Hobos lullaby

  • "This song was written by Goebel Reeves (1899-1959), a genuine hobo, known as the "Texas Drifter." He performed hobo and cowboy songs, accompanying himself on the guitar, with a yodel and a trill that were to become the hallmark of his style. When Reeves's father was elected to the state legislature, the family moved to Austin. There Reeves became a legislative page and first encountered hoboes and their songs. Wounded during World War I, Reeves was discharged from the service and adopted an itinerant lifestyle. In the early 1920s he teamed up with Jimmie Rodgers to tour the eastern United States. He assimilated much of Rodgers’s country music style. After spending time in Europe as a merchant seaman, Reeves returned in the late 1920s to continue his vagabond lifestyle, supporting himself by occasionally stopping into radio stations and convincing the manager to put him on the air"

Go to sleep you weary hobo
Let the towns drift slowly by
Can't you hear the steel rails hummin'
    That's the hobo's lullaby
I know your clothes are torn and ragged
And your hair is turning gray
Lift your head and smile at trouble
There'll be peace and rest someday
[So go to sleep you weary hobo
Let the towns drift slowly by
Can't you hear the steel rails hummin'
    That's the hobo's lullaby]
    [Humming]
    Don't you worry 'bout tomorrow
    Let tomorrow come and go
Tonight you're in a nice warm boxcar
Safe from all that wind and snow
[So go to sleep you weary hobo
Let the towns drift slowly by
Can't you hear the steel rails hummin'
    That's the hobo's lullaby]
I know them police cause you trouble
    They cause trouble everywhere
But when you die and go to Heaven
    There'll be no policemen there
[So go to sleep you weary hobo
Let the towns drift slowly by
Listen to the steel rails hummin'
    That's a hobo's lullaby]
    [Humming]

Look up wwoof on google. You can travel cheap, get a free meal everyday, and have a free place to stay if you volunteer on farms as you go. Just go wander on your off days and the in the afternoons - experience and meet the people in each place instead of just exploring the land. Did this in my early 20s - best time of my life. You organize everything with each farmer personally before you go, and they background check everybody. Really awesome. I know multiple people who rode their bikes across america doing this too.
