There’s actually another unmentioned way to grind but it’s very similar to salmon run in a way, OCTO EXPANSION. if you beat it then you’ll be rewarded with this vending machine looking device in the main station that you can exchange CQ points for A LOT of coins, gear, and ability chunks, but as previously mentioned it’s very similar to the salmon run grind as it’s not a 100% guaranteed to give you ability chunks it’s purely random, personally what I do is grind an OCTO expansion whenever I don’t have Internet

I've known abt it for quite a while I was trying make MPU gear not to I long ago and I looked up what gear companies do I have the best chance at getting MPU with and its toni kensa and some other brand I forgot
Ah yes, the perfect guide to help me get a the last bomb defense pure that I need Don't worry, I already completed my 3 pures of sub power up, so all is good
@Vasko Games Actually uhh... sub power up is the only pure I have for each gear type, which I use with beacons... I'm only going for the stupidest pures, none of that run speed or swim speed ;)
salmon run is definitely the fastest if you are over fishing- when at 999 rank and getting 100+ eggs every match you can get multiple pieces of gear per match, although this does require playing with friends and being good at salmon run
This was genuinely helpful. I didn’t think there was anything left to figure out about the system but reducing odds of all other chunks by using a drink that favors an ability different than the gear is genius.
Here’s a tip for speeding up the grind (if you have enough cash, that is). Only use 1 star gear for the grind, and wipe the gear after the first chunk. With a ticket, plus 500 points, plus a win, you get the first chunk after 1 turf war (two if you lose). Assuming you win only half the time, it should work out to around 45 chunks per ticket (20 matches) or around 2.25 chunks per match (depending on which matches you win or lose, since two wins next to each other is more chunks that a win next to a loss). Of course you will go thru a A LOT of cash doing this
One thing to keep in mind when ordering Gear in the Square, is that 1 or 2 star gear will always have 1 or 2 sub ability slots, respectively, regardless of what the piece you ordered looks like. In other words, you can't order a one star gear and have it show up with three sub ability slots, full or otherwise. (unfortunate, given 1 star pures are so common, for the reasons Vasko gave) Great Video, Vasko 👍
i know i’m super late but i’m very sure this is wrong. just recently, i did a little experimenting on order gear. it’s possible to get 3 ability slots on 1 stars and same with 2 stars. so far, i’ve only had this happen twice with each (all were pure) and can conclude that it is not possible for it to roll with that 2nd or 3rd slot unless it’s a pure role.
This is not true. Gear you order can come with additional slots. The odds of it seem quite low, though, but it was nice to save a snail here and there when it happened. I saw a photo shared in a group of a 1 star item that was fully pure, with all 3 slots, from Murch, and it cost 100,000. I've never seen that myself and the odds must be miniscule.
I maxed out every single ability at x999 except for the last ability, I forget what it’s called but I’m close to maxing it, just from only playing salmon run, so since I don’t play turf or ranked I don’t use chunks so there’s that as well, it just takes patience most of all 👍🏽
@ImFrostbitten Oof I’m at over 4K hours but on December 2018 that’s when they added the new Main Power Up ability so to this day I’m still trynna max that out, at that time I was probably 2-3k hours into Splatoon
If you keep playing Salmon Run, and you get your ranking higher, the rate you get rewards can increase quite a bit. If you're really good at SR and you get your rank up into the 800s or 900s, your average hourly chunk haul can get way higher than 7
Fun Fact: SplatNet can provide gear that has different main abilities than their vanilla variant, such as Negative LongCuff with Main Power instead of Haunt (was worth getting lmao).
Something else! For an easy 20 gear chunks you need to go to the news’ splatoon channel that no-one uses or looks at anymore. Anyway, go the entrees about gear abilities. Just go to the bottom, redeem your first chunks, and do that for all the rest. But if you already did that then get the ones you haven’t gotten.
Been grinding chunks pretty close to this for a while! At this point I have enough to start working on semi-pures now Was wondering on the point system for gear in Ranked so that was interesting, too! Great video as always!
Slight correction for the weapons at the start: Splash can use 1.7, 2.4, or 3.1 MPU for 33.3 damage. Of these, 2.4 is typically the most optimal because it both gives you room for a main-exclusive ability as well as all your value subs. For Bamboozler, 2.8 is technically a good amount, but 3.5 is usually a better idea because you can fit values along with a couple of subs of ISM.
I needed a guideline like this. As much as I like variety on gear, sometimes you just need what works: overpowered stuff that only helps your self esteem a small hit before getting slammed by a Japanese lobby.
Thanks for the tips, ive been doing a lot of this too just in turf wars, splatoon 3s stage balance is just too painful sometimes and thats why i play 2 more often personally. I use sea snails for reroll if i really want the chunks from said gear that i have already full and use one shirt for chunk grinding (or a couple rather), im doing special saver+ special charge and some quick super jump just because its fun
7:41 well actually using a drink ticket gives x1,5 gear exp points on top of increasing the odds for an ability, not sure if you mentioned it in the vid I might have missed it ^^;
I once ordered gear from someone and it came with a full set of special power up. It costed like 120000g but it was worth it. I recommend ordering gears from people that are full set with two stars as you can get those with the two sub abilities on the first two slot and you'll need only one sea snail and 30 ability chunks to have a full three star set.
That happened to me with special power up. I used my last sea snail, and got a pure special power up hoodie. That was over a year ago, before my switch broke. I almost have what i need to repair it though.
I’ve been grinding with drink tickets and specific gear, but this helped clear a lot of questions I’ve had (especially finding out that EXP tickets don’t count toward gear.. god dammit I’m so dumb.) very well made & informal video about one the grind-fest that is abilities, I really really hope they at least let us buy chunks in 3. Thanks!! :)

You can also pet pures from Salmon Run. It's incredibly unlikely, and you have no control over what ability said pure is for, but it is possible. I've only gotten 1 in 5 years of Salmon Run, and I regret scrubbing it. It would have been worth keeping for the pure (pun intended) novelty.
Hang on if super sea snails aren’t renewable any more, then how do you get more if you’re at max level? (I’m not but I’m just wondering). Maybe they should put them into salmon run?
i think we can all agree that the worst thing when trying to get pure gear is when you're leveling a gear with the favored ability you want AND a drink that increases your chances, but it gives you some random ability you don't want-
I just hope they improve this mechanic in the third game. If you have enough ability chunks you can basically go full main power up if you wanted. But in one case, lets say you had two subs on one piece of gear. obviously you'd use ability chunks to fill the last spot but it has to cost so much chunks compared to filling the first slot. Or at least give us the ability to scrub a single slot out of the three instead of all three.
important note for ordering gear: 1 star clothes always come with 1 slot unlocked and 2 star clothes with 2 slots unlocked, even if the person you orderd it from has 3 slots unlocked!
But how do I get the drink tickets I need? Salmon run never gives me MPU drink tickets and I only have two of them. I haven’t been able to get more so I don’t want to use one when I only have two and have no way to get more.
5:39 Should be noted that these values are affected by your rank too - if you're X, you'll get about that much, a bit less for S+, less for S, even less for A+, and below is even lower but I'll assume most people actively playing aren't below A- idk
