6/29/23 update!
I can't believe this little video is still going and GOING! Guys, thanks for watching - it means a lot. I've 500+ videos but this was one of the first and I didn't even originally make it for UA-cam. I know it looks like it was made in 1984 instead of 2012, believe me. But the content is still very cool.
Please join me on Saturdays at 5pm ET for my free UA-cam Guitar Q+A livestream. Just text your questions about learning the guitar and I'll answer as many as I can in about 2 hours. If you can't make it on Saturdays, the livestreams are available to watch afterwards and soon I'll be making them into podcasts as well. I look forward to your questions!
And if you're serious about getting better at the guitar, check out my website www.song-bike.com. Lots of great content and PDFs - stuff NOT AVAILABLE on UA-cam.
I do online lessons too. Email me : info@song-bike.com
All you strummers out there can kick your playing up a notch QUICKLY with these bass note runs! Whether you're gonna be picking in a bluegrass band or writing indie rock folk tunes this is how you add an advanced sound to your rhythm guitar parts. You'll recognize the riffs and master them quickly with this video. Enjoy !
Here it is near the end of 2020, and your lesson is still helping a middle-aged newbie get a better grip on his guitar. I love your patient approach. Thank you!
Finally , a teacher that is gentle,slow so we ' get it ' !!!!!
Thank you so MUCH ! Your tutorials are fun to watch and listen .
YOU,SIR, are a true MASTER !!!!!!!
I appreciate that, Joseph!

You are, by far, the best rythem guitar teacher I've encounted in over 50 years of searching. Thank you.
I hope your subscribers appreciate the pearls of wisdom you provide.
I got questions but not right now.
That squeeze the pic tip made a surprisingly significant difference. Ty
That's awesome, Romallie31! By the way, if the pick slides around in your fingers as you play, just hold it 1% tighter. You still want to maintain a light grip on the pick in general. Please join me Saturdays at 5pm ET for my free UA-cam livestream Q+A all about learning, playing, practicing, and caring for guitars. You can text me your questions LIVE ! Sat. 5pm ET on my UA-cam channel ua-cam.com/users/jkehew1. See you there ! (you can also watch later on my UA-cam channel and soon it will be available as a podcast.) Please subscribe to my UA-cam channel too!

Great Lesson Jonathan!!! GOD Bless you and your Family😍🎸🎸🎸
You are such a good teacher!
You are a great teacher. I know because I teach as well (dance, not guitar). Your talking has a purpose and allows insight and time for reflection. Well done.
Hey Jerry, thanks! More videos coming soon...
Very valuable variation of chordplay.
Indeed fine instruction from an excellent educator.
I've been looking for this tutorial content for awhile. Thanks for being such a great teacher!
Man, that's good teaching.!!!! nice and slow.!! and it sticks!....
Thanks Stephen!
just joined a few days ago, your are awsome, i have learned so much from you in the last two days .i have been on many you tube sites. you are the best yet. keep up the great teaching, ill stick with you forever RON
Thank you very much. I look forward to my practice with you . You have such an encouraging style and manner. Having some live music in my life adds a balance for me.
I've been playing guitar for about a year and a half. As soon as I learned a few chords and lost my mind. I've always favored the alternating bass strums and just kept willing them to happen and failing miserably for about 2 months for about 10 to 30 minutes a day until one day it happened. Since then it's a no brainier, but I couldn't tell you how to do it.
That being said, you do a great job of explaining things. Can't wait to see more videos.
Thank u so much from the beginner of Indonesia. Country music so nice
Great lesson Jonathan, thank you. I look forward to viewing and learning from your other videos, again, thank you.

I have been playing guitar for a long time so my major and minor chords are pretty solid, but I'm mainly self-taught, and have seldom jammed with players. You are doing a fantastic job, unquestionably. I’m a teachers teacher, I teach how to teach, so here it is, how do we think people learn? What we might know, is not necessarily how people learn, it’s what we think? Be in touch, give me or call or drop a line so, so we might talk about such things.
You do great things.

Love the mountain dulcimer ! have you ever seen my friend Rosamond Campbell's dulcimer books published by Mel Bay?
Yes. I have "Arranging a Duet for Mountain Dulcimer in the Chord Melody Style." I am not a good player, but I love the sound of the mountain dulcimer and acoustic instruments in general. I have never met your friend, but she must be an amazing lady. I see her name mentioned on a lot of web sites related to mountain dulcimer and her books are recommended and or sold by many of these websites also.
Such a wonderful teacher. I have such a hard time comprehending things like this, and everyone I asked to help me just couldn’t explain exactly what they were doing. But this has been so valuable
I'm so glad, Benjamin!

