- Excerpts from the original Broadway production of Bob Fosse's "Dancin,'" from about the middle of its run of over four years, December 1980 at the show's second home, the Ambassador Theatre. The company at this time included Edmund La Fosse, Bruce Anthony Davis, John De Luca, Richard Korthaze, Cynthia Onrubia, and Alyson Reed.
I saw this on Broadway back then, but never thought I'd see it again! It was so wonderful and now I can relive part of the magic! LOVE your channel!!
For anyone who knows this show well, (or not), one might find it interesting at what can be gleaned from this recording... that all available male 'dance alternates' were performing in this particular performance. The first song; "Crunchy Granola Suite" sung by John De Luca, is missing the top harmony voice! Which indicates that many of the cast must have been out sick or injured for this performance.
The wonderful Laurent Giroux, (a 'dance alternate',) who did the opening introduction here, (normally done by Richard Korthaze,) was obviously on for Richard in the next number following "Crunchy" called "Mr. Bojangles". So, Laurent cannot be dancing or singing "Crunchy" here because he wouldn't have made the costume change.
Chet Walker, who was the 'Dance Captain' and also a 'dance alternate' like Laurent, who would normally have sung the "Crunchy" harmony if someone was out sick, is either dancing in the number and NOT singing, or he too, is preparing to perform in "Mr. Bojangles". We do see the divine Chet Walker performing the tap duet with John De Luca to the 'Piano solo' in the number; "Sing, Sing, Sing". Which gives an idea as to who did not make it in to work that day.

Ok..I love your info and seeing 'Dancin' on Broadway and the National Tour several times in SF I'm a bit obsessed with this show. It made me love dance even more. And seeing this clip is awesome. I have to ask especially knowing a lot of dance alternatives were in this performance that I notice Cynthia is doing the Ann Reinking track at the beginning of "Crunchy Granola Suite". I thought Ann's track left after the beginning. Did Cynthia then have to fill in for someone else or am I remembering wrong since she continues the whole number? Also, anyone know who was doing Sandahl's track in this clip? Fell in love with both Ann and Sandahl after seeing this show. First rate National Tour which included an amazing cast of Vicki Frederick, Sandahl Bergman, Charles Ward, Cynthia Onrubia, Timothy Scott, Hinton Battle, Gary Flannery, Valarie Pettiford, Barbara Yeager, Valerie-jean Miller, Bick Goss and others...great National Tour cast.

