@loadsofbuts You can easily see it: -Muslim Empire now controls most of the ways East. And trade from the East is vital to your economy. The Muslims are enemies because the entire crusade thing. -the Ottoman Empire was expanding rapidly so it was common sense they would continue to do so. Which would lead inevitably to confrontation with the West.
@@IslamBenfifi Yeah, the Venetians didn’t cry over their lost trade opportunities for long, the Ottomans’ money was just as good as the Byzantines’, if not better.
Well, they shouldn't have sacked Constantinople in 1204 in the 4th Crusade and fragmented Byzantium thus eventually paving the way for the Turks to rise and take over the area.
We always laugh about the holy roman empire not being anything of what their name suggest, but what the hell were the russians thinking by claiming the title of third rome
@@youneskasdi Like, several reasons. 1. Russia claimed the title of "Thrid Rome" mostly for the religious reasons, not political, this is why they never took the name officialy, unlike HRE. 2. Vasiliy's son got married to the niece of last Byzantium Emperor, Constantin the 11th, thus making Rurik and Palaeologus dynaties to be raltives. 3. They simply wanted to poke Emperor, by saying something like "look, we are equals to you, you claim to inheret West, we claim to inheret East of Rome. Btw, poits 2 and 3 are also the reasons why Russia has eagle with two heads as their coat of arms.
Well members of the Byzantine royal family married into the royalty of Moscow so technically Moscow then Russia could be considered the third Rome and when Russia fell to communism and Finland being the only part not communist then technically Finland is the true heir to Rome

The strategy of Ottomans, on the other hand, should be greatly appreciated: Instead of conquering the city (which was extremely well protected by high wall and seawater) directly, Ottomans had purposely occupied most of the original territories of the Empire first and the Empire thus became much weaker before the final war in 1453. Since the Empire had lost control of most trade routes in Argean Sea either, the 'Romans' eventually lacked any financial and material supports outside the city during the time of siege. The victory of Ottomans was then just a matter of time.
Yea well if the Venetians hadn't just sat their fleet in the Aegean twiddling their thumbs, then Constantinople wouldn't have fallen in the first place.
“Hey the Turks took Constantinople!” “Should we start a crusade to get it back?” “No, sounds like a lot of work. We’ll just send our thoughts and prayers.”
@@ethank5059 They did. But it took them long enough just to retake the city, and they lost mosy of their other territory. It's something extremely hard to recover from. It took the miracle of both the mongols and timurlane for them to even survive that long of a period.
The Hungarians also had a pretty panicked reaction as due to their proximity they now (correctly) predicted themselves next on the Ottoman chopping block. That said, they'd already been panicking about the Ottomans for several decades at this point so it wasn't exactly anything new.
They failed to aid Vlad The Impailer ‘s attempt to hold Mehmet’s army south of the Danube ! In fact all of the Catholic powers at the time failed …….greed power and profits is all they cared about at that time .
Fun fact : The reason why Vasily II eyes were blindfolded because after he was released by a golden horde khan , a noble by the name Dmitri Shemyaka ( who had ruled over the principality of Moscow during his absence ) blinded him and send him into exile. He would later assembled his supporters and defeat Dmitri Shemyaka. Thus regained his throne.
Side note : Vasily II was held captive in 1445 after being defeated by a Khan from the Kazan Khanate who had laid siege on Moscow 6 years earlier and forced him to flee from his capital.
@Hoàng Nguyên Đậu Because it is a way to remove your opponent from politics without killing him. In the case of Vasily II, this obviously did not help.
Russia "Look at me. Look at me. I'm the Roman Empire now." Ottomans "Look at me. Look at me. I'm the Roman Empire now." HRE: "Look at me. Look at me. I'm the Roman Empire now."
Eric Rogers I mean every educated Roman could speak Greek and Romans would even buy Greek slaves just to teach their children Greek. Rome was such a Greek fanboy that they took Greek gods. But I agree, Byzantines are not Romans.
@Eric Rogers that's a bit too broad of a statement. I mean, the Western Roman Empire was the lesser half for basically the 4th and 5th centuries, and even after the 476 fall of Rome the "Byzantines" did not experience a drastic change. Sure, they slowly evolved into something different than the 2nd century romans, but even then, the roman empire wasn't culturally stable for it's entire existence either. Also, you need to remember that for it's entire existence as a massive empire, Rome was half Latin and half Greek, so it's hard to pinpoint what "Romanised" really even means.
I believe it's important to note that the fall of Constantinople also contributed to Spain and other European countries being more interested in alternate trade routes, because going through Constantinople was a major trading route and the Ottomans taking Constantinople shut down that trading route or restricted it a lot. This helped to convince Spain about 100-150 years later to go along with Columbus's suggestion of sailing west. I think it's important to also note based on this video that Columbus was also from Genoa. Given he grew up there I'm sure he was exposed to the negative reactions of Constantinople's fall and the economic impact that had on Genoa.
Of course it had a big impact. The otomans started levying huge taxes on the importation of goods coming over the silk road, and while portugal had started going south along the coast of Africa, it spurred the Spanish to find another way to the east indies. Not to mention that a bit later portugal and the otomans had a huge war for access to india.
I think that there wasn't a great reaction because it was basically expected. By 1453 the Byzantine empire was in an advanced zombified state and surrounded by the Ottomans, so while the fall of the city was symbolic, the writing on the wall was there since some time already
Actually the lack of reaction from many Catholic states could be attributed to the defeat of Crusade against the Ottomans just a decade prior to the fall of the City, in which Poland, Hungary, HRE took part. Catholic alliance of potentially interested major powers was soundly beaten and one of the strategic goals of the coalition was hampering of Ottoman expansion towards Byzantines. Once the Crusade of Varna failed, Constantinopole was pretty much lost, it just took 10 years to die.
Actually No. The crusaders made major succession against the Turks. Turks lost way more in the war than the crusaders the main reason it was lost because both the monarchs of Poland and Hungary were killed in the war and the successors of those nation werent so interested in the war so they ordered to end the war immediately Also not to mention. Most of the time crusaders didnt even do anything, It was mostly just the hungarians recruiting peasants with no good equipment
@@levranz1054 "actually no" "proceeds to concede the entire argument" Ottomans may have lost more troops at Varna, but they could afford it, but hungarian crusaders could not and never again threatened the Ottos. @@levranz1054 I dont think you realize how Ottoman Empire actually functioned militarily. Larger loss of soldiers is literally irrelevant to the ottoman empire as long as they win the war as they are capable of replenishing their numbers due to how Sipahi cavarlies were provided. The Ming Empire was at least somewhat aware of it since the 1500’s since they traded with the Spanish for all the Silver they mined from Peru and there other western American colonies. Though they wouldn’t trade anything back so they sort of stock piled the Silver causing massive inflation problems in the empire, one of many contributing factors to Ming’s collapse.
Brandon Lyon I thought Ming’s problem was lack of silver not abundance of it. Spain changed stopped trading silver with the Ming causing inflation in Spain and deflation in Ming.
This does undersell what happened in England, as Henry VI slid into a catatonic state a few weeks later and was declared insane and unable to rule, thus setting the stage for the War of the Roses. There's speculation that the one-two punch of the fall of Constantinople (29 May) and the final defeat (for the English) of the Hundred Years War at Castillon (17 July) both contributed to Henry's slide into madness in August.

