The weather was a factor as well. I actually read a number of stories about that part of WWII. They had to drive convoys across the frozen lakes to get supplies.

Not just that, the Russians did a scorched earth policy, they retreated burning everything in their wake and when the German supply line got to thin Russian winter set in. The Germans froze to death

The Germans burned down many homes and buildings they may have used as shelter. The Russian stoves were designed to heat very slowly and continue to heat for a long time. The brutal Russian winter caused many Germans to attempt to heat the structures quickly. That caused many fires. Many of the Germans did not have winter clothing because they thought the battles would be quickly over.

@@armadillotoe I would also like to add that unlike what movies show, the vast majority of the german supply line was based on horse drawn carriages. The horses the germans were using were not used to the cold of the region and were dying very fast causing massive problems in the resupplying efforts.
