Save the wet wipes, get a bidet
Here i though they don't need paper because the toilets there shoot water up there . So that's like the cleanest method there is . Or maybe it's referring to the countryside where its build into the ground .
When I visited Japan a few years ago, I saw both the fancy toilets and the squat style ones within the major cities. In the hotels and Airbnb's I stayed at, I only saw the fancy ones (even at the cheap places). However, I did occasionally come across the squat style ones in the metro and at almost every historical site. As for toilet paper, you can still use it to wipe off the bulk and to dry yourself. (Maybe TMI, but I hope that gives some context). The most peculiar things were the signs above the modern toilets with instructions written in Mandarin and Hindi warning people to not squat on the seat.
It's clean down there but wet so you still need to wipe it dry.