Don't forget to read about the countries that were actually fighting the Ottomans at the time (and for hundreds of years), as this video just blatantly ignored them.
That’s a great topic, but your video has a couple inaccuracies 1) It wasn’t like the Italians or even Europe only knew about the situation after the city had already fallen. They were aware of the siege, but for the most part had faith in the famous walls that had defeated so many invaders. Since they were unaware of the Ottoman canons, they thought it was just another failed siege. And the Italians, include the Pope himself even sent a couple soldiers to help the Byzantines. 2) When the city eventually fell, it wasn’t ignored by Europe. At least by all of it. King Afonso V of Portugal gathered a large army and was ready to lead the crusade, but had to cancel his plans since no other major power joined and he was in the opposite part of the continent. So at least Portugal *did* react, it simply hadn’t the means to do anything alone. The Europeans were confident in the mythic Walls of Constantinople. The use of canons was something relatively new to them. They only full understood the danger of the Ottomans when Constantinople fell, and nothing could be done.
@@comradekenobi6908 Yeah at least the Ottomans respected the Byzantine and the Roman legacy. The Genoese would be the closest to help out, while the Venetians attempted to have a redemption arc but got in too late
@Imperator The Christian part was just an exception. They like Rome but not Christianity. But the Poles screwed the pooch on that one (along with engaging in other unpopular activities like Lisowczycy raids, and the Poles' general attitude towards what they called "Muscovy" as a territory to be conquered and colonized). Your documentaries are so interesting every time. And I especially love that you cover world wide history and even events and subjects not really “famous” and “popular”
You forgot to mention the most important part and why its largely considered one of the most important historical events in the world, is because it forced western traders to seek India via ocean routes rather than over land through the middle east, so it was because of this event that exploration teams were fast-tracked to discover North and South America.
@@OfficialDenzy They never blocked the spice trade, they just made it really really really expensive, which to be fair as far as most merchants at the time were concerned, it was essentially blocking the spice trade.
@@OfficialDenzy Of course not :) but this was the first event that later would lead to push the Europeans to find another routes to Asia over the ocean, especially by going around Africa.
They had already information about India and America. This the Turkish propaganda to find something good in a disaster, considering how much the Byzantine Empire gave this world in philosophy, science, education. It would be better not to have fall. Nothing good except violence and blood came from the Ottomans.
And this is why the video IS WRONG - there was other reaction in Europe but since nobody care about the European countires which didnt speak French, English or German nobody bothered to look up for what their thouht. Just a few quick example: -Kingdom of Hungary (where the king had the second biggest income only overshadowed by the King of French at the time) all of a sudden stopped the almost 50 year long civil war between the Pro-Habsburg and Pro-Jagello faction, strated to strenghten the border fortress system in the southern border and started a military campaign against the Ottomans (which culminated in the Battle of Krusevac in late 1454 and aimed to push the Ottomans out of Serbia and create a safe route of communication between Hungary and Albania) -Bohemia and Poland also supported Hungary in these Anti-Ottoman endeavors both financially and with raw manpower, so their acted too - just more indirectly. -Portugal de-facto started the whole "explore the unknown regions and hopefully get India with a boat" endeavor because of the Fall of Constantinople. But all of this is not fit into the western-europe centric historical revisionism, i know, i know. We are just useful idiots who didnt do anything until the Horde come for us and beg the West to save us in the region all the time - its not like we fight against the Horde to from the getgo or anything while the "enlightened" West have the luxury of ignoring everything happening in the world. Being the Bulwark of Christendom is really a undervalued and ungrateful thing... Hundreds of Millins died to protect Europe didnt even make it into the side note and counted as "everyone had more pressing issues" or "just didnt cared". Well, it should've added that Balkan rulers from Serbia, Bosnia, Montenegro, Wallachia, Moldova, Albania and Latin principalities in Greece were horrified, since they truly were next. @David Josephus Daniel Nuntius languages evolve differently from each other. Unless I'm mistaken, Italian, Spanish and French are evolutions of Latin, so talking about it like Latin died is kinda false.
@David Josephus Daniel Nuntius Thing is, Greek has evolved a lot too. Yes, the average Greek can understand some words and texts from ancient Greek but there's also many texts they cannot.
@David Josephus Daniel Nuntius Not sure what is your point is. First of all, historians do not really use the term "Dark Ages" anymore, because it is misleading and unscientific. Second, if you insist to you use it, the "Dark Ages" lasted longer in the East than in the West, simply because most of all invasions to Europe came from Asia (with the exception of the Almohads.) The strategy of Ottomans, on the other hand, should be greatly appreciated:
Instead of conquering the city (which was extremely well protected by high wall and seawater) directly, Ottomans had purposely occupied most of the original territories of the Empire first and the Empire thus became much weaker before the final war in 1453. Since the Empire had lost control of most trade routes in Argean Sea either, the 'Romans' eventually lacked any financial and material supports outside the city during the time of siege. The victory of Ottomans was then just a matter of time.

