I'm glad y'all laughed at the "Rusty, stop playing with the dog" scene. That is the one that I always remember from this movie, because it makes me laugh every time.
Aunt Edna was played by comedy legend Imogene Coca. She was usually partnered with Sid Cesar in early television. She won the second ever female comedy lead Emmy award.
She suffered a stroke early into shooting and nearly had to be replaced but everyone involved with the production really wanted her and gave her a second chance. She bounced back and was able to make it through, relearning all of her lines and even improvising several scenes including taking a bite out of here sandwich AFTER learning that the dog had peed on it. She was a real pro. The original script had more scenes with her but in consideration of her health they decided to cut a few of them out. RIP Imogene.
Did you guys know that the first "Rusty" from this first Vacation movie is actor Anthony Michael Hall from the famous teen movie, "The Breakfast Club", and "Weird Science"? Two classic films that you two have GOT to see (if you haven't already, that is).
Almost at 20K before the end of 2023, let alone April, 2024. And glad to see Cam graduated college on the Patreon. Here’s to 2024 and even more great reactions from you guys.
16:48 to our hosts and other deeply saddened people I'm happy to tell you that no dog was actually tied to the bumper. there was no scene shot of the car dragging the real (or fake.) dog down the highway. it was only implied. I repeat, no dog was actually harmed for this movie.
This movie was based upon a National Lampoon Magazine short story called 'Vacation 58' written by John Hughes about a family of five - Dad, Mom, two Daughters and a Son (who gives us the Narration)called the Briswolds (not Griswolds) going on a hellish cross country trip to Disney Land, where nothing but trouble stalks them mile after mile till the get to Disney Land only to find it closed, at this point the mother states there is no God, because if there was they wouln't have been punished every inch of the way for nothing. The Dad buys a real gun, takes a map to the stars homes at gun point and vaults over the wall of Walts house killing attack dogs and shooting Walt in the leg before being caught. So this is a sanitised, far less dark version of a story wrote in 1979 that I read about four years later. Regarding the dog dying, that was put in because it is a bad thing that has been known to happen. Lastly about the "Succubus" - Christy Brinkley was a famous model at the time, they wanted to show how crazy a person can get when they taste that extra bit of freedom, of Clark getting out his comfort zone, as you get into this franchise you will see that she is a running gag that will pay off very well in a future sequel.
Beyond those mentioned below, two big names to point out: Eugene Levy (of SCTV, the AMERICAN PIE movies and SCHITT'S CREEK, amongst dozens of other things) as the car salesman; and the late, great Imogene Coca (Aunt Edna) who you won't know but was hugely important for women in TV comedy as the core woman cast member of Sid Caesar's gargantuan YOUR SHOW OF SHOWS, which got ratings even the biggest shows now would drool over. From YOUR SHOW OF SHOWS, you get the likes of Mel Brooks and Carl Reiner, so much of what we now know as comedy today.
When I saw this, I and the rest of the audience were howling at the dog/cop scene - the whole point was the macho cop was taking it so hard. Generational differences I guess.
Nearly two score years ago, this was broadcast on prime time CBS, and it became one of the features I recorded on one of the first half-dozen blank videocassettes I ever owned (so long ago that each cassette came in a sturdy plastic box with a snap-open lid). And it still plays! Good job, gentlemen, on a reaction to a feature almost impossible to go wrong with. My thanks for letting me tag along - and as a practical expression of gratitude, I herewith announce a long-deferred subscription (consider it a holiday gift). Keep on enjoying yourselves, and I'll almost certainly enjoy you too. "Succubus". Nicely played. 😁
Nice to see Cameron & Isaiah again! 🫎 The wonderful Harold Ramis directed this one. I also love that *Jane* *Krakowski* got her start here as 'cousin Vicki'.
