- Have you ever wondered why Ford doesn’t make a competitor to the Chevy Corvette?
The Chevy Camaro has always been a strong competitor to the Ford Mustang, but Ford doesn’t have a competitor to the Chevy Corvette, at least not in 2018.
James Pumphrey’s son Nolan Sykes explores the histories of the Chevrolet Corvette and the Ford Thunderbird. The Chevrolet Corvette is still around, but Ford’s answer, The Thunderbird?

Would love to see Ford bring back the T-bird as a real Corvette competitor. Like a mid engine lower grade GT40.
Really, I'd love to see them introduce something like a "baby" GT that serves as a regular series production rival for the R8, 570s, and similar cars. They could leave it there if they wanted and ignore the space the Corvette occupies, not because I think it's unimportant but because that'd serve as a more aspirational price point. Then you could have something like the Thunderbird competing with the Corvette beneath that. That'd be a shot in the arm for American performance machines, much in the same way that Lincoln is trying to bring back the idea of luxury distinct from Germany's offerings.
@derek Graf - The Thunderbird took a decidedly different (and much more profitable) direction in 1958 by becoming a sport/luxury 4 seater, while the Corvette retained its 2 seater sports car layout. Ford tried to reintroduce the T-Bird in 2002, but it never really caught on with the buying public. If Ford decided to make a Corvette competitor, they would be much better off starting with a clean slate and new name.
Backgammon I agree with you I think they should at least give it another attempt. If not the T-bird then make something new that could compete with it. With how far the mustang has come there’s no doubt in my mind that they could really give chevy a run for their money. Plus a little competition would help both vehicles become amazing products. I also think that ford should make the GT a little faster to make room for this new car in the lineup.

Something besides a variation of the Mustang platform.

29 with a C5Z. Cause I couldnt afford the C6Z with student loans. Guess I'll get one when im 50!
True! I once helped organize a race at the Palm Beach Fair Grounds. It was an event where you could run your street car if you wanted. We met with the local Corvette club and mentioned that people would be trying to go fast, they all looked at us like we just landed from Mars. Their idea of an event was that they would drive to a restaurant 20 miles away and rub on their cars. Oh and they all wore open shirts, and gold chains.

It would be interesting to see an alternate timeline where Ford decided to keep the Thunderbird as a 2-seater sports car and continued to compete against the Corvette from 1958 onwards.
Yeah, true but the mustang would probably not exist
Ironic that the retroactively styled 2002 Thunderbird ... resembles the classic Corvette.

I thought the GT and the Corvette were in the same class in LeMans
It's not really comparable because of the restrictions put on cars and taken off of others, endurance racing is weird because an aston martin corvette and ford gt can all be in the same series but a base ford gt is waaaay different than the racing version. Because a base ford gt with aerodynamic upgrades and weight reductions would be too speedy it gets weight put on it so that stuff like the corvette can compete. The endurance racing board/government or whatever regulates cars for fairer racing if that makes sense.
Corvette never raced LeMans
@@seamuscullen9868 your partially right.... The Ford GT is often referred as a homologation special because most of the car is used in racing.... I can Appreciate/respect that it's a Carbon fiber tube car... But with the V6...Performance is lacking like an OVER-priced FERRARI Street Model. And that's what the Ford fanboys are missing. A Less powerful ACR Viper would easily out run it on the track if it had a DCT transmission...maybe even the 100 more horses 750hp ZR-1.
Corey Corey...The c6 ZR-1 with (DOT track tires) barely beat the GTS Viper.
The T/A 1.0 Beat the C6 Zr-1....Still with street tires.
T/A 2.0 must have been to much for too little $$$ as Motor trend were too much of little B*tches to test one.
ACR ( SHIT !!! ) on the same power/sAME hp/ SAME TRACK TIRE competition from corvette. (FACT !!) FYI. Sad it took GM so long to make an ACR competitor.. (OF Course they waited until the ACR was No more! )I still have my Corvette history poster....they just got soft.
Chevy probably just breaks even selling 30,000 Corvettes. If Ford built a competitor that sold 10,000 both Companies would lose a lot money. Chevrolet keeps the Corvette around as a halo car for some of their (ahem) less desirable offerings.
Ron... Just break even?? That's Not true.. GM North America president Mark Reuss said, "...the Corvette turns a healthy profit by itself....This [The Corvette] makes as much money as any of the top-profit models in our company,” Reuss said. “That is why we do it. Plus it is used to develop new engine/transmissions which is adds value to the company.

