  • "Fosse," the Broadway production that won the 1999 Tony for Best Musical, played a fall '98 tryout in L.A. under the title "Fosse: A Celebration in Song and Dance." Here is a number from L.A. that did not make it to Broadway, "Beat Me Daddy, Eight to the Bar," first seen in Fosse's 1986 show "Big Deal." 2019 Tony nominee Sergio Trujillo and Mark Calamia lead the "Fosse" cast here. After "Beat Me, Daddy," I've added (at 5:10) another number from "Fosse," "Dancin' Dan (Me and My Shadow)," which did make it to Broadway but I believe was omitted from the commercially released DVD of "Fosse." It's performed by Eugene Fleming, Kim Morgan Greene and Dana Moore.

Dear God, Dana Moore!! With huge respect to the immensely talented Eugene Fleming and Kim Morgan Greene, I cannot take my eyes off Ms Moore!

The best version of "Dancing Dan" was with Ben and Ann. They really should NOT have cut that from the DVD

I was fortunate enough to have seen the Pre-Broadway show in Boston MA, and I still have the program. It was three acts with two intermissions.

Legendary. One of my favorite Fosse pieces, I can't believe this would have been cut from Fosse (a show I saw at least 4 times when I was in my late teens-early 20s). Now in my 40s, saw Dancin' twice this week, and I almost cried seeing this incredible piece live on stage. I will always support a fellow leftie hitch kick!
And Dana Moore is always the greatest!

Saw "Dancin'" this week as well, and always fun to see this number come to life again.

I hear what Robert Lee is saying, but I have to view it in context. This was pre-Broadway. A little more rehearsal may have gotten the details worked out and the dancers into sync. Cilento and Davis had already been performing it a while when the Tony's came around. Of course, it may also have been cut because this number is physically a killer, with all the knee work. It was the first act finale in Big Deal, whereas here it's just another of many big numbers in the show.
As far as this clip is concerned, so much of the choreography is wasted and never seen because the number is so dimly lighted and the dancers are all in black. Too many cut-aways to the vocalist, too, especially at crucial parts of the dance sequences.

OMG!!! THANK YOU A MILLION TIMES!!! FOR POSTING THIS!! "Big Deal" as you know was Bob's last show. And during the 1986 Tony Awards they performed Beat Me Daddy Eight To The Bar. I still have it on VHS. I wished they would of left it in "Fosse" but I remember they had about 25 numbers already and I quess something had to be cut. You made me so happy by posting this!!!!

I am so glad you enjoyed this. Of course one can see the original '86 cast of "Big Deal" do the number on the Tony Awards, but I thought it might be interesting to see it recreated with a new company.

I wish they had kept this--I know it was in Toronto originally too (I believe Rich Kid's Rag from Little Me was briefly too). I can only imagine it was cut for being similar in some ways to Sing Sing Sing. Thanks for posting! Funny that Me and My Shadows was cut from the DVD of Fosse considering they performed it on a few talk shows when Fosse was in New York.

Dana Moore played the lead Frug dancer in Sweet Charity when the show closed she went over to A Chorus Line and played Sheila. All this in mid 80s

Glad they dropped it. Especially after seeing Cilento and Anthony do this. Lots of mugging here and hyper awareness of the audience. Best part of this was Eugene Fleming...Dancin' Dan with the Incomparable Dana Moore is great but not sure what the blonde was doing....

Would love to see any more footage you have of cut Fosse numbers. I wasn’t even born when the show first premiered on Broadway so I never was able to see it😂. I’ve heard from comments on this and loads of other videos that a lot of numbers were cut or swapped throughout its run so please post any other rare videos like this that you have. There’s this sense of ridicule towards the show amongst the Fosse community, claiming its not what he would have though was good enough but I really have a mad respect for what this show did with showing some previously lost numbers. Things like most of the numbers from Dancin’ (1978) wouldn’t have any surviving footage online if it weren’t for them being recreated for this show. Would love to see if there’s anything else from this show that wasn’t put on the DVD. Thanks for sharing this though so cool to see!!!

Thanks for posting this! Love the choreography and performances, but wish I could see them better. This is reminding me how misguided it is to costume everyone in black and have them dance on a black set. Sigh.

Fosse loved his minimalism! It worked in the theatre. There was plenty of back and side light to provide a 'rim' of light around the performers to separate them from the background. Obviously, that's not really going to be picked up in a bootleg video recording.

I'm sure that's Sergio Trujillo on the left of the two male dancers, but who is on the right? I believe I've seen him in every version of the show I've seen (a mere three), but I don't know his name. He does "Me and My Shadow" with Vereen on the DVD. Incredibly talented.

Wayne and Anthony have nothing to worry about. We were trained different in those days...that kind of amazing dancing is gone now. They are good but it's just not the same :( Fosse could be such a picky pain in the ass but in the end he was right and fabulous

    • @ADRHYN

I think that's why the number was cut, the two male dancers were sloppy (by Fosse Standards of course)

I am grateful to have stumbled across this. It’s too bad it was cut from the show. I can think of some numbers that could have been cut to make room for this. I’ve only seen this number from the Tony footage for “Big Deal” but that footage is so dark you can’t really see anything. As I remember, that was a criticism of “Big Deal” in particular. Everything was too dark. The producers begged Fosse to add lighting to it, but he wasn’t listening to anyone.
