The BEST Way To Use IBC Totes For Firewood! I Think?

  • Constant improvement is what the firewood business is all about. Learning from other content creators, viewers, and firewood cutters is what it’s all about. I took an Ibc tote stacking and dumping method I saw on ‪@OutdoorsWithTheMorgans‬ that Mike learned from a viewer comment as well as an idea from both Mike M. and Mike from ‪@KNLFirewood‬ and I adapted it to fit my needs and style. I feel that with these slight improvements over what I saw this may be the best set up yet for utilizing Ibc totes for firewood. What do you think? I know John ‪@fricknjeep‬ has a lot of great ideas but I don’t even think he has tried this! Maybe I’m wrong, maybe it’s been done before and I just haven’t seen it, maybe it will fail, but here it is. My take on the open front Ibc tote for firewood. How to make them, how to modify your old totes to work in this manner, and a few other tips and tricks. Let me know what you think and thank you to all of the viewers, content creators, and friends who make all of this possible!! Also Brad from ‪@FirewoodattheFurnace‬ I know your contemplating totes, what do you think about this modification? Andrew from ‪@EastonmadeWoodSplitters‬ yet another great idea you didn’t even know you had but those removable safety chains are awesome!
    Here is a link to the boot dryer we showed, a must have a

    Hey buddy I like the idea. Curious how the very front top of the tote will hold up over time. May still get some bending but I like having the bar out of the way. I had even thought about cutting the front bar off, getting a piece of angle and drilling holes in it with wing nuts to re attach it in the same place after you load it. Constant trials and improvements. I think your on to something!

    • @hardworkingmanoutdoors
      @hardworkingmanoutdoors  11 місяців тому +6

      Thanks Brad, I thought about a few different options too but I think this way will keep it sturdy enough to hold up. Just got off the phone with John FrickNJeep and he brought up a good point. Throw a ratchet strap on for transporting to help secure the wood and sturdy the tote while moving over rough terrain but won’t need to leave it there while seasoning loading etc.

      By the time you buy these totes and modify them: you would be better off to collect some square steel tubing and build some baskets that will not bend. I have 50 of them and probably have less than $10 invested in each. Each one holds a firewood cord.

    Liking this tote design - just got a new one today and converted it over. Very nice. One thing that I noticed on mine is that the bars to hold the plastic tank in are mounted in about the right spot so I used the same bolts on there with some Loctite.(Cheap Scot didn't even need to buy bolts!) Thanks for the great video!

    WE DID IT, we did it exactly how you prescribed in your video. I think you actually did a better job than us but the results were the same. PROBLEM IS, now it makes it extremely difficult to place the plastic bladder lid over the wood for drying. REMEDY….what we have found to be the best work around for that upper metal rail it the heavy duty, commercial grade black bungee straps with metal hooks. It’s a DREAM come true. So Heath , that looks like a great idea. I think it will be plenty strong. I stack my totes when full. The curved piece you mount at 18 inches would be in the way. Why not use one of the 2 rails that hold the bladders in place. That way you can use the same bolts that come with it and you don’t need to drill holes. If you don’t stack your totes , I think it will work great. I hate cutting the totes all up but really they would be no different than Phil and Karen’s pallets they build. I copied your alwood round container. I made mine out of lumber. It works awesome , it is 4x8 with one side angled to a 20 inch opening that drops onto my splitter. I am really surprised more people haven’t followed up making something like yours. One more thing if you decide to fill your totes loose keep that piece that’s cut out and just wire it in until you dump the tote.” I have some videos coming out showing how I process my logs , watch for it. Thanks Club Dora Outdoors and Firewood.

    great idea. now you can pick up the "empty" totes with your forks from the top bar also. I was thinking about welding a hook on each fork at the right elevation so when you lift the basket, the hooks grabs one of the cross bars of the tote, kind of like a quick hitch does. It seems like the chains are super easy too!

Thanks for the comment and support. The brace bars are too short to be used. We’ll show that in an upcoming video. I’ve done a few things in the past to smooth the cut edges from grinding them, covering them with pvc, etc.

