone, but really missed the enrichment of the disgardment of the military protocol for friendship. Now we are really hanging out in their basement away from rules and regulation and going out of the way to help a friend. This made ST4 possible and TNG take on that similar tone of character development.

    Guys, thank you so much for all the Star Trek podcasts. Really interesting and engaging and my favorite so far was 'The Motion Picture' discussion. It was the release of 'The Final Frontier' that resulted in 'The Search For Spock' getting identified as part of a pattern. People drew a straight line between 'TMP and 'TFF' with 'TSFS' getting caught in the middle. Before that the film was considered a fairly respectable effort but unremarkable.. Personally, at the time I was loosing hope with each film that Goldsmith would ever return. I did really like the expansion of the ship hardware( Grisom, Excelsior, the bird of prey, Spacedock). At least there's more than one Federation ship in Earth orbit.

    It's probably just nostalgic bias, because this was my 1st VHS ever as a kid.
    But this one is my favorite Trek movie. It's not the best one, but it's my favorite.

    I remember watching this on VHS back in the 80s. My mom made a big pot of pasta with shells. I was grossed out because it reminded me of the mutated microbes on Spock's torpedo coffin. To this day I still think of Kruge squishing that microbe worm mutant thing with his bare hand when I eat pasta shells in tomato based sauce.

    I really enjoy your old podcasts, even if (like on this occasion) I don't necessarily share your views. I still think TSFS is the most underrated Star Trek film. I think it stands up really well, with some great set pieces, Shatner and DeForest Kelly on top form, Christopher Lloyd giving a great big all in performance, more beautiful James Horner music, ILM on top of their game with the special effects, and it zips along at a good pace. A very solid 4 out of 5 and a film I still enjoy revisiting it every so often.

    How can anyone comment on this film without mentioning the stealing of the enterprise, the confrontation with the Klingon ship, the death of David, the self-destruct sequence and the resurrection of Spock at the end? These are such moving scenes and really make the Search for Spock a memorable film. Yes, it is not as well-constructed or thematically rich as Wrath of Khan. It's a simpler, more straightforward film. But it's still better than most.

    I've rewatched this a couple times in recent years, especially since being released in HD, and really appreciate it, so I've found myself asking "why is this supposed to be bad?" I like the point that it's not bad, it's just underwhelming compared to Wrath of Kahn, so it's hard to compare. I think it holds up a lot better than The Voyage Home, which might have been good at the time, but now comes off as seriously dated and whimsically campy.

    • @thepenskyfile
      @thepenskyfile  6 років тому +1

      I love Voyage! It's the first movie to try to have some fun.

    • @TorquilMcLeod
      @TorquilMcLeod 6 років тому

      It does have fun, and I liked that comment Clay made in that other review about how it's the only Star Trek movie you'd watch with your Mom. I found in the early 2000s, around the time it was released on DVD, that it was harder to watch because of how dated it felt, but now it would have that retro 80s thing going for it, so is probably worth revisiting.

    • @robertsleeth861
      @robertsleeth861 5 років тому

      I never thought I'd find someone that thought the same way about Voyage. I saw Voyage in the theater when it came out and didn't like it at all. The trip back to the '80s does make it look dated. I thought there was too much humor and "saving the whales" storyline a little silly. I understand the environmental message but still silly. The score didn't feel like Star Trek at all. I thought everyone seemed out of character compared to the 2 previous movies. No starship battles and you see the new Enterprise for about 10 seconds. I actually prefer FF over this as bad as that one is but at least FF has some of the best Kirk, Spock, McCoy moments in the all the movies.

    George Takei was to become Captian Sulu in Star Trek 2 and command the Excelsior, But Bill Shatner would not have it.
    It the book version of star Trek 2 and 3, Sulu has been promoted.

    I would give this movie a 2 out of 5. Except for Wrath of Khan, the Star Trek movies are not great in general, and this one is no exception. And I am coming from the POV that when these movies came out, especially the first two, they were among my favorite moves of all time. Keep in mind, I was 14 then so there is that. And by the time this movie came out, I was 18 or 19 and kind of over Star Trek, so there is that.
    IMO, Nimoy's inexperience as a director shows. I don't know how he spent his money making this movie but it feels cheap for a big budget sci fi movie of this era.
    It is silly that they come up with a plot device tor Kirk and the bridge crew plus Scotty to run the Enterprise with just 5 or 6 people. If that were the case, why are they bothering to have a crew of 400? I would think that if you can do it with 5 people, you might need 50 at most, and that includes a relief crew so the regular crew could sleep once in awhile, repair teams, and science people for, doing science type stuff.
    You are also so right about the look of sci fi somehow always looking like the era the movie was made. All those original series moves except the first one look like the 1980s. And not limited to Star Trek. Go check out Logan's Run, which looks like the future is a 70s era shopping mall.

