Excellent video. It's all about the chase vehicle. All the other tutorials just show how to turn the trailer into the spot, but never mentioned anything about bringing the towing vehicle back inline. This is where all the confusion comes into play when you're new. You get the trailer in, but your tow vehicle is all crooked, and as you try to straighten it out, your trailer swings out of place, and the sweats start to come out, and the cussing starts. I've learned that as soon as you see the trailer going in the direction that you want, start to straighten out your tow vehicle slowly.

Ditto! I'm a wife who is now trailering on her own after joining a group called Sisters on the Fly. People say "follow the trailer" or "chase the trailer" and I'm like "what the heck, the trailer follows my truck!". Now I understand! Thank you.

Great video. I'm a truck driver also, so I was watching this video with "critical eyes"..nice job!! If I may, I would like to also suggest that new RVs go out and buy some cheap orange cones and take them to a wide open area to practice backing before going on a trip. When I got my CDL (trucker's license), we had 3 weeks of driving in a practice lot before they would take us on the road. Having the visual and then being able to actually do what we saw was a great way to sharpen the skills.

OMG, thank you so much for this. Very helpful. Pretty much a newbie for my travel trailer, and have backed into camp sites successfully all but one time. That time, I had to maneuver it in two different directions, two different turns. And there were people watching, they came out of their rv's to watch and make snide comments. luckily the gentleman next door to my site, offered to back it in for me. He did it beautifully, and then told me he was a professional truck driver. If felt somewhat better after that. I have to say, I didn't try to converse or make nice with those others who made the snide comments during our stay there.

“You’re good, you’re good...STOP!!!“ This is us! Love this video tutorial! I have never backed our unit (42+ feet) but this has given me the confidence. I have had wrong thinking about where to position when you approach the site. I always thought you should be in the middle of the road but you clearly showed that you should be hugging the site side. Tell your son thanks for letting you use his toys for props-great visual!

I happened across your video and I’m so happy I did. Leave it to a Canadian to get to the point and explain things clearly and simply. I’ve been trailering horses and my small RV for years, and I picked up some good tips today. Your graphics, toy truck and trailer, and gaming steering wheel, really helped visualize backing up trailers into narrow spots. Your explanations were clear and made a lot of sense. Thank you so much! Mercí‼️😊

This is the best back up video i have watched. We have a lower drive and just getting the trailer back in when home is just as stressful as the campsite! I now understand what i have been doing wrong. Thank you so much for sharing this info. Solo female here and I really want to learn to back in myself, but always appreciate anyone who volunteers to be a spotter.

I love this video-it was _exactly_ the kind of illustration I was looking for before my first backing. Thank you so much for illustrating it from the bird's eye view and speaking in detail about each of the steps. I especially appreciate the tips such as trying to pull in on the driver's side, or pull up and past the campsite before backing in. I really am much more confident to go out the first time thanks to this instructional video.

I thought this was pretty lame at first, but I really like seeing it from a 'birdseye' point of view. One thing you might put in is about OVERCORRECTION. After putting my trailer in the driveway by myself (and only having taken the trailer out a couple of times), at the end of my ordeal, I finally realized my problem was overcorrecting. It is really hard to hold yourself back from turning that wheel all the way the other direction when the trailer is going wrong. You did mention slow, small turns, but it might be good to emphasize that a bit in there somewhere. Newbies, like me, tend to freak out and overcorrect, haha!

One thing I would add (being I have very limited experience).
Is, if you're you're going to tow something. "Come back" to this video or any other instruction video that you're comfortable with. And refresh your memory the day before or just before you're heading out. To keep the tactics fresh in your mind. Instead of watching the video weeks/months/years before trying to maneuver a trailer. At least, that's what I'm going to do most of the time - Refresh.
    Great instructional video...👍

I'm not a professional at doing this, but I have trained dogs. Dogs do not understand conversations and sentences. That's gibberish to them. They understand single words and hand signals that are taught to them. Drivers/backers do much better when the spotter (with prior agreements) gives one word requests and/or various hand signals. Also, to be a good spotter, one must be moving as the trailer is moving, so as to not be out of position. I recently spotted a guy who was backing in a 35 foot 5th wheel into a space, where the "street" was very narrow. He had a back spotter, so I volunteered to be his front spotter, watching the distance from the front of his huge truck to obstacles across the "street" that he wanted to avoid. I darted from one side of the front to the other side of the front of his truck, depending upon which way he was turning at a given moment. I held both hands up into a position that was like a football referee motioning that a field goal is good. I continually moved my open, flat hands either closer or farther apart to show the driver how close he was to his closest obstacle. I didn't have to yell and scream. Just hand distance signals and being in continual proper position.
I also seems to me that (I don't know for sure) single axle trailers are much more sensitive to turns than double axle trailers, so that steering wheel movements should be more subtle. Can someone who's handled both single and double axles comment on this for me?

