HIKING SCOTLAND: Stay off the moors!! Bleak but beautiful hills in this 15 mile walk Largs-Gourock

- With the 1981 film American Werewolf in London' in my mind, I walked 15 miles/25km from Largs north to Gourock along the Old Largs Road. This road passes inland through the moors, and the scenery was magnificent. I was attached by a cloud of flies, perhaps attracted by the countless sheep, cattle and horses.

Seeing the Old Largs Road brings back a lot of fond memories for me! Me and my grandad used to walk various sections of it whenever I was staying at his over a weekend. He lived in the wee village of Skelmorlie, just uphill from Wemyss Bay station. I lived in Greenock at the time, but I'm in Paisley nowadays, rarely got a reason to go down the Clyde to my old stomping grounds. Sadly he passed away before we got the chance to do the whole thing, and he always talked about wanting to do a night walk with some friends one day.
I say you should do the night walk, it'd be quite the experience! Your travel vids are even inspiring me to give some of them a try too. I'm 31, not exactly in the best shape of my life, but tackling the Old Largs Road seems like it'd be a good experience once my stamina's back up to acceptable levels!

I'm definitely want to do the night walk, but the weather is usually cloudy or overcast, and I really want to see the stars. Once I see a clear night coming up, I'll be off!

I'm in two minds whether I want to wear the hi-viz jacket and reflectors, or remain dark and avoid being seen. At that time in the morning I'd be surprised at any traffic on that road!

Yes Scott. Get out in the middle of nowhere in Scotland and photograph the stars. Away from artificial light pollution.
You know, a mate of mine came with me on a train journey to Charleville in outback Queensland. Well known for two
things. The best clear skies in Queensland for stars to be photographed, and to see the bilbies. Well during our visit
clouds moved in. No stars to photograph, and the bilbies didn't come out of their burrows. Didn't our wives make a
thing about that when we got home. But we enjoyed outback hospitality and a great train ride!

Great to see this. My daughter and I cycled over that hill on an epic ride from Glasgow Central to Largs, camping at the site you show in the video right by the gate you walked past! It was made all the more epic as we were up at 4:30am at home in Hatfield, Herts and got the train to Glasgow before we started cycling. Our weather was spectacularly good, so no flies just lots of sunshine.

Yes absolutely Wagon Wheels are getting smaller, they were two handed affairs when I was younger.

Great stuff Scott. Your stamina is outstanding and your choice this time ace. The Clyde Estuary round to the Firth of Clyde is a smashing place to go in whatever capacity. (Even if you took the Moors Road) I think you may have have taken a decision by now on your night walk stargazing but if not, go for it. I think last time you probably saw part of the Milky Way. I've only saw it with some light pollution. And now as a self proclaimed geek I think you should go, clear skies permitting..???

You must do it
I'm just waiting for a clear night. We have had a fairly wet summer this year, and the autumn/fall period is usually no better as we get the remnants of the tropical storms from the US east coast swinging our way, and that usually means clouds! Thanks for your comment.
I believe that you should do the night walk, but don't expect to see as many stars as you would see from the southern hemisphere. There is a much greater concentration of stars in the southern hemisphere than there are in the northern hemisphere.

What's the point of a night walk when you can't see the environment around you!
Hi Jim, the idea of a night walk would be to see the stars away from urban light pollution. I check the weather forecast every week, and with winter not too far away, getting a clear night is looking unlikely. I'm still determined to do it though.