@@garethmorgan8326 It's funny you mentioned that, Gareth... for all the times I've watched this movie over the years, during *this* reaction video is the first time I noticed it was Harold. 🍻
I'd say it's great that you guys feel that way about adultery and animal cruelty, however I feel the same way about both topics, and I still found both parts hilarious. So I definitely believe that your generation being "softer", has everything to do with it. I'm 43, and grew up with this movie, and there was just a more free attitude towards comedy back then. Like I said, I love dogs and I've never cheated, and absolutely despise people who mistreat animals and/or their partners' trust, but I still laughed at the comedic take, on both issues in this movie.
Eugene levy is the car salesman, he’s a comedy legend and was more recently in schitts creek with his son Dan and daughter Sarah. The blonde in the Ferrari is Christie Brinkley who was a huge supermodel in the 80’s and she was once married to Billy Joel and she’s the mother of his oldest child.
Yeah are you guys serious? No one (apart from Edna maybe) cared about the f dog!!!....plus it's a comedy - you're not supposed to take it seriously....
My family did this in 1979...but Disneyland was open. I was 7, too short to ride Space Mountain/Matterhorn so i spent most of my trip waiting at the exit for my 5 older family to ride over and over. I spent maybe 4 hours waiting for them. The first time, my older brother, 8, chickened out and my mom had to bring him to the entrance. She had to go back and wait again.
Christmas Vacation is absolutely inferior to the original. Christmas Vacation is more sentimental, which is maybe why people react to it more favorably, but the dark tone of the first film was more in line with National Lampoon, the magazine, which birthed this (it's based on a short story by John Hughes, as is Christmas Vacation) and Animal House.
@@pleutron They're both inferior. The original Christmas Vacation story in National Lampoon was dark. Hughes at that point injected sentiment into his scripts, and this was what for me, makes this weaker than the original.
Man, I get that the lady in the car"Chrsitie Brinkley" is fine but he is married to his wife is also a bombshell and very sweet. I undertsnd marriages get dull and you want something new but damn
In 1977 my aunt and uncle drove my cousin and I from Connecticut to Disney in a yellow station wagon. We were 16 and 17. It was a DISASTER but so much fun when I look back now. Of course, Disney wasn’t closed but many things happened along the way.
"Probably kept up for a mile or two." Hilarious! You edited that line out. And Clark had to pretend to be distraught. He didn't care. The dog was a jerk! But the killing was unintentional. What does it say that you care more about the dog than Aunt Edna? Wait until you see the opening scene from European Vacation (no spoilers).
I had the biggest crush on Dana Barron (Audrey) when this movie came out! Her co-star Anthony Michael Hall (Rusty) also did, as he stated such in some later documentary type media pieces that talked about behind the scenes and the filming trip. (They filmed a lot on the actual road and not just on a studio lot like 98% of todays movies)
Yeah, she was cute. I met a girl similar to her when I was working at Six Flags when I was 16. We rode one of the spinning rides together, and I started to get motion sickness. I was in full panic mode. I was sure I was going to puke all over her. She was pressed up against me by the centrifugal force of the ride. Her head was right below my chin. By some miracle, I managed to hold it in. I was SO relieved. That would have been the ultimate dating nightmare. 🥵
I agree. The scenes with Eric Idle (from Monty Python) were funny. The same with when they are staying with that German couple who didn't know who the Griswalds were.
Yeah, different kid actors is the running joke in the series. Not to mention they're never the same age as they should be compared to the most recent film prior, and sometimes the brother is older than the sister, or the sister is older than the brother. It's just too bad Chevy Chase aged out, no more Clark Griswald Vacation films. Although, I really enjoyed the reboot-sequel Vacation (2015).
Even if Chevy Chase drank from the Fountain of Youth, he wouldn't be in any more Vacation movies. He was an obnoxious jerk when he first came to prominence on Saturday Night Live in the mid-'70s, and he only got worse and worse over time. Since he got kicked off the Community series, his acting career is pretty much over. No one is willing to work with him, even at gunpoint.