Best illustration i have seen to date! Excuses not needed for the toys because they are a scale model of what is actually happening! Out of desperation, i downloaded a game called "Cargo Parking". It requires you to back a farm tractor with trailer into a highlighted spot. You turn the steering wheel with your finger and you only have backward and forward gear. I think what makes backing up so hard is the point of rotation (the truck-trailer hitch point) is moving. If it was stationary, it would be just like drawing a circle with a compass. but with the point of rotation moving, the back of your trailer is actually drawing an ellipsoid, which is quite hard to picture. I am a newby and cant back my 42' fiver even into my driveway, but i always look at the trailer tires. the path the trailer tires are going is the exact path the trailer, or at least the "center" of the trailer is going. Thanks again for the detailed, on point, analysis!!

Great video! I hate some that simply say do the opposite of what you normally do when backing with a trailer. I don't really need to think when just backing up a vehicle. So the "do the opposite" means I first have to think of what the normal is! To much thinking in the heat of the moment. The way you advise is much simpler! The advise on a hard turn to "chase" the RV around sounds great. Can't wait to try it!

I usually don’t have trouble backing into campsites. However, last weekend we had a campsite where there was a fairly narrow road, and overhanging branches on both sides of the road and at the entrance of the campsite . Therefore, there was a very small window of opening into the campsite and I put some scratches on my camper. Sometimes the campground needs to do a little more maintenance to ease the difficulties for the campers. They had rules that we could not trim them ourselves.

Excellent!! Best video by far. At beginning, I thought, "oh, no, you can't show without being in vehicle". But, bird's eye view was the best!

Thank you for making this video. I own a 21.5 ft TT that I simply don't know how to back in. I've been booking pull thru sites just because I don't know how to back the TT in. I'll give this a try in a while at camp.

Thank you for this video, it is so helpful and the best on the internet. I just got my pop up last summer and I still stink at backing it up, this will help me so much.

Thank you! Lots of common sense, here. Especially the last one. Lots of new tips, too. You are saying the opposite that others are saying though, that the shorter trailers are easier. Everyone else say the short ones are harder! I can understand the quicker response time, but that doesn't seem like it would be harder, just something to be mindful of. Thanks for saying what you do. Can't wait to get our pop up, and get camping!

Great Video. I loved your level of detail. I have not perfected steering wheel CHASE on the reverse back process. As 1st time solo owner/backup driver I have towed for 2 yrs now with 14 ft Aliner Ascape camper that jack knifes quickly.
As a solo camper, some nights my mind shuts down after a long drive just as I begin to back into my camp site. To the campers already setup and watching, I say "I have arrived for your nightly entertainment". And everyone gets to laugh along with me.
As a visual reminder I put a diagram on my car's sun visor with wheel position and which way the camper will back.
If you ever redo this video, place your toy steering wheel on the table in front of the toy truck/camper and rotate the toy steering wheel to give the user a birds eye view.
    Thank you for this video!

Excellent! We collect our first caravan in a week and our driveway at home is much like the second scenario with the angled access. I had been wondering which direction would make the better approach and your explanation has confirmed my hunch. We’re in the UK, with a right-hand drive tow car, so approach from the right - as viewed in your diagram - seems the more sensible approach, it just means the spotter, my wife most of the time, will need to alert me to any oncoming vehicles that may try to pass on my left as I swing out. Although we’re on a residential street, there’s no shortage of impatient drivers who lack the mental agility to see what’s happening several metres ahead and will insist on squeezing through. However, thanks to videos like this, I’m now actually more excited than nervous about putting reversing theory into practice. Happy days!👍

I learned a similar but easier to understand method in truck drivers school. Grip the top of your steering wheel at the top with both hands; your thumbs pointing towards each other. Look in your drivers' side mirror. To make the trailer move out of the mirror push your right thumb towards the mirror, "pushing" the trailer out of the mirror. To make your trailer move into the mirror pull your right thumb in, "pulling" the trailer into view. This method is used by big rig drivers all over the world. Happy backing! And yes you're correct; never back up on your blind side but if you have to be prepared to step out a few times to check your positioning.

I was always told to grab the bottom of the steering wheel and move your hand the direction you want the trailer to go. Helps me if i get myself all mixed up going into tight areas.

U appreciate you explaining "why" you do the steps. When I understand why...It all makes sense.

I can hear my dad’s voice when listening to you. Excellent video. it’s been nine years since I pulled our fifth wheel but I followed almost all of your advice. If my husband was along we used walkie-talkies when backing into our spot. I wasn’t yelling and he could clearly hear me, because sometimes I was directly behind the camper watching for trees or branches.thank you for posting it in the Girl Camper fb group.
