    Great video John! When I switched over from Sprutcam to Fusion360 for CAM, I kept with my mantra of ALWAYS model all fixtures - this forced me to learn quite a lot about joints and assemblies in Fusion360. Once you get them down and get used to which joint types assemble from with joint origins, it actually gets pretty intuitive and quick to put stuff together. For example: I commonly assemble modeled raw stock, parts and fixtures / vises in CAD, then switch to cam and configure everything in the setup, makes life so much easier (and the not-crashing confidence level goes way up) when you get to the machine!

    Hi John,
    Really appreciate the videos and the way you have slowed down just a little and added on screen info to help us follow along. Liked the part about duplicating objects, moving them and then assembling them into one unit. You did a nice job in demonstrating the assembly feature. Look forward to more on this subject.

    I mostly use fusion for simple 2D drawings for my plasma table, so now venturing into joints/assemblies looking for vids, and yours came up in search results. awesome video, most useful sir

    You can use the motion link between the square blocks this wil make them move in relation to each other

    John you're saving my ass left and right with these videos. I'm trying to switch entirely to 360 from solidworks and this was the thing that keeping me using both.

      Geof Dumas it’s been 3 years since your comment. So are you happy with your switch? I had to move to fusion because of its ability to work with meshes and inbuilt cam. But i am starting to like it’s cad as well. And i hate switching between the two. And Fusion is free. What do you miss about solidworks that i am gonna miss too?

    Great video, the joint origin tip has just saved me from a world of pain! I've been creating sketches to help me align parts at certain distances, most of my parts are imported from another software so as built joints aren't an option. Hard to get round to the fusion way of thinking!

    I used some of the information in this video, thank you!
    I'm trying to make a cam plate to open and close louvers. I managed to get the drive shaft grounded in a bushing so it could rotate, then an arm extends out from the drive shaft with a pin that slots into the cam plate. I tried to use the pin slot joint as you did, however it only works on one sliding axis and one rotational axis. I used planar joint, which allows two axis of movement and one of rotation. The only problem I'm having with that is the contact sets are not preventing the pin from passing through the end of the cam slot.

    Thanks for figuring this stuff out at a great expense to you for time! I'm sure many people will benefit from it, as I hope I do, someday. I love this new age technology and I think you do too, but to many it's a hurdle that needs to be cleared, including myself. P.S. I love that you have a simple haircut, no tatoos or the other trendy crap that presents itself in your generation: I think it shows strength of character and independence from the present tendency towards conformity, which I greatly admire.
    Just keep on being yourself and you will succeed, I almost guarantee it.

    This is a little late but... To keep the sides of the blocks parallel perhaps you can use a planar joint. You can even offset the distance between the two sides you want to keep parallel for that joint type. Closest thing I found to traditional mates from other CAD software.

    Hi John. I'm new to F360 and this video was very helpful. Is there a contact threshold value somewhere? I set the contact enable, but if I move the mouse quickly, it'll violate the contact constraint every time allowing me to move the second rod out of the slot to the right.

    Great video. I had some of the same issues moving from Inventer to Solidworks. Everyone has there own way of doing things and their own naming conventions. It's a pain this stuff isn't more standardized, but it's getting better all the time.

    Fusion Friday :) you'll find as you play more with joints and assemblies it gets a lot easier, it least in Autodesk inventor which appears to be very similar to the fusion assembly. Thanks for the great vids man, give it time one day you will love the power of these programs, just takes a bit more learning. NOt that I am an expert by any means :) but I have experienced your pains in the past when it comes to assemblies not always as intuitive as one might have hoped for :) Look forward to next Friday later man.     hi, why whyn i joint by "sliding" my object move a little bit... not in the axis, but "up" or "down" then i have to move it ... or just use "planar"

    Hi John, I would imagine if you want joints to resemble the physical world you would provide physical key slots on the rods like you would if you were to build them, or have them just slide not cylindrical to allow the software control them.How would you keep it aligned in the real world?
    BTW I love your videos, best tutorials for working through real world examples.Thanks for your patience to explain in such detail, I follow all you videos and must say I got my best start from you. Look forward to next week!