      @Blue Skeptic Yep, Spock's Brain is at least funny enough that you could watch it multiple times. I saw And the Children Shall Lead once and I doubt I'd watch it again (even the novelisation is an improvement on that episode, thought not enough to save it)

    I wanted to like this more than I actually did. Perhaps because it followed "The Wrath of Khan" this always seems kind of lacklustre to me. I didn't get why the Klingons were speaking in two languages and Klingon wasn't subtitled. And what the hell is wrong with Starfleet security? Why are Klingon Commanders addressed as "my lord"? I enjoyed McCoy with Yoda's kinsman in the bar, and Uhura and Mr Adventure are always fun. But Kruge isn't even named and I don't get his motivation for wanting Genesis at all!
    Ker-plunk, Clay? I was thinking Kal-toh!
    It's very fantasy isn't it? when I watched Kirk kick Kruge into the lava I inwardly shouted _"Precious!"_
    No one has any real character, with the possible exception of Sarek, and I think that's the biggest problem.
    Yeah, yeah, David dies, no surprises. His other purpose is to tell Saavik that the planet was created with proto-matter.
    Saavik and adolescent Spock get it on, I was thinking "so what?" to be honest.
    And Spock is resurrected and I thought "Yeah, but we _knew_ that was gonna happen anyway"
    Also, Archer wandering the Vulcan desert with Suraks' katra in his head is fresh in my memory.
    I've seen a review of this film on IMDB entitled "The Search For Script" which made me smile more than anything I actually watched onscreen.
    True story: I saw this film when it was first released in my country with a group of people all in Star Trek uniforms - except for the bloke wearing the Spock T-shirt - I had not even seen "The Wrath of Khan" at that point. I was so uncomfortable in this group that I pulled my hoodie down over my face during the group photo, which I still have.
    I remember very little of the actual film, but there were Klingons in the foyer of the theatre.
    I'm guessing this was in December 1984, I was twenty years old, then.
    There are no surprises in this film, nothing really touches me, and I think that's why it fails.
    (Just my opinion) Three from me, Wes. Though I think I'm being generous.
    "And don't call me Tiny!"

      Cardinal Doomsday About the English/Klingon thing. That was done because the filmmakers had the idea that most Klingons didn't speak English, specifically subordinates. They would have to rely on a universal translator to talk to a human or English speaking aliens. It was suggested that Klingon commanders and higher ups learned to speak and understand English without the use of the UT and would use it as a way to keep certain things from the troops. They could regulate their own UT's so the lower crew wouldn't understand. I believe this comes from the novelization. If you notice Kruge only speaks in English to his two highest ranking officers. It's only when he addresses the lower crewmen that he uses Klingon. This idea was reinforced in ST VI. When Gorkon beams aboard the Enterprise he speaks to Kirk in English without having to use the UT (discussed in the novelization I believe). When they exit the transporter room to go to dinner the two Enterprise crewmen, Sanyo and Burke I think, start making prejudiced remarks and one of them had part of a line that says "You know only top of the line models can even talk." This was supposed to be a reference to that idea. Hopefully that makes more sense as to why they keep changing between the two.

    I was in college in 1984 when this movie came out...and this was where Star Trek started to lose me as a franchise. Up till now, through 79 episodes and through two movies, Star Trek was, by and large, about Starfleet. Granted the show and the movies focused on the Enterprise and its crew, but the TV Show was about the voyages of the Starship Enterprise. Starting with Star Trek III, where the Starship Enterprise was destroyed, the movie franchise became more about Kirk, Spock and McCoy and less about "space: the final frontier" and I didn't like it.
    Compare the crew's almost campy behavior in this movie to how dedicated and serious they behaved in Balance of Terror, or The Corbomite Maneuver.
    It left a bad taste in my mouth that didn't wash out until TNG's third season got going around 1989.