@kapil busawah - The Viper's gone forever - you and others need to get over that. They're not going to spend money on a newer version of a vehicle that few wanted. They had trouble selling the last ones, they sat on dealer's lots for a long time. Car companies need new sources of design to stay competitive in the market, not by resurrecting a prior car that failed in the long run.

Why does Chevy not make a competitor to the Ford Focus RS rally car? Or any AWD rally car at all?
I'm surprised also since they try to make a mark in Europe. GM's AWD sportish vehicles are through Opel/Vauxhall but they're never to the same level as the Focus RS. I think currently GM's quickest AWD car would be the CT6 3.0T AWD, which is a boat since it's marketed towards 6 or 7 series, but it can go 0-60 in 5.0 seconds. I think it would be badass for Ford to start plans and working on a new t bird or hell maybe even a new ford vehicle
Jackson Mb bring back the torino, thunderbird, and the falcon
2019 transit connect, 2019 ranger, 2020 bronco... What more do u want
ItsJrock 2018 ecosport
Not a big market for these. Do you like losing money?
Somthing 2dr and v8 rwd
1:16 I like how they have power seats for basic stuff. My 2017 mustang doesn’t even have power seats
Ford has a Corvette rival. It's called the GT40.
The Thunderbird returned to its roots with the Turbo Coupe in the 80s and the Supercoupe in the 90s. Both were awarded motor trend's car of the year when they debuted. I guess it wasn't enough to bring back sales. Makes me wonder what could've been if perhaps every Thunderbird was as good as the turbo or Supercoupes.
Thanks for this video. I had always wondered more about the history of my 95 Supercoupe.
The 90s T-Bird also had a platform with an IRS which allowed the V8 modle to pull a .86 G average on the skid pad which was very impressive for the time. It could take a corner harder than the mid 90s BMW M3 and M5s.
My family had a 89 with the 3.8, the very first year of the MN-12. It cut corners like it was on rails even at high speeds. It just wasnt very fast, and the transmission kinda sucked but I dont recall it breaking down and the fuel economy was decent.
Ben Dover yeah. I guess the Thunderbird would have to go back to being a roadster to truly compete.
civic cruiser I've got a 95 super coupe and I can agree that it both corners hard and its transmission is slower than the hour hand of a clock. The super coupe is fast enough to break traction on the wheels throughout 1st gear even with slightly improved tires
Corvette costed three times as much...
I want a corvette up to speed
audey pabalate that's the one I am waiting for 😂
@audey pabalate - Find a very steep hill, climb in and hold on! Lol
I got an 03 thunderbird i really like this car!!
Exactly what I've always said to my car enthusiasts friends.
1:56 Ford Deez Nuts or Ford Houboutdat would be great.
nah fam I'd like the Ford Cashmeoutside
Ford Eatadickpriusdrivers
Good people it is 2018.
The
Struggled of the C4 corvette and how it's a great bang for the buck in today's market.
Nobody would be able to Ford DeezNuts
Well they would if Ford mass produced the Daytona GT.
How could Ford mass produce a car they never built? Shelby American built that car in Venice, California. There are already a few companies that make a replica Daytona.
For the love of Car Jesus, bring back the Viper!!!
@Silverwing - You'd do well to wish for another car! The Viper will never be back! They couldn't give them away at the end of production. Fiat needs to make money on Chrysler products, not lose money.
@@Loulovesspeed you know how many people would go absolutely crazy if dodge made a mid-engine viper? A roaring V-12 in the back... Corvettes would be crying. Europe would be back on its knees. The viper is a legendary name for dodge and I know that if they hyped it up well enough it would fly off the lot (literally).
@@harleymann2830 The current rumor of a new Viper suggests a V8 rather than the V10, or V12 and no talk of mid engine.
@@Loulovesspeed well I wasn't saying the rumors were saying that. I was just saying if they did that I'm 100% positive they would smash corvettes.
My great uncle still loves his thunder birds
As always awesome video
I'd rather see something like a Viper from Ford, perhaps call it a Daytona and style it after the Cobra of the same name
Ben Rogue Daytona Cobra?? Ouuuuu
dodge daytona already exists.
I'd rather see something like a Viper from Dodge, really wish they would bring it back with a smaller displacement V10 so it could get through emissions. would give all the people who don't like the Corvette going mid engine something to buy.
@@WhoThisGuy515 any sports car with a high redline and more then 8 cylinders would be amazing from America. Worst comes to worse is you make it in the 4 to 5 liter range.
@@dr.tragedy1941 That's right, and Dodge copied the Shelby Daytona name!
A real nice, muscly Cobra reboot would probably do it.