Some fun facts ... as the Griswalds were leaving Chicago and they cut to the aerial shot of the car on the exit ramp, that is what was used in the opening credits of "Married ... With Children." The car salesman was comedian and future "Schitt's Creek" star and co-creator Eugene Levy. Rusty was the debut of Anthony Michael Hall before he would go on to star in "The Breakfast Club" "Sixteen Candles" among others ... The girl in the sportscar was super model and then-wife of Billy Joel, Christie Brinkley. The actress with the best line "Yeah, but daddy says I do it the best" was said by a very young Jane Krakowski, who would go on the star in "Ally McBeal," "30 Rock" and the current host of "Name That Tune."
with the Vacation franchise, in each of the 4 movies the kids were played by different people, starting with Rusty being the older sibling with this movie, played by Anthony Michael Hall, whose acting career never stopped going into adulthood. you may have seen him in The Dark Knight as the reporter seen throughout that movie. Christmas Vacation was the 3rd movie, Vagas Vacation was the 4th, European Vacation was the 2nd. this was the first.
I'd include Vacation 2015 in the franchise also because Chevy and Beverly were still in it. As much as I did not want to watch that one, it was quite funny. It beats Vegas for me, maybe even European
I LOVE Cam’s weak stomach. HAHA. This movie was such a hoot as a kid in the 80’s. And Edna… HA. We had a neighbor named Edna and we gave her hell after this movie came out. HA.
This one and Christmas are probably the ones people love and talk about the most. But the sequel, European Vacation, and the fourth installment, Vegas Vacation, both have a really dumb charm about them. I’m actually able to watch those two more frequently for some reason.
@@BensSoZen Vegas Vacation gets the shaft a lot because it’s clearly and marketing ploy for the title city and a cash grab for everyone else. You could probably find it at the bottom of a DVD bin for $3 at your local Walmart
Don't bother watching european vacation or Vegas vacation#! There a waste of time but the best thing about it is they came back with Christmas Vacation and redeem themselves ( catch the salute I gave out for Harry Dunn) 😂😂
9:55 - some guy got drunk and fell asleep behind the wheel of a "smart" car, going at 100 mph. Cops tried everything to wake him up, lights, noise, but nothing worked. So they had to get in front of the car and then slow down so the autopilot would do so as well.
Reminds me of a news snippet about a guy who told the cops he hadn’t been drinking and driving, because he was only taking a drink at stop signs and red lights.
Whatever you do don't forget to watch European Vaction-hilarious! It's especially hilarious for me because I have German ancestry and there are a bunch of German jokes! Also Rusty and Audry change every film! Anthony Michael Hall is the best Rusty, also check out 16 Candles and Weird Science(Anthony and Robert Downey Jr. are in this as well) Robert also plays Iron Man as well.
One of my favorite road trip movies. I still remember a trip I took over to Pennsylvania from Ohio back in 2003. Everything was going fine until I hit Pittsburgh. Coming out of the Fort Pitt tunnel, my exit was closed, and I got lost in downtown Pittsburgh. After passing the same building a third time, I got back on the freeway and found my way to a Days Inn. I stopped and went to the front desk. The lady at the front desk and the guy she was checking in got a laugh when I said "I know this is going to probably sound strange coming from a guy, but I'm lost." After getting directions and going through parts of Pittsburgh that I never imagined I'd be driving through, I got on US 22 heading east out of town. Only problem was, they were rebuilding the road, and traffic was squeezed into one lane in each direction, moving at about 5 MPH when we were moving. Stopped in traffic, I was literally watching the temperature gage on my dashboard going up. So, I did what we were told in driver's ed: roll down the windows and crank up the heater to draw the heat out of the engine. It worked, but in the middle of August, I was miserable and began screaming Clark's "This is no longer a vacation" rant. Traffic cleared, and then when I got to the B&B that I was staying at, a thunderstorm came through, setting off the tornado sirens. The owner of the B&B had guests come down to her apartment to be near the safety shelter if needed. Thankfully the rain cleared, and the rest of the trip went much more smoothly.
