  • Furniture Free Living!
Hello beautiful humans, welcome to my furniture free minimalist living room. I mentioned that I was decluttering and creating a minimalist living room in a previous video, and I thought it was time to give you a tour.
Although...there’s really not much to tour. Because there’s nothing here.
But you’re probably wondering why I decided to go furniture free, in my living room at least, and whether you should consider doing it too?
I'll share all the benefits of a furniture free minimalist lifestyle in this video, plus dish about what caused me to make this radical decision.
I’m curious if you’re going to go furniture free too, or if you’re just going to dedicate one minimalist room to creative movement, so leave me a comment and let me know what you think about all this.

I'm 60 and my husband is 65. Last year we started sleeping on the floor (me on a Japanese futon & him on a reg matching mattress). Last month we made the switch to a furniture-free dining/living room. We kept our regular LR and turned the DR into a wide-open space to use for more movement. Already seeing benefits with my flexibility and strength. Love it and would recommend it to anyone no matter what age. Thanks for your encouragement and example!

That’s awesome Pam. My husband and I are sleeping on a blow up mattress and thought we would transition to a bed, but my best sleep is in snuggled up in fluffy sleeping bag. Soon I’ll fold up the blow up mattress and find a comfortable pad for the floor. Happy to see that many others live like this. I have scoliosis and some joint pain, and getting off the floor has been so helpful for added movement.

I did this to my bedroom. All I have is a mattress on the floor and a yoga mat.
No dressers bed frame, desk or chairs. All my clothes, bags, shoes fit into my closet
It is liberating and calming asf.

I slept on a foam mattress for a few years, but I bought a rubberized mattress cover specifically to prevent damp and mould, which worked really well, as most of the moisture in a mattress comes from your body, perspiration and condensation. 😊

I am so glad I found this. In the last few weeks, I've been considering removing most of my living room furniture and thought "who on earth does that?!". Of course, when I google couch free or furniture free homes I discovered that LOTS of people are into this for the very same reasons I've been marinating on. I already scheduled a Salvation Army pick-up for my tables and chair. I may very well add my couch to that list--the TV. I"m not sure I'm ready to get rid of it just yet, so I"ll likely tuck it away in my spare closet. Thank you for sharing--it's been very affirming and validating.

my husband and I live in a tiny home. we've been minimalists for years (but you don't have to be minimalist to be furniture free). with high ceilings and a loft we don't feel confined at all and now we just have a love seat in the living room that pulls out to a twin bed, with cushions we can throw on the floor for visitors as needed. we have no table just an island we stand at to eat or do other things. we put the tv up in the loft and since you can't stand up there, we use floor chairs if we want to watch a show. the house is light and airy with lots of space and only 400 sq. ft. and with hardly any "stuff" to take care of (only what we actually use), we have lots of time to visit with people in our tiny home community.

After living in a cluttered home for several years, I finally decided that the time was right to clear out all the chunky furniture items (except my bed and my dining table, which belonged to my mother, and a few other pieces. I found homes for all the cupboards, dinnerware, extra linen and clothes and books which had overtaken my home. Now I have a spacious home with very little furniture, no carpets and only a couple of mats on the floor, four simple chairs that are more like garden chairs and a couple of cupboards to hold my meagre collection of plates and glassware, and a few books etc. My dressing room has a small wardrobe and a few plastic drawer sets to hold some of my clothes that I use regularly. A big plastic box holds my linen and that's about it. The kitchen has a stove and fridge and a little stand to keep my dishes and cups that I use regularly as well as the pans for cooking. A small cupboard serves as a place to store my rice and flour etc. I keep a few plants in my balcony to dress it up a bit and that generally sums up the stuff in my home. I found that by clearing out all except what I truly need for living, I can actually breathe easily when I see the space between the few items I own.

It’s so nice to know others who live similarly. I’m very fortunate to rent a one bed house, it’s not big, two floors the main first floor & the ground floor which is half this size with all the social functioning stuff. It’s a light space, I love to move & dance. Having rented pretty much all my adult life I like to maximise space wherever possible. Aside from a book case, a chest of draws, a small A-frame wardrobe & a trunk, I have no other furniture or storage other than a foldaway floor desk which I was inspired to buy due to my appreciation of Japanese traditional lifestyle. I have a futon on a low single futon bed frame with a tatami mat (hard beds are my thing…time in India showed me they do something similar with solid base bed or in some places, especially the countryside & those who are poor, sleep on the floor) which doubles as a bench/window seat useful for anyone who visits & can’t cope with my peculiar choice of little furniture.

If I end up in my own space though, I might just try using a nice curvy lounge for me and my poodles and skipping the whole traditional lamp, end tables, seating for six style of living room. Or maybe just a beanbag, extra large, 😆

Nice video. I'm sleeping on a futon (gift from family) for more than a year now, before that I've slept a year or 2 on a simple sleeping bag (flatter and better in my opinion). The coming weeks I'm planning to get rid of my couch and extra chair (in which I haven't sat even once since I got it 5 years ago). I might get some backlash from family but I feel like I'll be happier with a more spacious living room in my little appartment.

    • @SukieBaxter
      @SukieBaxter  3 роки тому +3

Hey Erin, it really will depend on your body size and shape. But since human bodies do not distribute weight completely evenly from head to toe, a dent or divot is inevitable where the heaviest part of your body rests on the shikibuton.
That said, I slept comfortably on mine for years, and depending on where you buy them, it can be possible to have them "fluffed" every so often for a small fee. So it really comes down to personal preference.
I will say that if you're a person who tends to move frequently, a shikibuton or futon is the way to go! Much easier to move than a mattress!
