- A review of a genuine Isuzu OEM Oil Catch Can - a.k.a. PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) Oil Separator. A good, high quality Oil Catch Can and possibly a better alternative that what is currently available in the aftermarket.
Isuzu Part Numbers:
8-97324682-1 - SEPARATOR; OIL/PCV

What is an Oil Catch Can and do you need one for your engine?
Oil Catch Cans (PCV Oil Separators) are essential for modern common rail direct injection diesel and even some gasoline engines running an EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) systems. PCV or blow-by gases are the additional gases produced by an internal combustion engine during the compression and combustion strokes. Some unburnt & exhaust gases escape past the piston rings and into the crankcase. These gases then have to be vented in order for the pressure in the crankcase to be relieved otherwise they can be known to damage gaskets and seals. In older style engines, the blow-by was just simply vented to atmosphere. However, this changed due to emission regulations. (Blow-by gases typically consist of: water, unburnt fuel, engine oil, exhaust gas and more harmful pollutants.) Today, the blow-by gasses are simply directed back into the air intake of the engine (usually just before the turbocharger). This allows the blow-by gases to be burnt off during combustion. However, with the ever tightening emission regulations, most modern diesel engines are fitted with EGR systems which recirculates some of the exhaust gasses back into the air intake. This then mixes with the blow-by gases and will start to coat the turbocharger, intercooler, air intake manifold, head and valves with oily mist residue. This will then harden (carbonise) and cake over time. Eventually, the carbon will build up that much the engine will suffocate (due to lack of fresh air) compromising performance, fuel economy and longevity.
A good quality Oil Catch Can simply filters (separates) the oily mist from the blow-by before it enters the air intake. This prevents or reduces the likeliness of carbon building up in the engine air intake. An Oil Catch Can is an inexpensive, preventative means to extend the life of your engine.
Beware of cheap Oil Catch Cans. There are only a few good quality catch cans available on the market of which this is one of them.
After watching your video I bought one from the isuzu trucks part dealer and I fitted it up in my 2011 dmax
Hi Bro. May I ask from where did you bought it? Appreciate to share. Planning to buy.. Thanks and God bless
Bought and fitted to my mux. Bought from my local isuzu truck parts store.
Where did you buy all your hose fittings? What sizes were needed mate? Cheers
Jonathan Pace fittings from bunnings mate irrigation poly fittings 19x25 mm elbow. The hoses you need are 25 mm connects to catch can. And 16 mm connects to engine pcv. I just forced the 16 mm hose to fit the 19 mm fittings.
@@lfl025 cheers mate! Much appreciated!
@Jonathan Pace no worries mate!
@@lfl025 hey mate! What year mux do you have? I have a 2015 dmax and struggling to find where to fit it! Have to make a bracket unfortunately i think!
Its very interesting. I went into Isuzu ute the other day interested in possibly buying one. I asked if they offered an optional catch can system. They said no and its not recommended as it would give them a reason to void warranty.
I said well ive found a genuine isuzu catch can part that is sold.
He looked surprised and said oh i wasnt aware of that, but no its not on the options list.
I have fitted this to my 2021 BT50, I'd like to add to the description that it has internal pressure relief valve and appears to be much better build and design than the Provent 200 I have just removed from the same car. Paid $160 from Isuzu truck spares
What did you do about a bracket
Any chance you can put a picture up of how you mounted it? Thanks 👍
Hey we have this on our 2018 Triton and it works great!
Fantastic clear easy to understand video, thankyou!
Great to hear!
Fitted this to my 2016 colorado with a bit of 25mm hose and 19mm hose a 25/19 hose reducer from bunnings and a couple of 25mm elbows (Bunnings) you can source the filter from ryco fo r $20
Where did you mount it?
i have had one of these on my mux had to make up brackets and hoses seems to work fine ,i tow a lot so it seems that the filter gets very wet with oil .i read about it here a couple of years ago great job on the research
Good to know!
Just need to know for sure if the bottom fitting is the inlet and the top is the outlet
I don't want to make a mistake
Brian
As per the video, it may seem counter intuitive but video is correct.
Nice info sir. I hope our dealer hear in our country can order that item. Thank you very much sir
You are very welcome!
Does this have a pressure relief valve?????
NJS instructional
Hi there
From Australia QLD
I have got one of these from a mechanic mate of mine
He works at ISUZU trucks
Just wanted to know how good are these oil catch cans.
mechanic mate reckons they are better than provent and other brands because they are made from Japan. I also get the filters off him for free aswell whenever I need them.
I've got a ford ranger 2009 pk model
I've had to make a custom bracket for it to fit. First I thought the top hose on can was the inlet for the pcv, and outlet hose down below.
I noticed my catch can would smoke more when i open the lid and the hoses would get really hot lol. I also noticed my fuel going down quicker aswell
So i searched up a video and found yours. You pointed out the bottom hose is the inlet pcv lol and the top is outlet to the maf hose to turbo. I then ask my mechanic and said same thing as your video , he just forgot to mention it to me lol haha
so i switched it over like your video and car is running better and hoses on inlet and outlet aren't as hot.
Thanks heaps for your video.
I have had the filter on for a month no
What are your thoughts on this filter?
Hi Rose, I'm glad to hear and thank you for the positive feedback. Yes the inlet and outlet piping seems a bit odd but makes sense when you think through the design... they are definitely a high quality product and I do recommend them over the aftermarket units. Cheers.
Hey NJS
I've had it on the 4wd for maybe 2 to 3 months now
opened up the filter, theirs a bit of oil under the top lid
when do you think oil will drain down .