One of the best road trip comedy movies ever made! Originally the ending was a lot darker as Clark and his family drive to Roy Wally's home and take him as well as his family hostage, where they force Wally to sing and dance. When the neighbors witness what's happening, they call the police, as a SWAT team busts in and arrest Clark and the Griswold's. Wally gets them out on bail, telling them that they have banned from his theme park and they must never return to California ever again. Clark agrees and the family flies back to Chicago.
1. FACT: They don't crush cars right away. They will resell them and/or sell the parts. 2. My favorite part is when they ALL fall asleep in the car while it's still rolling. 🤣 3. There's no way he would have gotten a parking place right in front of the "Long Branch" saloon. 4. "Bop your baloney"="Spank your monkey"🤣🤣 5. The guy at the campground is Brian Doyle-Murry (Bill Murry's Brother) and he played Clark's boss in "Christmas Vacation". 6. He's crazy. I'd take Beverly DeAngelo 😍😋over Christy Brinkley any day. 7. Who didn't love John Candy? 8. Mr. Walley/Eddie Bracken played the toy store owner in "Home Alone II". Do the rest of the Vacation movies. Especially Christmas Vacation.
So funny I watched your Christmas Vacation reaction this morning… actually searched Cam And Zay Vacation right after and then you posted it just today. Phenomenal.
This movie came out in the summer of 1983, just about the time my family and I got back from a 4-week trip driving from Columbus, Ohio out to Seattle, down to San Francisco, then back to Ohio. I went to see it with my mother and sister, and we cracked up seeing so many too-familiar experiences. No WallyWorld, and Aunt Edna did not die along the way (although we did stop to visit her), but we could definitely relate to a lot of what we saw.
Rusty was played by Anthony Michael Hall. He probably isn't in the sequels because he had a busy career in the 1980s. You could probably do a series of reactions of just his movies. I highly recommend _Weird Science_ and _Sixteen Candles._
I was about Rusty's age when this movie came out. Not gonna lie, I had pretty much his entire wardrobe. From the Izod and OP shirts to the corduroy shorts. He was played by Anthony Michael Hall, who was very popular in this time. He had four big hit movies in a row: Vacation, Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club and Weird Science. He was considered part of 'the Brat Pack' of the 1980s: Emilio Estevez Anthony Michael Hall Rob Lowe Andrew McCarthy Demi Moore Judd Nelson Molly Ringwald Ally Sheedy
Would you normally lie? Is that why you had to point out that you wasn't going to lie? If you're such a liar, then how can we trust you when you say that you're not going to lie?
Well I was jonesing for some Cam and Zay! This movie was absolutely a blast. Especially when it first came out. So my favorite part wasn't shown. It's when the truckster launched off that closed road and the kids ended up in the front seat. 😂 I almost choked from laughing when I first saw that. Aunt Edna with her busted hat leaving the car. I'm glad you guys enjoyed it. So great seeing you guys again! ❤❤

I LOVE Cam’s weak stomach. HAHA. This movie was such a hoot as a kid in the 80’s. And Edna… HA. We had a neighbor named Edna and we gave her hell after this movie came out. HA.
There's actually 4 movies in this series! Vacation, European Vacation, Christmas Vacation, Vegas Vacation.
This one and Christmas are probably the ones people love and talk about the most. But the sequel, European Vacation, and the fourth installment, Vegas Vacation, both have a really dumb charm about them. I’m actually able to watch those two more frequently for some reason.
European was may favorite when we had HBO as a kid, but i never knew about a Vegas Vacaction
Vacation 2015 beats Vegas and possibly European
@@Dr.Acula76 god no.
Always a good day when we get a reaction from you guys!! Thank you for making my day better with another awesome video!
The Ferrari driver is Christie Brinkley. Billy Joel's ex wife
Blonde girl in the Ferrari is supermodel Christy Brinkley!!
Also, the used car salesman is none other than Eugene Levy aka Johnny Rose from Schitt's Creek.
