These guys and gals are absolutely phenomenal! Their vouces and harmonies! I don't want to insult the band, but I barely hear because I'm so focused in their voices. 😊 As a java drinker, I adore this song. This is quite bluesy, too. Love it! ManTrans Rocks!
In college, I was in a great group. This song allowed us all a great moment ! Usually the soprano and tenors get the good stuff. Not here. We ALL did. THanks to Steve/Justin Tanner for gathering is all together. I miss it. Truly. Okay, now SING !!!
I haven't heard this song in years! My mom used to play it on her car radio when she'd drive me and my siblings places in her little white Hyundai. This song brings back memories! THanks for posting!
Love when Laurel Massé sang: Slip me a slug of the wonderful mug an I´ll cut a rug just as snug in a jug Droooop a nickel in the pot joe, (She was the soprano of the group, but here voice was too lovely and versatile)
For four weeks in the summer of 1975, The Manhattan Transfer had their own summer replacement television show on CBS. The show was shown on Sunday evenings from 7:30 - 8:30 P.M. from August 10 through August 31. The show was a variety show with a potpourri of songs and humor. Archie Hahn was the only series regular who was not a member of the group. His principal contribution was as the character Doughie Duck in various comedy spots. This video is taken from one of those shows.
Decades ago, I took a voice class with Laurel at Ashokan music and dance camp, Western and Swing Week. Much fun. This is a great video. The guy in yellow is a scream.
For whatever reason, on my home from work I started humming this song and thought I'd look it up. WOW!!! This really takes me back to a time and group I enjoyed listening to. The harmony in their voices still sound good. :)
So you like the Ink Spots version, post it on UA-cam so we can compare! Meanwhile, this is a really great cut from a really classy group, who can sing absolutely anything and do the stage show to match! Why is American showbiz so incredibly professional and everything else American a shambles?
This clip and Je T'attend seem to be at a slightly later time than Man. Tran. TV series...what is source? In any event, love these early clips...forgot how theatrical the group was...how sultry Miss Masse' presented...a different era, indeed...love the group now, as well. Great work, Sergio.
lol@ corny, but yeah this is jazz all about Jazz is Jive! In jazz words are no big deal that is why they scat , words is just a way to unleash ur vocals :)
Mr. Moto, a Japanese detective character from movies in the 1930s. (It doesn't make sense to me either, but it would have been current in 1940 when the song was written.)
Does anyone know where this version comes from? It's clearly not live, but it's slightly different than the original studio recording. Any information would be greatly appreciated, as a friend of mine is trying to arrange this right now.
Ha, ha! I like that; "coffee is slavery"! So funny. Actually, it is for many, many people in the world! I can (almost) prove it! (And if it is with sugar, as in Coke, it is even more addictive!! And to small kids even wors!!!) Ask me if you are interested to know more about this! (No, I am not sarchastic or trying to fool anyone.) I love this song and M.T. I saw them live in Stockholm, but that was like 100 years ago. They where as good as I was expecting; that was really good. A sweet memory.
visitors to this site put absolutely too much emphasis on this group's appearance. either you like them for their music or you don't. if you know their history, then you'd know they earned their eccentric demeanour..
Sunday, August 10, 1975 CBS 7:30 pm - 8:30 pm Sunday, August 17, 1975 CBS 7:30 pm - 8:30 pm Sunday, August 24, 1975 CBS 7:30 pm - 8:30 pm Sunday, August 31, 1975 CBS 7:30 pm - 8:30 pm
You forgot the affectionate irony they bring to their interpretation. Yeah, it's corny. So they celebrate that corniness, cheesiness, all the quaint musical conventions of bygone musical eras. They love the music, and it makes them laugh too. What a combination.
When was this filmed? Laurel was a member of the group, not a guest as the title might suggest. Laurel makes a great contribution but ... Is this a lip-synch?
Great stuff. I'm not convinced, though, that this song is really about coffee. I suspect it's about something much less legal. (I note in passing that the 'guy in the yellow jacket' is actually the closest thing this band has to a leader, being the only constant member since the very first lineup. And this is a silly song, so it needs a silly person singing that part.) One of the weirdest hit singles ever.

One of my all-time MT favorites. They are all great singers, but Laurel Masse was awesome.
I'm in varsity choir, and this is what we are singing. Hahaha, I love this song!

I haven't heard this song in years! My mom used to play it on her car radio when she'd drive me and my siblings places in her little white Hyundai. This song brings back memories! THanks for posting!

His name is Tim Hauser. He was the one who formed the Manhattan Transfer!

@mnestrt XD the guy in the yellow jacket is SILLY
It is ridiculous that I get a "thumbs down" for pointing out the correct source for the video.
The Two Ronnies from the 1980's - can't remember exact year.
They had a TV show in 1973 I believe.

Coffee and tea, help - he’s really creepy
A cup a cup a cup a cup a cup
@@thaumatomane Wow, I wrote that 12 years ago and completely forgot about it
@@resonance2001 Ah, the internet. Terrifying in its timeless eternity.
Does anybody know where to get the bossa nova version of this?
Hmm. There is another video on UA-cam that claims this segment is from a 1978 show called "The Two Ronnies."
Nyah--sounds like a coffee commercial
Jeezus he sounds like Louis Armstrong!!!! :D:D:D
Aubrianna Merry
He's deliberately doing so. A sort of tribute. They did a whole album dedicated to him.
WHITE COLLAR!!! Don't know if this is the right version, but it's great!! :)
For all you Java junkies out there: Happy Monday!
#bo_favs
I don't like coffee, but I LOVE this song. It is currently the lead song on my Eclecto-Mania playlist.

What ever happened to LAUREL MASSÉ?
The name of the island has nothing to do with the name of the song, buddy.
Waiter waiter percolator :D
@toastersstoast bah
dit is de essentie van close harmony zang. muziek mag gewoon leuk zijn. en, de koffie is lekker.
@toastersstoast bahhhh. he's goofy.
What the hell is happening here?