I have a valve tap at the end down to chassis , but notice no oil in it
Does it just require more driving around for more Ks
What do you think ??
but I notice my car seems to be breathing much better
@@peterkellam250 Hi Peter, I can confirm that the inlet pipe is the lower port and the return pipe is the upper port. Reason is, if the catch can fills with oil and it isn't drained, the oil is not sucked back into the engine, hence why the port is higher up. Cheers
it's has been 2 years and i still haven't see you install to your car
Drain versus return to sump. Too many contaminants including moisture in what is separated off, you don't want to send that back into your oil. Drain with tap and drain every 4 or 5 thousand ks.
nice review
thanks for the info
Legend mate I’m about to buy thankyou👍
No problem 👍
@@NJSInstructional b.t.w i did see a provent catch can it had a sort of blow off valve (to prevent seals being damaged bu excess pressure) what do you think?
Once you install ib to your rig. Can you show as please thank you
Many thanks for this! Sensibly priced filters, not like Provent or Ryco. Can the inlet / outlet orientation be changed or are they fixed in one position?
Thank you. Yes, they are fixed positions...
GREAT IDEAL
HOPE FIT ISUZU 300NPS TRUCK
THANK YOU FOR SHARE THIS
It's standard on some Isuzu trucks fitted with a 4j engine.
Did anyone source a ready made mounting bracket if so where from
Hi there. Awesome video, very helpful.
I'm about to order one from my isuzu dealer in South Africa. Over here no one is that familiar with catch cans. The agent says it will not work on the muX as it is for the bigger trucks. From your video I believe you say it will be fine though. Can you maybe confirm from your experience? I understand I will just need to make a bracket and work the piping.
Thanks again
Hi, did you buy this, I'm also from south Africa. If you did how much did you purchase it for?
Hi
I did buy it about a year ago. From Westvaal menylyn it was R1600ish if I remember correctly.
It's a bit of a pain to install. You'll need to make a bracket to mount it and the pipe in and out angles are a pain.
But it is definitely possible and once installed it works very well. I drained almost 200ml ot of it after about 10k km.
Sorry to bother you with this but do you think this same unit would function properly on a 3.8 liter Turbo diesel engine or is my engine too big for this device?
Hi I have found out that this catch can is for Isuzu trucks with the 4jj1 engine. I tried our parts department and thats how I found it's a truck part. In saying this there are none in the country and Im waiting on an email back on when they will be. About $100
Thanks for that, very informative. I have an Isuzu MU-X and will heading down to the dealer to get one. Do you happen to know if it is a standard fit or I need to make up brackets? thanks again.
Hi Shane, you will need to make up a custom bracket.
@@NJSInstructional Thanks again
Can we use this on Toyota's with 1GD-FTV engine? Planning to use this on Toyota Innova 2.8 from the Philippines.
Im.also looking for the.parts the.spare.filter.only coz the one I have is not useable.at all.but I cant found the parts here in my country
Great video, thanks for sharing. I would like to fit one to my jeep as the filters are a lot cheaper then the Provent & Ryco, even though the Provent and Ryco style are 40k km duty, assuming engine in good condition. What capacity engine would this suit? Ive seen the Provent advertised for $350.
Thanks Albert, this unit will work with engines up to 5.2L maybe even bigger.
@@NJSInstructional Thanks NJ, Im thinking there are no safety valves with this type. The ryco and pro have 2 each.
If we delete/blanking the EGR, we dont need this?
I don't recommend blanking the EGR...
@@NJSInstructional why not? good for car owner bad for environment?
Can these be purchased online ? Nearest isuzu truck parts dealer is hundreds of kms from me
Hello mate did you end up installing this?
Will it fit my old trooper ?
hi. please i need a video. how can i install it in my Vehicle. because here in Saudi Arabia we don't have this part. so i will order it online. i have ISUZU MU-X 2020. 4JJ1-TC Hi-Power 3.0 litre engine.
Did you end up mounting this? Do you have any pictures of the mounting?
Thanks
@@jerusalemgilbert2148 unfortunately not.
Thanks for that
Cheers
What is the part number sir?
Hi, I have added the part numbers in the description. Cheers.
Do you oil catch can for Isuzu 6uz1
Whats the part number for the catch can and replacement filter?
Hi Michael, they are shown in the video on the box labels. Cheers
@@NJSInstructional thanks so much
G'day 👍
So there's no pressure relief valve ?
Correct, no pressure relief. Keep in mind, when this is plumbed into the turbo there is a negative pressure (vacuum) in the PCV outline line. Therefore, there is no need for an over pressure relief. In fact, an over pressure relief valve can allow for water to enter in during cooling esp. sudden cooling eg. During a river crossing.
@@NJSInstructional
Thanks heaps 👍
Hopefully it'll suit a 2018 Isuzu D Max.
Can anyone tell me where to get these parts?
I'm in the US and none of my truck dealers have these numbers in their systems.
I got mine,bought it online..
Ilocos Pride had to order mine from Malaysia, part number not good in US but I got it and plenty of filters. Apparently this part is only available in Australia and far east from Isuzu. Go figure
Hi will this fit into an Mux if so where and I have looked on line but can’t find them in Australian thanks
go to ali baba
I'm in India and the Isuzu truck parts doesn't have it either:-(
Anyone fitted one of these to a 4jg2 (old 3.1) that come out on the troopers, bighorns and Mu?
Which Isuzu engine is this for?
Isuzu 4HK1
@@NJSInstructional can this be used on a small displacement engine like an isuzu dmax rz4e 1.9L?
Hi there mate, what website did you source this from please. I tried the izuzu sites and had zero luck
You have to source from an Isuzu Trucks and Parts dealership.
Anyone use this on a 1hdt or 1hz Land Cruiser motor?