@@peterii3512 wouldnt byzantines be romans until they stopped using latin?
Spain and Portugal were looking for alternative trade routes because Europe was in the way.
Columbus sailed 39 years later, not 100-150 years.

Oh I know this thanks to EU4!
Actually No. The crusaders made major succession against the Turks. Turks lost way more in the war than the crusaders the main reason it was lost because both the monarchs of Poland and Hungary were killed in the war and the successors of those nation werent so interested in the war so they ordered to end the war immediately

Don't forget to read about the countries that were actually fighting the Ottomans at the time (and for hundreds of years), as this video just blatantly ignored them.
This is a much watered down and biased version.
That’s a great topic, but your video has a couple inaccuracies
1) It wasn’t like the Italians or even Europe only knew about the situation after the city had already fallen.

That happened a couple centuries later. When constantinople fell the Turks didn't immediately block the spice trades.
@@__semidulce Yeah I know
They had already information about India and America. This the Turkish propaganda to find something good in a disaster, considering how much the Byzantine Empire gave this world in philosophy, science, education. It would be better not to have fall. Nothing good except violence and blood came from the Ottomans.
"Constantinople falls"
Europe: "Yall hear something?"
Shame...loads gun to deal with internal conflicts
Dark pre-internet times
And this is why the video IS WRONG - there was other reaction in Europe but since nobody care about the European countires which didnt speak French, English or German nobody bothered to look up for what their thouht.
Just a few quick example:
-Kingdom of Hungary (where the king had the second biggest income only overshadowed by the King of French at the time) all of a sudden stopped the almost 50 year long civil war between the Pro-Habsburg and Pro-Jagello faction, strated to strenghten the border fortress system in the southern border and started a military campaign against the Ottomans (which culminated in the Battle of Krusevac in late 1454 and aimed to push the Ottomans out of Serbia and create a safe route of communication between Hungary and Albania)
-Bohemia and Poland also supported Hungary in these Anti-Ottoman endeavors both financially and with raw manpower, so their acted too - just more indirectly.
The Ottoman issue WAS the main issue since the second half of the 14th century till early 18th century in the Kingdom of Hungary - just saying.