Anything with the classic style strumming with rock and country flavor any song with that beat or plays through like say peaceful easy feeling by the eagles. So sad that type of musical arrangement died we need to keep it alive
Just a quick comment on your G finger structure.
I'm self taught in the days before the internet. The chord book I bought 40 years ago used the Index, middle and pinky to form the G so that's the way I learned it. I took a 20 year break from the guitar while the kids were growing up. 5 years ago I pulled it out and started playing again. It was then that I began experimenting with walking between chords. I found that not having my index finger free was an encumberment. Even after 5 years I still find myself slipping back to the fingering the way I originally learned it.
I'm now teaching my niece to play and giving her the benefit of what I wish I would have know 40 years ago. You're spot on with the free index finger advice. Now if I could just make that the norm. Lol.
Thanks for the feedback, CP!

You seem like a very nice person who takes his time learning people playing guitar properly. I think your students must be very happy guitar players ;) .
I'm a lead guitarist and I'm in a rock band (grunge/stoner/alternative/cowpunk/folk ...) now, but we don't have a bass player yet, and I thought to learn more about bass runs, wich I can play to cover up for the bassist, until we have a real bass player who plays the bass notes and those bass runs ;)
+Negative Creep Thanks for watching, NC ! Everybody needs a bass player. I know what you're going through. Please check out my new guitar lessons website www.song-bike.com and 'like' my facebook page: facebook.com/mysongbike.

Loved your rhythm guitar lesson. Do you have a rhythm guitar course that can take me from beginner to be able to actually play rhythm guitar?
+Wayne Lincourt Hi Wayne, thanks for watching this video. My UA-cam videos aren't organized (yet) so you'll have to sort through them to create your own rhythm guitar course. BUT.... my website www.song-bike.com does have very specific rhythm guitar sections covering a variety of Strum Patterns (with a pick) and Finger-picking Patterns. These videos are definitely aimed at guitarists with only a little experience and I recommend them highly. The website costs $9.95 / month. Please give it a try and let me know what you think !
Great video. I have watched other videos on Bass Note Runs but they always go too fast. Very good lesson. Thanks for posting.

This is exactly what I've been searching for. I am disappointed that you didn't show us how to connect other chords. I can go from G to C an from C to F but can't figure out the run between all the other chords. Thanks a lot.

I learned to play guitar on my own from books forty years ago. Unfortunately, I had nobody else to play with, so I learned fingerpicking, which was slow and difficult. I never learned the basic rhythm guitar stuff that you taught in these early videos (I've only just discovered you, so I haven't seen your later videos yet). I wish I had had a teacher like you and other people to play with when I started out. I would have enjoyed it so much more. You are an excellent teacher, the best I've seen on UA-cam.

Ha!! In england united kingdom, we say when someone talks alot "you can talk for england" but your american so i suppose you "could say you can talk for america":)) great tutorials!! Im 2years in and still struggling with paul mcartneys blackbird ant tips??
Hi daz, I would work on the 2 hands separately for Blackbird. The left hand "chords" are so odd for most of us. You really need to repeat them a LOT in sequence, so do it without even worrying about plucking the strings with your right hand. The left hand has the bigger challenge I think. It IS do-able though.
I scoured the web and amazon books looking for instructions of this nature. I was beginning to think it to be a secret tightly locked in Fort Knox. Believe me when I say THANK YOU for letting me in with the in crowd. I now can sing and play without sounding like a rank beginner in a kindergarten Big Hugs for letting me into the secret club.
Thanks for watching , WW ! I'm so glad to be part of your progress. Check out my website for more: www.song-bike.com. Please subscribe - I'm on my way to 100k subscribers !
Thanks for the advice learning so much easier when you enjoy what your doing:) but i would never say blacbird was a beginners song to learn. Not you but other people have mentioned its a beginner song to learn i have to disagree this is quite tough. Just shows what a genious paul mccartney is:))
I agree that Blackbird is not a Beginner's level tune. In the world of fingerpicking there are easier tunes to master for sure. But there are so many songs that are much more difficult so Blackbird is kind of suck in the middle. Students sure love Blackbird though !
Question: Suppose there are two guitar players, one rhythm and one lead. The rhythm is doing the G to C to G boom chica strum, and the lead player is jamming on the G pentatonic. Does the lead need to switch to the C pentatonic when the rhythm player moves to the C chord, or can the lead stay on the G pentatonic the whole time over both chords? What if the rhythm player adds the D chord? Can the lead still only jam on the G pentatonic? Thanks very much for the videos! I am learning a ton!
taconight2night good question ! you can stay on the G pentatonic the whole time. even during the d chord. rock on !
Great! Thanks very much for the response!
Excellent teaching. You should teach other instructors how to teach.