The GT is a Ford version of a Corvette. Just because the pricepoint isn't equal doesn't mean it's in a different class. It's just in a different sports car price range. Corvettes can hold their own against any sportscar manufacturer in one way or another. Top speed, acceleration, cornering, braking, and its price point are what make the Vette what it's always been, bad ass. It's not the best car in every single category, but it's the best sports car overall when considering every category including its price point. I love Donut's content. I'm still catching up on the older videos.
Your points are well taken. We need another serious American competitor to the renown Corvette. Ford had the Thunderbird but ruin the concept by adding 2 more seats and losing it's competitive sports car edge it once shared with the Corvette. The Ford Shelby was too exclusive and not designed for mass production. It seems a shame that a country as great as ours only has 1 true sports car. Ford needs to rethink it's marketing and business model and see if it's feasible to produce either a serious Thunderbird or Ford Shelby 2 seater sports car to go head to head with the Corvette. It could be a win, win for the consumer and auto company as well.
This country’s only true sports car is a Jeep
Gregory Trane... lets just hope this happens: www.motor1.com/news/182350/2020-shelby-cobra-concept-rendering/
Do you mean the Shelby Cobra? That was an AC with a Ford engine, and Carroll Shelby's company actually didn't get absorbed into Ford and become their performance division until after 1970. Shelby Cobras, Mustangs, or whatever else weren't technically Fords until then, any more than RUFs are Porsches or Lotuses are Toyotas. Besides, I personally don't think the Cobra/Ace was comparable to the Corvette, it was more like a Miata. It was more about carving corners with a raw, open-air experience. The handling wasn't even that great, the main appeal of British roadsters by brands like AC, MG, and Triumph was the connectedness to the road and the completely raw, comfortless experience. The ride was incredibly rough by the standards of the day (and almost unbearable by modern standards), there was nothing inside except the seats and steering wheel, and it was much smaller and tighter than a Miata let alone a Corvette.
The Corvette is the attainable, daily-drivable supercar, which is precisely why most people don't consider it to be a real supercar. The AC Cobra is one of the rawest, least practical British sports car roadsters ever to grace the roads, and I don't think the fundamental character of the car changed much when Shelby put an enormous Ford engine under the hood, if anything it got even more wild and undailyable. 50s-70s British roadsters (except arguably the Triumph Stag) have almost nothing in common with the Corvette. It's a class of cars that doesn't really exist anymore, Lotus is the closest you can get, and they're not even close to the original price range.
MrUbuntuking... the cobra was a tuner car i agree.. and was never a factory model.. however, the track experience had helped ford with its engineering and tuning department which would then be implemented to the Shelby Mustang.. Shelby helped Ford racing team.. it would have been great if they moonlighted with a corvette competitor much like the dodge viper
i think Ford would have had a great rivalry with Corvette had they developed a competitor, and the closest i can think of is the cobra.. because unlike the thunderbird, the cobra was not a car for the family.. however, the greatest strength of the corvette is the fact that a middle class american can save for it, and buy it (even a used c4 is great).. people buy the corvette not for exclusivity, but really for pure joy of being fast.. i think most people who buy corvettes, know they arent as exotic as ferraris or lambos, but they still can competitive on track
Okay, I agree that Ford needs to make a true competitor to the Corvette, but the 2013 Mustang GT500, for instance, can go nearly 200 MPH which is faster than just about any Corvette except for the ZR1 Corvettes, regardless, my point is that Ford has the Capability to make a Corvette competitor, I believe they proved that with the 2013 GT500, they just need to wake up and get to work on a Corvette competitor similar to the old Ford Thunderbird back in the day. That would be good, not just for Ford, but for Chevy too, as most of you should know, competition between companies is always good as the companies push to make a product that is better than their rival company’s product.
Didn't the big three: Ford, Chevy and Dodge have a "sports car shootout" with the Corvette, Viper and Ford proposed using the GT. The other two said "no no" to the Ford GT, so Ford brought a Shelby Mustang and still won?
What?? I honestly can't make out what you're trying to say.
YES THANK YOU Ford has the best cars between those 3 for sure they have plenty of great cars over Chevy
Never happened
Alamyst2011 proof?
Nickk IRL Burden of proof is on you sir. I did a quick Google search that came back with conflicting reports. So. BS
Closest thing they came was they actually made the engines for the ZR1 Corvettes in the 1990s. They actually tag them as being made by Mercury Marine Division. LOL
I like how you used a 1959 fairlane as the 1958 thunderbird lol.
I happen to have a 1959 fairlane cop car. Along with a 1959 thunderbird jcode and a 1966 thunderbird 390. Love the thunderbirds