Oh and, please don't take this personally my friend, I have respect to Greeks and love their culture, if only all Greeks and Turks could stop insulting each other and be friends. After all, we are neighbors fir centuries now.
@Γεώργιος Γερακάκης okay I see your level of understanding from what you just mentioned, "Islam = Arab religion"? Then i could say Christian Catholic is American religion, and orthodox, i don't even know. Islam isn't an Arab religion, and Turkey does not have an Arab culture. @Γεώργιος Γερακάκης I can't say I had the best education, but I'm sure it was a pretty decent one. Qur'an is yes written and read in Arabic, Christianity however is something else. Well, it should've added that Balkan rulers from Serbia, Bosnia, Montenegro, Wallachia, Moldova, Albania and Latin principalities in Greece were horrified, since they truly were next. Also Hungary, as one of the leading European powers, was scared that they'll have to face Ottoman invasion alone. And indeed, Balkan was fully conquered by the end of the XV century, while Hungary lost its independence to the Turks by the second half of the XVI century. Thus, when in Western Europe XV and XVI century mark the beginning of renesance and new bright age, for people of Balkans and central Europe XV and XVI centuries mark the beginning of centuries long Ottoman occupation and (both metaphorical and real) slavery!
@David Josephus Daniel Nuntius languages evolve differently from each other. Unless I'm mistaken, Italian, Spanish and French are evolutions of Latin, so talking about it like Latin died is kinda false.
@David Josephus Daniel Nuntius
Thing is, Greek has evolved a lot too. Yes, the average Greek can understand some words and texts from ancient Greek but there's also many texts they cannot.
Thank you thank you thank you! Actual stuff that is relevant, you should have made this damn video.
@David Josephus Daniel Nuntius Not sure what is your point is. First of all, historians do not really use the term "Dark Ages" anymore, because it is misleading and unscientific. Second, if you insist to you use it, the "Dark Ages" lasted longer in the East than in the West, simply because most of all invasions to Europe came from Asia (with the exception of the Almohads.) West Europe is an extremely protected position. The East is not, so it took many centuries more to stabilize. France was prospering while it supported Ottoman rule which put the Balkans back hundreds of years. You cannot even compare the two situations
You call that slavery? You haven't seen what actual slavery is
1:44 The subtle squint is amazing.
Saying “heresy” is too strong. It’s actually “schism”, which has more to do with which authority you recognise, than “heresy”, which has to do with doctrine of the faith. Otherwise, there would not have been attempts to reunite.
At times when they did call each other heretics, was more out of spite and attempt to dominate than by honest belief.
There are historical records in Turkish archives that state western countries actually called those eastern christians "heretics". So what he says is historically correct
@@Mechronastamuth not just that, the rifts between Eastern and Western Christians grew because of the Teutonic campaigns to try and conquer Russia. Needless to say, the Teutonic order was unsuccessful due to the Mongols and the famous Novgorodian commander Alexander Nevsky.
There are major doctrinal differences which warrant that label, such as the primacy of the pope as well as the Essence-Energy distinction solidified in the East by St. Gregory Palamas as opposed to the Augustinian and Thomistic theology of the West.
Heresy usually meant schism, but the schism between Catholic and Orthodox Church was unique in that it was first solely a question on authority. There did not really exist a real schism until it began to be solidified with the failure of Council of Florence, fall of Constantinople and Russian opposition to healing of the schism. Even then it was not so clear cut, the eventual schism we know of today is a long historical process.
@@Dimitrije_Sukovic Orthodox still hold to Papal Primacy, and essence energy distinction is not a ground for heresy, similar thought is found in Franciscan Theology. To not forget about Eastern Catholic Churches who venerate St. Palamas as a Saint and still mainly hold to his theology.
The differences are mainly in the nature of papal authority, filioque, immaculate conception and purgatory. Emphasis on "nature of", since Easter Catholic Churches has no problem accepting these in view of their own theology that differ from the Latin thoughts of St. Augustine and St. Aquinas.
