i love how so many of these images look like they've been taken with flash on, like someone just came across these animals randomly and thought "i need to have this thing's picture"
I think it also helps with the glowing eyes for many of the pictures, too. You wouldn't really have to edit in glowing eyes if you took a picture of a cat and the flash causes eye-shine. (Fun fact: that effect is caused by the tapetum lucidum, which is a reflective layer in many nocturnal animals' eyes.)
I wonder if animals that aren’t mammals feel less relatable to most people? More tricky to connect too? Idk couldn’t be me I feel like I’d connect best with insects
As someone who is into the Starflesh aesthetic, birds are widely seen in Starflesh, just muffled by other images. Birds can be seen as heavenly, like doves, but also as a representation of death, like crows. Owls represent both. Images that I have gathered that are labeled starflesh or I think that fit the aesthetic are owls. A melanistic barn owl in a dark barn house with luminescent eyes, a snowy owl hiding itself in branches during a snowy night, many photos of owls on hunts during the night, and a snowy owl battling with a crow during a snowy even. I would say that owls are underrated in the starflesh aesthetic and are usually blocked by the many images of deers and cats. But if you scroll just a little more, you'll find some birds here and there, and if lucky enough, you'll see an image of a beautiful barn owl that soars above the flash of the camera, under the night sky and the many shadows of tree branches.
Something I’ve noticed about starflesh/cosmic horror/body horror stuff is that in so many of these unearthly versions of familiar creatures, they’re given too many eyes, or teeth, or mouths, or limbs… but hardly ever too many ears, and never too many noses. It’s understandable of course; ears and noses aren’t a direct threat to us like teeth or claws or horns, and when they are focused on they’re always considered either cute or comical- just look at clowns or rabbits or fennec foxes. Actually, in quite a few humanoid monster designs, the ears and/or nose are often completely absent, with little more than a pair of slit nostrils or a triangular hole in place of a nose. Perhaps it’s because we rely on sight more than hearing or smell for survival than other creatures, but we often forget how much scent and sound play into a predator’s hunting tactics. Not only can most predators hear or smell us long before we could ever see them, but they can use these to hunt us down regardless of how well we hide or how far we run.
Starflesh is one of my favorite aesthetics :) ,it's so cool to me I draw a lot of different animals with many eyes and wings ,mostly the jackalope as it is my state cryptid :)
I think it's because it is more accurate to how children perceive God and night. Children believe what you tell them but what they don't, you make up. God is in the clouds so God is the clouds, so days without clouds are days without God and stuff like that. Animals are scary when you are small, you don't know what a dog bite feels like, you don't know what poison ivy is like, you don't know why the world is dark at night. You don't yet have the skills to understand why you have to feel fear, why everything is so loud. It's something between the joy of play and imagination and Old Gods grownups don't understand.
as a Starflesh creator, I feel sad as with the TikTok ban, no one may see my work anymore. Wish other platforms would let others enjoy my creations and edits
This is new to me and i like it, i find the images/edits of starflesh comforting(and a bit nostalgic), I'm sure I've came across of this before but simply didn't have a name for it.
I've seen a lot of these images before!! I had assumed they were all the work of the same artist, and had no idea this was an aesthetic with multiple creators participating in it! This is awesome! ^^
so this video kinda gave me an existential crisis but i never knew what starflesh was before this video, and the art is amazing! Keep up the amazing series!
YOU SHOULD CHECK OUT THE ANIMATED SHOW HILDA !! it isnt starflesh or cosmic horror but its a cute short with grear vibes and makes you feel less like the center of the universe
@@sparkcrushervcm idk they have "too un-understandable" vibes but like in the same way our mountains or a dazzling natural wonder does if that makes sense? the deerfox is sorta cosmic thoooo
Yesss guys I totally agree, there is a bit of cosmic- y magical stuff tho like how the monsters/giants have their own motivations that are hard for humans to understand. Really cool show tho
You truly manage to make every video feel like it’s catered to me. I mean, allusions to Christian Theology, TMA, an unusual aesthetic, what could one want more?!?
I am an avid lover of Starflesh. Themes presented in such a beautifully elegant, while very disturbing, manner always catches my eye. The way you approach it’s fixation on fear really captures why I love it so much. It feels terrifying, but glorious. Like witnessing an Angel. The Thing is a wonderful comparison, aswell as one of my favorite horror movies, Annihilation. I think if your looking for Starflesh media then it’s a great place to look
omg. I am watching this before i leave for school, this video itself has changed my understanding of myself as well as so many more things. Before watching this, i had no idea that my feeling and desire of hope, countered by loss and hatred even had a name. (i just got back from school:) i have no idea how you arent booming on here this is some of the best content ive ever seen, and ive seen quite the lot lol!
