Happy New Years & I wanted to say Thank You for teaching me everything I know about CNC work my company wouldn't have gone anywhere without your helpful videos!
Another great video John. One note, I have to hold down BOTH mouse buttons and then hit 'X' to convert to construction. I tried over and over and re-watched the relevant part of this video multiple times to see what I was doing wrong. I have wanted a quicker and easier way to convert to construction for a long time and you've given a super duper tip with this one. Cheers, Gary
+NYC CNC YES !!! N-o-w, you tell me we only have to select. However, I watched and listened again and you say, "just hold it down". That is what threw me off the scent. Keep the tips coming.
Happy new year John. Back then you built the cheap DIY CNC machine, afaik you did the CAD in SolidWorks? How would you do something like this in Fusion 360, specifically things like pulleys and belts? I guess youd have to improvise a little because Fusion 360 does not support those things (yet)? Id love to see those topics in a future project or in the Fusion Friday series, maybe design a second similar machine but this time in Fusion 360? :)
Thanks for sharing :) I managed to follow along, got a bit confused in the convert/construct knife angle part, but got there in the end :) My knife looks a bit more like a comedy bayonette. Next setting up and machining the knife ?
John I was wondering if you have any videos on getting the fusion360 cad/cam files on to the machine you are using? I draw in my office and I'm almost done with my cnc mill conversion. I'm almost ready to do some machining. Thanks for your time
Thank you so much for this great video. I was tearing my hair out trying to figure out the best way to do my sword blade. You saved me not only hours of work but probably years on my life too :)
Nice vid big John . I was communicating with Kevin a bit ago. We went over generating tooling from a part. Great guy knows his stuff. showed him how i do it with my software and we tried with fusion (it was a challenge but he got it).Im getting the hang of it. still not to sure about the cam side so use to talking plainer cut of .020-.050 thou. I have a new used Haas mini that's all new to me as well (the tormach is not getting to much use these days)..
I have question, i made knife on Fusion 360 and i cut bodies to make blade shape, so i dont have perfect outline for my blade shape. Do you know how to draw or copy the outline of the body to sketch ?
Thanks so much for this video! I've been trying all kinds of things for days to try and figure out how to bevel a knife I'm designing, and after looking at 4 or 5 other videos, this one had exactly what I was looking for. Subbed!
Fewer steps = faster completion + fewer mistakes I use Solid Edge which is similar enough to what you're using. I might've used the offset line command to create the sweep path. Maybe some fewer steps there too. The more you do it, the more you learn the shortcuts. Thanks, John
+NYC CNC yeah... except offset sketch entities in Fusion 360 currently sucks. It gives you the impression it has offset a chain of geometry and asks for dimensional input.. But then it doesn't apply any offset constraints or the dimension you typed in... so currently the way you did it, is ultimately what you would have had to do anyway.
John, I'm stumped! At about 4:02 you say to hold down left mouse button and then you picked a profile, the little triangle that we want to sweep. No matter what I do, I can not select that triangle. It's like its not even there. I've tried over and over and can't figure out what I'm doing different than you.
+NYC CNC I'll try to get you a look at it. I wonder if has something to do with the "project" command right before the sweep. I'm a little confused as to the purpose of project still.
+NYC CNC Hey, John, just wanted to tell you I got it. Finally! I completely drew this 3 or 4 times before it worked. I think one problem, which I know you've heard, is that you go too fast for us newbs. I was getting hung up at the spot right before the sweep where you were talking about projecting and then the X keyboard shortcut. I kept going back and listening to the video and it finally clicked. Love your videos, keep them coming!
You could have swept a vee shape (cuts both sides) rather than the wedge (just one side). This would have created both sides of the blade in the sweep rather than having to mirror one side across at the end. Just requires another line in your swept sketch. Even fewer operations.
+Murray Edington That would have worked, however the mirroring will make a more stable and efficient model. In that example it wouldn't have been a big deal. But as your sketch grows more complicated it is easier for Fusion to do the mirror than to calculate the sketch relations.
+Mechanical Advantage So, he could have just mirrrored the wedge he sketched while inside the sketch along the center of the blade before exiting to do the sweep? Would that make the optimal solution for the task?
Thanks dude your a life saver. It was a little tricky for me since the sketched line went up on a weird angle on my knife, but I FINALLY got it.

Incredibly cool!
I'm firing up 360 now
Thanks John/everyone you're keeping me in a modern era

Do you think you could go through how to create some scales or handles and then how to get the pivot set up and attach the blade?
Great feature. Thanks John!
I enjoyed the open house last year, couldn't make it this year. Sounds like it was even better...
Keep up the videos.
Happy new year John.

Great improvements.
great video as always. have a great New Year to come.
happy new year Sr.

Almost Japanese profile blade... I like it