    I would definitely recommend these tutorials to someone else who wants to get their hands on fusion 360...i do a lot of sheet metal drawings...we build assemblies with over 50 sheet metal components in our welding shop..we use solidworks for all drawings..i just started working on fusion 360..i didnt really get the idea of assembly in fusion 360 ...could you please make a tutorial with sheet metal assemblies??!.

    PS To the great people on the F360 team who might be reading this. Your Inspect-Measure function truly, and I'm talking unbelievably, SUCKS! I'm away at the moment so modelling on my Macbook Pro, and attempting to do that using MagicPrefs and the Trackpad is bad enough. Trying to use the so called "measure function" to work out why one joint was always coming up with a conflict for no apparent reason was enough to just about want me to throw the whole lot off my 14th story hotel balcony! I love this program, I really do, but guys, you gotta fix that inspection function!!!
    PPS the reason for the conflict BTW was I'd somehow created two bodies under the same component and that created a conflict when assembled. A message to all the NYCNCettes out there, heed John's advice and ALWAYS create a new component when starting a new body, or it will bite you when assembling and it's not always obvious why.

      Solid Byte No, but you can right click on the component and then choose " save copy as". Then it will be a seperate part file. Hope that helps 🙂

    How would you make a joint for something similar to a solid lifter that rides on a cam?

      +NYC CNC A lifter as in an automotive engine. Solid lifters could be modeled as a solid cylinder approximately 1" diameter x 3" in length. The other type would be hydraulic lifters which would needlessly complicate the diagram for what I am looking for. Then there are roller tappet vs flat tappet lifters, again that would needlessly complicate the diagram.

    is there any way to align threads? and also is there any way to configure a joint based off of another joints state. For example, linear movement via a ballscrew and nut. Can you tell the software for every rotation of the ballscrew, move the nut 1/8 of an inch in a linear direction?

      +Colin B. I have seen a workaround for this. Combining a cylindrical with a linear motion I believe. Haven't tried it myself, but you should be able to find it with a search. It should be on the Fusion forum.

      +Jared R Great thanks! I think that would be so cool to take that to the next step and build your cnc in fusion 360, simulate your tool paths with that model, and see the screws moving and everything. more for fun than practicality, but never the less - cool.

      +Colin B. Correction. It should be 2 cylindrical joints. Using one for sliding action and one for rotation. Link them together. Tested it and it works.

    When you create the joint and fusion responds by letting you know the joint was successful by moving it based on the type you selected. Once done, how did you interact with the joint? I notice you move the component around by using your mouse. For me, clicking and dragging does nothing. Are you pressing something as you click and drag? I can't seem to figure this one out.

      I don't know if there's an easy way to do it, but if you right click, it will have an option to 'drive' the joint, which means you can see how it moves and works.

    Not what I came here for, but that slot command will definitely save me some time now that you've pointed it out!
    So what if you need a position to be dependent on, say two holes that need to be aligned? Coming from a Pro E background, I've been struggling with this.

    Small digestable tutorials < 10 minutes perfect . I have set myself an abitious task of building an clock escapement and testing how it pivots. I have built the parts and trying to see if I can incorporate gravity ..does fusion 360 do that

      Yes it does, in simulation mode. There are two possible directions for gravity to act in, the -Z and -Y axis, depending on whether you choose Y up or Z up in (Your name at the top right corner) -> (Preferences) -> Default modelling orientation. Good luck!

    Align is temporary... What's making me nuts(easy to do in this app) is keeping parts parallel will adding joints to additional parts and and while the assembly is animated. I'm assembling a system that is virtually the same as a scissor lift you'd see in a warehouse or lumber yard. I need to keep the top plate parallel to the bottom plate regardless of distance between them..... Have spent much time trying to accomplish this without luck... most tutorials are too basic.... covering the same fundamentals over and over.....

    You can use motion link under the assemble tab to link parts in various ways.

    This one of the best if not the best series of videos for Fusion 360 it covers many different topics and they are short videos if you like short.
