Great channel. Question for you... which side of duvetyne is fire resistant? I noticed one side is kind of fuzzy and the other one is just flat. Distributors' websites say it's flame retardant but which side should be used to face the heat source?
Bit of a weird thing to add, but i just want to say thank you. Im working on a skirt/hakama for a forge so I can have some airflow while i work on hot metal, and my seamstress recommended douvetyne. I really appreciate the big bold "DO NOT GET DOUVYNE WET" literally saved my balls bro
Visqueen(Blackout plastic sheeting) is an affordable alternative option to duvetyne. Although not suitable for windy days. I made the mistake of trying to wash duvetyne in the past. It becomes super brittle and practically falls apart. Luckily it was scrap pieces to begin with so no loss there but there was a shoot I was on that had a 100x100ft piece destroyed by rain. On that note, insurance would be a terrific topic to cover! :P
I really appreciate what you are doing with these videos. For those of us who need grip/electric gear but don't have a grip/electric rental house nearby, where would one look to buy these tools? I know B&h has somethings, but is there a more grip/electric centered online store?
Thanks voor the advice on water part, I have a shoot coming up and I planned to throw a 15x6 meter on the roof no matter the weather conditions, I'll look for a better solution
I'm glad your back. I am getting ready to shoot a series for my channel called Get A Grip. The show will cover grip, lighting and camera support for smaller productions. It will not be for those who are going to be working on big Hollywood type sets. Much of the info is like your show. If you have any tips for me on how to foster relationships with manufactures would be helpful. Thanks again
DIYCameraGuy honestly I've just been really lucky. I've tweeted Matthews a few times just expressing my love for their company and they just kind of offered the shirt and Mafer. Cool peeps over there.
I'v bought a lot of stuff from rental houses. It is ruff but does the job. I have been trying to organize how to tackle an overview of grip equipment. I am getting close but it is such a complicated subject to cover.
DIYCameraGuy yea that's kind of how I had the idea to do the show because the list of equipment just goes on and on. I will say this tho, most people will love you if you start with c-stands. It's a request I get all the time but I'm saving it for a later ep. Even though I have 7 of them sitting in my garage right now haha
We once had to black out an entire house. And by the time we started shooting it was dark outside. I’m sure this has happen to other crews out there haha.
Here in the UK they call it 'bolton'. It can also be called 'commando cloth'. There are actually different thicknesses available. www.rosebrand.com/shop/results.aspx?keywords=duvetyne
Pause the video and look closely at the examples he gives. Basically it's nothing more than using clips to attach the material to whatever unit you're using. Cut it longer than you need and roll it up till you get the effect you're looking for. If you want to be super neat, you can staple bits of batten to the bottom roll it up as much as you need and use 'binder clips' (foldback or bulldog) to secure it. You can prep these ahead of time measure to kino flo's etc. and save re-use them. You can also use black wrap.
Christian Ruppelt sorry man, where you located and do you have any retailers where you are that I can order through so that I can open up my range a little. The shipping costs outside of the US are murder which is the only reason I have to do it like this.
No worries man! I’m not here for the give aways. I "just" appreciate your content! But to answer your question: Big dealers in Germany i know: videodata.de bpm-media.de and mbf.de Another but one for mostly photo-equipment is eyc.de - but they do sponsorships as far as I know.
+Grip Tips you can always just order from amazon.de and just put language to english. I'm from the netherlands so check out cameranu.nl for netherlands and belgium
Love today's episode !!! Well, technically it's last years episode but I'm watching it again..... you seem like you must be Ryan Connolly's brother or cousin..... actually I think you do a little better job, so I'm not sure why you don't have 1 million subscribers. I guess grip tips have less demand than film making tips.
Metin Y. Hey, another said the same below. Do you have a shop around Europe I could order from for future giveaways? The only reason it's USA only is that shipping is absolute murder
hey, I am from the Netherlands. only grip website I know here is www.bbplight.nl/ which may be helpful for future giveaways. besides, I am sure that there are other retailers around europe providing better price/service (possibly in germany) but must be searched. I like your videos, keep them up!

Ouch! A single 100 x 100 foot piece. Good luck folding and unfolding that beast.
Yey! Love this channel! Can you show us different ways on how to skirt? And a way how to produce haze/fog without a machine? Any DIY hack 😁
Any clue as to what Water Solids might be? Heard of Duvetyne before but not Water Solids. Maybe a picture might help! Thanks!
you ever find out?
Taken purely from context, I believe it is black material that is water resistant. Also, google Water Solids grip haha first result!

MattAlan01 I try to provide links in the description but there's no real one stop shop. Modern studio equipment is a pretty neat place tho
www.filmtools.com
Any tips on cleaning it? I've got some duvetyne I'm cleaning with a lint roller but it's stubborn.
same here
Stoked your back, love the video's!
What are water solids compared to duvetyne?

I already have a lot of gear but its have to justify buying gear just to review it for the channel. Maybe when things take off a bit.
DIYCameraGuy oh yea, I'm in the same boat. I only buy things I think will make my money back and then some. Everything else gets rented

Does it have any acoustic benefit? Is 8oz enough?
Mmmmmmm ish. It’s definitely not foam or packing blankets.
Ja, ja, ja... Hoy mean "No es bueno"... Jajaja!!! I love this Chanel... es Muy bueno!!!
Awesome. Keep going man, big fan.

Is there other names for the duvatyne? In my country I find hard to somebody to know what duvatyne is :(
ForeverFire *duvetyne, haha jk. What country are you in?
I'm from Perú, Latin America :(
Here in the UK they call it 'bolton'. It can also be called 'commando cloth'. There are actually different thicknesses available. www.rosebrand.com/shop/results.aspx?keywords=duvetyne
we also use borniol, the word is french and the fabric is much heavier.
In the netherlands it's 'zwartdoek', basically 'blackcloth' :p
I've also heard it be called "Duve," obviously short for Duvetyne.
Skirting! I would love to see a video on that!

Why would one choose this over command cloth?
shut the fuck up
Nice video. Shame that the give away is only for US residents … ;)
