I thought BMW's were built tough? At their price point there door panels should be much thicker and able to withstand a few fender benders. Also, a BMW should NEVER rust. I've lost all faith in BMW. I almost bought a 7 series but didn't and, sooo glad I didn't. I went with Lexus instead, ...best decision I ever made. Build quality is superior.
Any german made car is an endless money pit. Over-engineered with poor build quality. And way overpriced for what they are. The ones actually made in Germany have better quality control but still not great in the long run unless you're willing to empty your pockets.
As someone who works on resto-mods, and cars from 50s-early - 2000s this one will be simple. Not even that bad. Anyone who says differently hasn’t rebuilt a full frame off resto. I have more hours into rust repair on a older Monte Carlo t top SS, than it’ll cost you to repair this whole bmw. Currently have a few bmw m series from 80/2006. Cool to see them being restored!

I bought a 2001 e39 530i for £900 a few years ago.for a UK car it was immaculate, green with cream leather, full services, the spare key was still in its bag, had 2 valet keys, 4 brand new tyres, Having an inspection revealed it had a 1.6 Honda engine. even the garage couldn't figure how or why. I had the car seized cos of the previous owner still being an owner. turned out she used it to move drugs for years. The car was so nice and even sounded and drove like an inline 6
Really just depends on what you paid for it though, the right price for a car that needs a few things can be met. Whatever this BMW cost for you to purchase it was too much
Word to the people stop buying pos, I work at a bmw shop and see it everyday, only buy old 3 series, any 5 or 7 series will be double what you paid for it in maintenance. It’s not a civic you should expect this when spending less than 4k, car was originally 40k brand new, obviously if the car has depreciated almost 100% it’s crap, any 3 series bmw with good maintenance and in decent shape is worth atleast 3-4k, don’t get fooled buy a good one and it’ll return the favor :)

For E36’s in general, even 10 years ago, I always thought E36’s were a “Little Junky”. ESPECIALLY the interior parts, they just don’t hold up over time. 🤔🤔🤔
Got a 2001 530i project right now it runs and drives good had to put brakes and rotors all the way around coolant reservoir. Needs passenger front fender. Will be doing that soon as well as headers and drilled/slotted rotors and some wheels to dress is up a bit
in Poland this is a good shape, so much people took e36 for prokect cars because it was cheap rwd car and most of e36's are rusty and broken af so this is shape that will be good for projects
When I see junk crap like that on a car I either don't bother, or I treat the deal like a complete project like you have. All that Amazon / eBay crap has to go, along with repairing the other issues.

I bought a car with maxspeeding coils and get that shit out NOW. Mine literally blew (as in they started leaking when I wrenched on it) trying to adjust them because the fender was cutting the tire. I can’t believe it’s even legal to put those hunks off shit on a car
Diff is probably bad. That rust probably indicates the subframe is probably ripping out of the body, same with the rear shock towers. Bad trans and an end-of-life miles? This is gonna get costly, my friend. This POS makes mine look like a showroom car. Good luck! Sincerely, E36 owner.
Let me guess: the car is going to be stripped down to the frame. Sand, bodywork, paint. The frame is going to be a donor car for a salvage e36 M3 in nicer condition with a ruined body chassis. The parts stripped off the 323is will help make the restoration complete if extra parts are needed. The 323is / 325is / M3 run pretty much same specifications. Afterwards, the M3 body shell and 323is parts will be sold cheaply for salvage / scrap to help with the costs of the restoration.
Listen man I don't want to get you down- but this is not worth saving, you should enjoy it as is. If you paid low enough, flip it for more even. Had this been an m3 or something ok, but the truth is a lower trim e36 is a dime a dozen and not worth a whole lot even now. That things going to need thousands to get right. Thousands. You should plan on enjoying it the way it is because when it's all said and done you'd be into it for twice it's value, at least.
I hate to sound negative but this was a huge mistake in my opinion. This car is so beat up that it's basically a money/ time pit. If that doesn't bother you then happy days but if it does......many sleepless nights ahead.

One of my last cars was an e46, I paid 500 for it with like 160k and no problems to speak of. Only got rid of it because I wrote it off.