the 'alternate male dancers' were busy, although Cynthia Onrubia was not an 'alternate dancer'.
When Cynthia Onrubia went into the Broadway company after completing the 1st Nat. Tour, she was hired as a straight-up replacement (of Christine Colby,) in Vicki Frederick's original role/track( who, by the way, left the Broadway cast and did the tour with Cynthia). Then later, Onrubia took over most of Ann Reinking's role/track (via Gail Mae Ferguson).
(At this point during the Broadway run, role-responsibilities began to change and 'replacements' were no longer dancing the exact same dance track/parts as the original cast.)
Onrubia did perform all of Reinkings show except for "The Girl In The Dream Barre" (Act I), and "Trumpet" in 'Sing, Sing, Sing,". In the Act III-'America' section, instead of performing Reinking's; "When Johnny Comes Marching Home", Onrubia performed "Rally Around The Flag".
[Of her time performing in the 1st National Tour and the Broadway production of 'Dancin', Onrubia would dance and sing 4 different female tracks, having performed nearly every female part in the show. Except "Dixie" and the three dance segments previously listed.]
At the time of this video's creation, Onrubia's track was a combination of several original roles.
Accordingly, to answer your queries; Ann Reinking did originally dance all of 'Crunchy Granola Suite' as Onrubia does here. (Maybe Reinking was injured when you saw her? and/or did a partial?)
In this video; Sandahl Bergman's show was danced by Laurie Dawn Skinner/MaryAnn Neu.
"Crunchy" and "Calypso" is MaryAnn Neu, and "14 Feet" is Laurie Dawn Skinner (in the middle).
@@Bialikov Wow! Great info. I did see the Dancin' on Broadway in December of 78. Unfortunately, Ann was out that night and I can't remember who covered her Trumpet Solo..ugh. But saw the rest and fell in love with Sandahl. Ain't that typical for a gay boy. But she was so awesome. I did finally see Ann do the Trumpet Solo in a one-woman show she did at the Westwood Playhouse back in the 80's. Sad we don't have a video of that. Then the 1st National Tour came to SF and I saw the show 3 times. Vicki was doing Ann's track. Sandahl had taken over the Trombone Solo. And the rest of the cast was awesome! Including Cynthia. Wow. I think I saw Barbara Yeager do the Trumpet Solo one performance. As I said..this show made a big impact on me and the dancers in the show. PS..not to be nosy, but I saw a video of stage managers who talked about Ann's blue dress and the first time she was out the replacement wanted to wear the dress but it was forbidden.It became a big to--do...and the performer was refusing to go on until Bob intervened..is this story true? And yes, I'm a nerd who loves "Dancin' and these dancers.
Marvelous. How fascinating... you saw Dancin' in San Francisco... I believe, when it was playing at the Orpheum there, one of the performances in early October of 1979 had to be cancelled due to a sniper in the downtown area of the theater district... Market Street? As to Ann Reinkings blue dress and her "Trumpet" understudy. First of all, the Actors Union frowns on the sharing of any costume piece that is 'worn next to the skin'. It is "verboten",... against union rules. Also, every understudy is to be supplied with their own costume version for the roles they cover. Second, if there was a dispute about the 'sanctity' of the blue dress, it was probably due more to the fact that a specific copy for the understudy had not been budgeted or built yet. I can only speculate beyond that...your guess would be better than mine. The earliest covers in the original cast of Dancin' would have been; Sandahl Bergman for Reinkings 'Trumpet' and Linda Haberman for Vicki Fredericks 'Trombone'. After that, when Sandahl, Vicki, Charles Ward and Christopher Chadman, et al. left the Broadway cast to do the Touring production...roles and their covers or understudies changed.
P.S. Cynthia Onrubia was only 17 years old when you saw her in San Francisco on tour in Dancin'. She was born and grew up in NYC, but took her High School 'final exams' in her dressing room (while the Stage Manager served as her Proctor,) when they opened the Touring production of Dancin' in Chicago earlier that year in 1979.
My gosh this guy reworks and reworks. You can see “who’s got the pain” the rich man’s frug, so many reworks from Steam heat all the way to Chicago. It’s such a language. Beautiful and thank you for uploading it.
I read how one of the original dancers had to help because they had no recording of this show. He said muscle memory took over as he started dancing. This truly is a remarkable video! ❤
Imagine if this staging was on Broadway today, instead of the extensive reworkings made for the recent revival flop. (The orchestrations, for one thing sound much better here)
So interesting to see the 3 dancers hanging upside down at the end of Sing, Sing, Sing--saw the original production's national tour several times and don't remember this being a part of the ending (and it certainly wasn't a part of Fosse). So glad to see footage from original Broadway production--this with the recreations from Fosse and the extended excerpt of the patriotic section performed on a Bob Hope special, its great much of the show is preserved. And the original orchestra sounds great.
The tour had to remove the hanging finish because of safety issues that could not be eliminate as the show moved from theater to theater and insurance. I think Fosse removed it for reasons more to do with budget, hazard pay, and insurance.
The original orchestra was brilliant.

.....as well saw it back in the day.........now i'm still holding my wish to see the infamous Dream Barre number again. Did see it at a matinee, and i was thinking THIS is what they show on the matinee LOL. It was something else .....

The original show was totally sensational. Impossible to describe how thrilling it was. This is great to have, but the show was something else entirely. This looks very late in the run to me. The closet thing to the real experience is the DVD of 'Fosse' which retained some of these thrilling dances in high definition or close to it. Some of this dancing isn't up to scratch.

Is this video sped up are were the original numbers performed so much faster than the revivals years later. Incredible either way.
No speeding up, this should represent the actual speed of the performance at the time.

I saw the revival and wished I hadn't. The original production and the standard of the dancing was so superior unfortunately.