This is such a unique and lovely deep dive of what I consider my favorite aesthetic. I also want to thank you for the explanation you used for Therianthropy. Though it's not 100%, it's much better than most younger therians on this platform give. No offense to said youngings. Some are simply not completely educated on the term. Thank you for explaining Therianthropy without excluding or de-validating physical therians. - Star, A Hungarian Mudi Therian
I'm so glad you touched on the animalistic side of Starflesh. I've only discovered the aesthetic recently, but I was very drawn to that aspect specifically. The need to hunt or the fear of being hunted resonates with me deeply, and I find it fascinating.
Wow, i've seen starflesh images, but had never heard the term before, or knew that it was a whole aesthetic. This is educational! There's a similer character to Soccoro (potentially) called Darkness Cat in Box of Light. It's a manga about a convenience store that exists between life and death.
I had seen this aesthetic online but didn’t know it had a name! The themes of body horror, nature and animals as well as the cosmic horror aspect all remind me of the film ‘annihilation’ 🖤
I first heard starflesh from when u mentioned it on ur weirdcore vid, always love watching ur aesthetic deep dive series, there are so informative yet calming
I absolutely love the religious/divine aspect of starflesh! I’m not even done with the video (about 4 minutes in rn) and as a Christian I love seeing how people interpret spiritual imagery/scripture in modern times like with this aesthetic. Thank you for making this video!
I appreciate you making a video about such and underrated aesthetic I've never heard of, but yet I have been making art that is very similar to this for years now. Love your videos 🙂

been a starflesh lover for foreverrrr this is so cool to see!!!!! i love how even in the name you kind of get a sense of like. it’s out of this world yet familiar to what we know
Wdym not up to your standards? As a new viewer, this was a great firstish video from you-- especially having woke up not long ago. Thank you for covering Starflesh. I've been rather fond of it as of late. I have, in fact, based one of my fursonas off of a Starflesh image in this video, haha! Thanks again for the enjoyable watch.
I really enjoyed this! While watching, I felt that another part (in my mind at least) was finding beauty in the unnatural alongside fear. The peace/awe from the stars, and the horror of being flesh combined. In a way, it feels like it (as you mentioned it being popular among therians) could describe the feeling of being a creature being trapped in the wrong body-either a creature like that trapped in a human’s body or a creature like that trapped in its own.
, when I first looked it up, it looked like a hybrid of angel core, and dreamcore, almost alien li,e, also a bit of sea creatures and and ocean life, and I didn’t know I have loved it for so long, this is an awesome depiction of it, awesome vid!
ohh i didnt know the name of this :0 i sooo agree with the 'i feel like its something ive forgotten'. seeing these images makes me feel like im barely only starting to itch something, a deep need to. well you said it pretty well, rip something open and chase and bask in it. the kind of wildness i feel sometimes x3 i see a bird and my thoughts are filled with ohhh you should grab it and rip its wings off and twist its neck and eat... then i feel bad because its just a lil pidgeon!! starflesh gives me a kind of jealousy. i wish i could express what i feel as i stare at the sky at dawn.. something akin to that feeling of wonder and fear. i can never write down my feelings accurately overall really great video!
love how many people in the comments are realizing "oh, i was starflesh all along" including me and my decades old fursona 😂❤ and [sighs] so many of my interests have been compared to, or the fandom has recommended, TMA.... looks like i'm just going to have to listen. i know i'll like it, it's just so long at this point that it's a commitment 😭 excellent video, it's good to have a name for the aesthetic i've unknowingly loved for years. i was calling it "supernal" but starflesh is so much better ❤
I would like to add on that another reason dogs are depicted as violent and “aggressive”in starflesh is because it subverts the idea that they are companions who would never hurt you intentionally. Dogs, when treated right, dont want to hurt you. Even if you hurt them, they won’t retaliate because they see you are remorseful and didn’t mean to. But if a dog gets abused enough they become weary of the world around them, bearing their teeth in self defense because they do not want to be as broken and vulnerable as they once were. No matter who it is, they will bark and bite because to fight first prevents them from getting attacked later. That fear of getting hurt, of unknown intentions, resonates with people who have been in toxic relationships/have been betrayed multiple times by loved ones. If the people you care about most also hurt you the most, how do you know that other people aren’t going to do the same? Better to push them away, yell and snarl, than to let anyone get close enough to hurt you again. This probably gets more obvious when you see starflesh quotes surrounding dogs/wolves. A lot of them are about trauma changing a person, or never being who you once were when a severely traumatic event happens to you; how these moments can transform you from a passive, loyal companion to a growling, angry, hurting beast.
I just rewatched this video and it made me remember these 2 separate but similar incidents that I had as both a child and a teenager. When I was about 7 my mom were at our cabin and she had me paint over scratches on the truck. While doing so I had my back turned to the forest and one of our chickens was hanging around with me, but suddenly I heard something behind me and knew I was being watched. What was behind me was a giant mountain lion, and I locked eyes with it. Luckily it ran off, but in that I moment I was terrified but was also full of wonder. In my kid brain I felt it was in a way welcoming, but instinctually I knew it was dangerous. My second incident happened while I was waiting for my bus to arrive (I also just moved up to Alaska) when I suddenly got the feeling that I was being watched. This time it was a decently large black bear, and it was walking right up to me. In that moment I felt nothing but fear. There was no sense of wonder or welcome, just fear. When it approached me it was about 7 to 10 ft away rom me and it just stood there and made eye contact with me. It felt more like it was starring at me out of curiosity. Then someone drove up to us and it just walked away. After looking at these images (especially the wolf/dog ones) I get that feeling again when I was a child making eye contact with that mountain lion, and idk why I feel this way I just do.
