    Could the designers have ever imagined at the time that they were creating absolute masterpieces. If you were cruising down Hollywood Blvd. or 5th Ave. what modern vehicle could surpass it in terms of styling and elegance? Nothing! The detail and statement it makes is extraordinary. To create a motorworks like that today would cost you a quarter of a million dollars. It is a tour de force of motoring perfection. Despite not having a single computer in its make up it is among the high water marks of human motoring achievment. No Hollywood celebrity or historical figure could be too big to diminished by being dropped off at the Oscars in this motor coach. Thank you Charles for finding these pearls of the mid 20th century.

      Absolutely they were. To each and every one, theirs' was the masterpiece of masterpieces.
      A long gone era sadly. Now it's all about the bean counters and who can turn a buck the quickest.

    7:12 Love those *CATHEDRAL* tail-lights. Those and the Frenched headlights (1:28) makes this Lincoln look much like a 55/56 Packard. It's just too bad you were so depressed. :)

    Never have I seen such passion for classic cars, mid-century design and vibe while also being able to capture and hold interest (some of these classic car reviewers get too bogged down in history and production background). Never mind a detailed review on all the "quirks and features".

    Not "finny". Not overly "flashy". By no means too "showy"... But the '56 Lincoln cars were probably some of the most EXEMPLARY of the Mid Century automotive designs.... Absolutely BEAUTIFULLY EXECUTED.

    I had a 1960 Buick Invicta Custom, White, red and white bucket seats, padded console, A/C it was loaded. Picked it up from a Buick dealer on the service lot 1966. Needed a valve job, customer bought a new Buick. Bought it for 500 dollars, towed it to the shop where I worked. Wonderful car. Great driving, smooth, comfortable, drove it from Vegas to Ca border at 120 to 125, still smooth. Sold it 3 years later. All I can say is: I want it back!!!!! The body sculpting is awesome on the 60. Oh, did I say? I WANT IT BACK!!!! at 74 years old, it's still my favorite car.

    56 was a great styling year for premium cars in the USA. I am a big fan of vertical, cathedral style taillights so score points for Packard and Lincoln. This is my favorite but the Cadillac and Imperial were beautiful, too. Just a great looking car.inside and out.

    This car is perhups the most beautiful car made ever. It is perfect in all it corners, the color is unbettereable, interior is woof, wheels cups, griil, tail lights, it's a toy for adults. 1956 was the best year of American cars for me. 1956 Chrysler is amazing, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Lincoln, Thunderbird, Oldsmobile, DeSoto, Nash, Dodge, Ambassador, Hudson, Pontiac, Plymouth. American cars are my passion.
    Greetings from 🇨🇱

    Park that beauty next to a 56' Cadillac and you'll see how advanced Lincolns styling was. Where the Caddy's high belt line and bulbous looks along with those outrageous dagmars and excessive chrome, the Lincoln is low slung, streamlined and void of extreme bright work. Lincoln was no doubt way ahead in the styling game at the time.

    1:08...Don't tell me that the original through the bumper exhaust has been retained. As a kid in the '60's, I remember seeing so many 1950's cars with rotted out rear bumpers because of that.

  • @garytraynor2921
    @garytraynor2921 2 роки тому +1

    Re: the back up lights. I read that the idea behind them was even though they were small the idea was the light would reflect off the bumper and give plenty of light. Evidently some owners didn’t agree with this set up.
    Love the car. Plus a back seat speaker in a convertible...not very common.

    Did you all notice the location of the back up lights? They were hidden up underneath there, that lip of the trunk if you will. This was so they wouldn’t clutter the rear end and make it look as sleek as possible. This feature was even mentioned in some of the advertisements...the “hidden back up lights”. The next year in 57 the back up lights were gigantic and pretty much matched the parking light lenses in the front.

    I love midcentury modern. I hate kitsch that that car is the epitome of kitsch. The people who would have driven that car when new would have been new money. One wonder's why Ford just a few years later greatly toned down the kitsch factor in the 1960's models.

    These still had trunk mounted AC units blowing up clear tubes into ceiling ducts and vents, so no AC on convertibles. Of course if you don't mind being a bit revisionist you could have a modern skinny underdash unit put in. I would. A lot of car designers and owners in the mid fifties would have been in WWII and/or the Korean War. I think this is why you see the aircraft style levers showing up on several cars, not to mention of course Cadillac P 38 fins.
    I saw a salmon pink two door hardtop Premiere cruising in the Coney Island Mermaid parade with all that no doubt rechromed chrome glistening in the sun. It was a mid-50's vision.

    • @xaenon
      @xaenon 4 роки тому

      Nah. If you're rockin a droptop, A/C is blasphemy. And the 'rocket/aircraft' type styling was inspired by our real-life jet age / space age spinning up. Everyone's vision of the future included glittering rocket ships and jets, a colony on the moon, flying (and likely atomic-powered) cars, and to some degree, robots to free us from tedious labor... all anticipated in the 1980s or 1990s.
      Huh. As they say, the future ain't what it used to be.