    Could the 2 cross bars that hold the bladder in the IBC tote cage be used for the same purpose? They are already drilled. The issue with your top rail mod is now you can't stack your totes vertically to save space in your wood yard.

    • @hardworkingmanoutdoors
      @hardworkingmanoutdoors  11 місяців тому

      I though about that too but they are too short. I don’t stack my totes for storage, with my big tractor it’s tough to have that much finesse. If I had a track loader it’s probably be easier. Not sure how well they’d hold up to stacking weight with the whole front wall taken out either?

      I thought alternatively to not remove the front but change it into a hood I can open to the top. Like a trunk in a sedan. It would hold the sides tougether but still keep the ability to throw in wood lose.
      I thought as well about welding the front end loader link onto the rear of the IBC so I don’t have to handle it with the pallet fork and straps but easily pick it up like the bucket or the pallet forks. The linkage (I do have the Skid link) is about 50USD (40€). This would only one to modify because I can’t get a light goods bucket in the dimensions I require.
      But due to the fact I am about replacing my compact by a wheel loader this project is delayed.

    Hiya Heath, watched Johns (FrikinJeep) channel, and he seems like a rock solid ole boy! Right, his original idea, by fixing bars parallel is good. Do just as he did, then get a piece of scrap bar/channel, 4” longer than the spread of your parallel bars. Drill a hole at each end big enough so that your new bar will loop onto your parallel bars. Then fix your two parallel bars down. You should then have a spreader bar that slides from front to back, always maintaining side support. When loading your tote slide the new bar to the back, and gradually slide it towards you as the tote fills up. That way your spreader bar is always supportive, but not an obstruction you can bang your head on. 😃 Len (Devon 🇬🇧)

I went straight to the rotating pallet forks... Very expensive but it is the ultimate way to dump a cage.. you just can't use then over a customers vehicle...

      Thanks, I agree, if I had a mill I’d probably make the wooden pallets but for me this is what I have access to. The rotating pallet forks are awesome for sure! But without them this seems to work pretty good.

    Hello. 1st time watching your channel. New subscriber too! The new mod is great for you guys who stack wood on totes, but wouldn’t work well for those of us who just loose toss the wood in. My tractor won’t lift a full stacked tote when the wood is green 😕. However, a thrown in full is easily picked up. Thanks for sharing your experiences with us.

    I like the modification you did! That was my hang up from the beginning (the bar that’s always in your way)! Excellent way to come up with a solution 👌🏻🤘🏻 Boot dryers are awesome

      Thank you, the wide open front is definitely nice but I’m the same about that dang top bar it drove me crazy and I only tried it for one tote!

    Congrats on 10,000 subscribers! I have well over a 100 IBC totes. I've been cutting out the entire front for years and have never had any kind of problems. I use 8" C-Clamps on the forks to stop them from sliding off when dumping. Works just fine. I have a Kubota tractor for dumping.

    Should work well!! I've been cutting mine open front with the top bar on for awhile now. I just stack 2 rows in mine about 3" over the top for a 1/3 cord so there is a gap between rows for air flow.

    • @hardworkingmanoutdoors
      @hardworkingmanoutdoors  11 місяців тому

      It definitely makes them easier to stack and to dump! I’ve found the same with the 275 gallon totes two rows stacked about one rings worth over the top gives you 1/3rd of a cord.

    I cut the entire front out like you do. When I stack, I do the back row first, then I have a chain that fixed on one side and an "S" hook on the other. This is where the top bar would be in front. I didn't want to cut my neck on one of the cut off pieces. When the back row is done, I put the S hook on the other side and load the front row. Either way works. Good video.

    That's a great idea. The only thing I would do differently is lay the bar flat instead of having it standing up when you tighten the bolts. That way you could still stack totes on top of each other if you need to do that. Boot dryers are awesome. Thanks.

    I like this idea..I’m not sold yet on the price of buying the totes vs just loading by hand and also the durability of the light weight totes. I do like dry feet in the woodyard “Boot dryers are awesome” for damp boots.