I once, when I was younger. I watched a movie that had Starflesh like stuff in it. Tbh, I forgot the name of it. But it was basically about this family that moved into a house in the middle of nowhere (in a forest. The house also had a farm). On the first night, they all woke up to an asteroid that crash in front of their house. The asteroid basically mutated the animals and then the family. Driving everyone insane (It reminded me of Starflesh a lot) :3
this movie sounds insanely cool and something that is right up my alley!! if you remember any other details, could you share them? i would love to find and watch it :))
Turns out I’ve been adding starflesh photos to my pinterest boards without even knowing lol. A song that I like that kind of gives me the same vibes as starflesh is Seven Angels Greet Me In The Carpark by Kiki Rockwell, the music video for it as well! It’s got such a unique vibe I haven’t been able to get from any other song, it’s eerie, it’s heavy, it’s beautiful it’s haunting I love it so much!!!
Starflesh reminds me of LucaCore it kind of has the same “feel” to it like eyes in the dark, cursed objects and animals with more than the proper amount of legs and eyes.
Small correction: Ghosttundra uses they/them pronouns!
I've never heard of Starflesh, but like many things at my age, it just seems like another name for an aesthetic I've been enjoying for decades.
very true, most of internet aesthetics are just re-packaged motifs from the past
I know right? I appreciate that everything has a name now, but many of these "new" aesthetics have existed for a while.
Luca core?
i love how so many of these images look like they've been taken with flash on, like someone just came across these animals randomly and thought "i need to have this thing's picture"
i haven't thought of that! you're right about it, it adds to the mystery
Lol I always imagine them as like last moments before they atre killed by said animals kinda like in the FNAF VHS tapes
I think it also helps with the glowing eyes for many of the pictures, too. You wouldn't really have to edit in glowing eyes if you took a picture of a cat and the flash causes eye-shine. (Fun fact: that effect is caused by the tapetum lucidum, which is a reflective layer in many nocturnal animals' eyes.)
i like the bitey dog aspect of this aesthetic. teeth of canine animals fascinate me and are kind of a comfort in some way
It started to remind me of the aliens from Attack the Block
Same! Stuff like this made me adore canine imagery
I'm surprised that owls aren't one of the main animals associated with this aesthetic since they have such a unique and mysterious vibe to them.
I wonder if animals that aren’t mammals feel less relatable to most people? More tricky to connect too?
Idk couldn’t be me I feel like I’d connect best with insects
I’m surprised foxes aren’t involved. They are quite mysterious, and isn’t mystery so important in this aesthetic?
As someone who is into the Starflesh aesthetic, birds are widely seen in Starflesh, just muffled by other images. Birds can be seen as heavenly, like doves, but also as a representation of death, like crows. Owls represent both. Art comforts the disturbed and disturbs the comforted.
Love how this is getting attention! I’ve loved starflesh for ages and it’s so nice to see it recognized.

Hey don't worry about taking a break, everybody needs to take a break sometimes
thank you^^
I once, when I was younger.
God I love this aesthetic.
Probably due to my want for change and love of body horror, but it is a good aesthetic nonetheless.
Turns out I’ve been adding starflesh photos to my pinterest boards without even knowing lol. A song that I like that kind of gives me the same vibes as starflesh is Seven Angels Greet Me In The Carpark by Kiki Rockwell, the music video for it as well! It’s got such a unique vibe I haven’t been able to get from any other song, it’s eerie, it’s heavy, it’s beautiful it’s haunting I love it so much!!!
you should check out the visions of st.hubert and cynocephali
I'm know sure if it really qualifies as Starrflesh, but the Rusty Lake games really give me this sort of vibe
“Get bug spray sprays bug spray into star flesh creatures eyes” D:

The Thing reference! Niiiice
The Thing and The Magnus Archives mentioned, I have appeared.
I personally feel like the two headed calf poem also links to it??? Idk how to exactly explain rn but: therian + trans experience + body horror
I wonder who created Starflesh Aesthetic. and how people came across it.
i squealed like a little 8 yr old girl getting a pony for christmas when i saw the thumbnail

HEY! STOP! YOU CALLED THE YULE CAT, YULE CAT.. WHEN IT COULD'VE BEEN CALLED MURDER FLOOFF!!!
RE8 MENTIONED WHATTT
Starflesh reminds me of LucaCore it kind of has the same “feel” to it like eyes in the dark, cursed objects and animals with more than the proper amount of legs and eyes.