You guys should watch the sequel European Vacation.
The cat salesman Ed at the beginning of the movie, played the dad in American Pie. 😉
Glad to see you guys react to classic oldies.. back when comedies were funny.. i dig them shades Zay 😎
The reason they didn't use the same actor for Rusty is that Christmas Vacation was done over ten years after this one.
I would only watch the first 3 *National Lampoon's Vacations (Vacation) (Christmas Vacation) & (European Vacation)*
1. FACT: They don't crush cars right away. They will resell them and/or sell the parts.
2. My favorite part is when they ALL fall asleep in the car while it's still rolling. 🤣
3. There's no way he would have gotten a parking place right in front of the "Long Branch" saloon.
4. "Bop your baloney"="Spank your monkey"🤣🤣
Love how Cams eyes roll up when he gags.😅
I like this one WAY more than Christmas vacation. It's just ruder and more my style.
So funny I watched your Christmas Vacation reaction this morning… actually searched Cam And Zay Vacation right after and then you posted it just today. Phenomenal.
My personal favorite is European Vacation, this one is good too along with Christmas Vacation.
The kids are different actors in every vacation movie
This movie came out in the summer of 1983, just about the time my family and I got back from a 4-week trip driving from Columbus, Ohio out to Seattle, down to San Francisco, then back to Ohio. I went to see it with my mother and sister, and we cracked up seeing so many too-familiar experiences. No WallyWorld, and Aunt Edna did not die along the way (although we did stop to visit her), but we could definitely relate to a lot of what we saw.
Another really funny Chevy Chase movie is Funny Farm. Hilarious movie.
He was considered part of 'the Brat Pack' of the 1980s: Emilio Estevez
Anthony Michael Hall
Rob Lowe
Andrew McCarthy
Demi Moore
Judd Nelson
Molly Ringwald
Ally Sheedy
Would you normally lie? Is that why you had to point out that you wasn't going to lie? If you're such a liar, then how can we trust you when you say that you're not going to lie?
Always a good laugh when Cam almost pukes!
When Anthony Michael Hall was "drinking" the can of beer was empty. Completely improvised by him.
Don't get used to the kid actors. They're different in every Vacation movie.
Ahhh... an iconic comedy :) - Great reaction as always guys!
And European Vacation is the 2nd one; Christmas Vacation is the 3rd
Well I was jonesing for some Cam and Zay! This movie was absolutely a blast. Especially when it first came out. So my favorite part wasn't shown. It's when the truckster launched off that closed road and the kids ended up in the front seat. 😂 I almost choked from laughing when I first saw that. Aunt Edna with her busted hat leaving the car.
I'm glad you guys enjoyed it. So great seeing you guys again! ❤❤
04:42, hey it's a low rider and a convertible.
You two have to react to"Uncle Buck" with John Candy.😊
If some used car salesman ever tried to pull that stunt, I’m calling the law and my lawyer and I’m getting paid
Did Clarke really leave the dog on purpose? As a kid, I was like "Oh no! he must feel terrible." But the adult in me understands the decision now.
No.
Aunt Edna was a comedy legend by this time her partner cid Cesar has an important call back roll in Vegas vacation and he also was a comedy legend, sid was in an alstar packed cast in its a mad, mad, mad, mad world please check it out very old very long but lol after joker constantly easily more jokes than both airplane movies
The beautiful Christie Brinkley !
Rusty is Anthony Micheal Hall he played in a tv show called the Dead Zone. Worth watching.
For my money, Anthony Michael Hall as Rusty is the best version. He had fantastic chemistry with Chevy Chase. Which is rare. ❤️
I liked Anthony Micheal Hall in the tv show where he was psychic. He was in his 20s at the time around 2003.
@julienielsen4462
That's was Deadzone. It was a show based on the book Deadzone, by Stephen King. There is also a film version with Christopher Walken in the lead role.
Yay!! 🎉 I can’t wait to get home from work and watch your reactions to this classic!!
