    After a phone consultation with owner/chief engineer, Philip Graham, back in Summer of 2015 about which mic would suit the two guitar two voice duo I play in, we opted for Louise. That summer we were the opener for an up and coming Darlingside in Chico, CA. During the show, they (Don Mitchell) commented on how much cooler the opening act's mic was than theirs. Less than a month later, Darlingside also had Louise and now has numerous different Ear Trumpet Labs mics, notably several Edwina's and an Evelyn if I recall correctly. Six plus years later, my duo is still using and love playing with Louise. She still sounds crisp and clear and we often get comments about the quality of our sound with Louise. I am considering adding Myrtle to the mix as well.
    I should also say, working with Philip and his daughter, Malachi was a nice and memorable experience. How often can you call a company and get their owner, (a kind and decent human being by the way) on the phone to help see if their products are right for you? I can't highly enough recommend Ear Trumpet Labs and their products that have performed with consistency, longevity, and tasteful style.

    A friend of mine brought the "Louise" to a gig where we wanted to do single mic, traditional bluegrass style show. It performed exceptionally well, zero feedback trouble and everyone at both venues said you could hear each musician clear as a bell. I just bought my own. Now I'm looking at the Chantelle.....

    This was helpful. I'll probably go with the Josephine since I like the look and have heard great results with the Louise. I primarily play acoustic guitar instrumentals, but I tend to move around a little so I think it will be a better chance than a closer range mic

    Beautiful microphones, any plans for extending the line up with a ribbon, tube or dynamic microphone? A microphone for voice, speach, broadcast in your design would be AWESOME!

      Hey Steffen! No plans for ribbon, tube, or dynamic at present. We like focusing on what we know we're best at-- condensers! I will say that Edwina and Delphina have both been used for voice and broadcast to great success. Definitely worth a listen!

    Hi! I’ve just asked my friend to place an order for a Josephine for me. Can’t wait to get my hands on her.
    I just revisited this video and really wonder. Did you record the sound in this video with only the Edwina (I suppose) on your left hand side or you have some ambient mics set also.
    If it’s only the Edwina, the sound I hear in this video is just unbelievably out of this world.
    Thanks

    Hi, I’ve recently bought a Myrtle and I am delighted with it. I intend to use it live, for vocals and acoustic guitar, with a compact battery powered PA of some sort and I wondered about possible feedback issues. Would it be ok for example in front of a Bose L1, or something similar? I just wondered if you could offer any advice for a simple, portable live set up with Myrtle. Many thanks, Phil

    • @Eartrumpetlabs
      @Eartrumpetlabs  4 роки тому +6

      The Bose L1 sounds great with our mics, but you really can't put it right behind you when utilizing a gather-round approach. Having a mic with the sensitivity and gain to give decent volume to an instrument 3 feet away, pointed at a reproducing speaker only an additional six feet away in the same direction, is never going to work. However, people have had success placing the column just about level with the mic, not too close, especially if they can angle the mic a bit away from the column. Generally you can then hear yourself well enough from the edge of the column's pattern, but the mic and the speaker are both in areas of lower sensitivity with respect to each other, so you can get the volume out to the room pretty high. Hope this helps!

    Very helpful, thank you! Would love to have a locker full, but had to pick one (for now) and went with Delphina for solo vox/guitar and occasional duo or trio single mic. Can you say who Delphina is, and any name history?

    • @MalachiGraham
      @MalachiGraham 6 місяців тому

      We never personally knew a Delphina! When we were naming the mic, it was the variation on Edwina that Del McCoury was using at the time, so it was sort of a portmanteau. But there was also a famous artisan bakery in Portland called Delphina's, that started in a restaurant of the same name, and I heard somewhere that the name came from one of the owner's mothers or grandmothers. And that's the only real Delphina I've ever heard of!

  • @Ace_Hunter_lives

    Depending on the room, our four-piece bluegrass band (guitar, bass, mando, banjo) uses the Louise. Sometimes we add a 57 as a wing mic in case someone doesn't need to crowd around the Louise for a song and just wants their own mic and some space. The problem with a 57 though is that it really needs to be in the right place for each instrument and you really have to get up on it, which makes it tough to share if, for example, the mando and banjo might want to hang out and share the wing mic while the guitar and bass player use the Louise. Seems like the Edwina might be a better option than the SM57. How do they work with two instruments sharing it and, when taking a lead, one leaning into it and the other pulling back? Would the gain required to do that be detrimental to the sound or a feedback concern?

    • @Eartrumpetlabs
      @Eartrumpetlabs  10 місяців тому

      Edwina works great as a side mic and can certainly be shared by two players! Highly recommend for this use.

    Thanks for the video here. I'm curious to know the differences between the Edwina and the Delphina. They seem quite similar. Can you drop a note here? Thanks!

    • @Eartrumpetlabs
      @Eartrumpetlabs  4 роки тому +1

      It's all about the low end! Edwina has some low-end roll-off so she can be used for close vocals without proximity effect or boominess. The trade-off there is that lower sources may sound a little thin from 18"+ away from Edwina. Delphina has a full low-end response (acoustically the same as Myrtle), so she's not ideal for very close vocal use but can pick up a full ensemble with no loss of bass from farther distances. There's a big overlap where both mics sound good, from 3-4" inches away out to 18". The deciding factor would be if you'll want to use the mic very close (Edwina) or gather more players around (Delphina).

    • @Eartrumpetlabs
      @Eartrumpetlabs  2 місяці тому

      Yes, if you're looking to mic an acoustic ensemble that large we'd recommend two microphones spaced a few feet apart with the group divided between the two mics. That will help all players get closer in to the mic, which is the best way to get more gain before feedback.

    Quick question….I have the Edwina, and when hooked up through my Bose L1 PA systems phantom power, I really need to dial up the trim and gain unusually high (3 o’clock) just to get reasonable volume, and this creates quite a bit of hiss…does this sound typical??? Looking for guidance

    • @ScottMcCulloughBmax419
      @ScottMcCulloughBmax419 7 місяців тому

      You might consider using an inline preamp like a Fethead, which provides extremely clean preamplification so you don't have to crank your amp or DAW into hiss/fizz range. Since condenser mics require phantom power, you'd need to use the special version of the preamp that passes phantom power, called Fethead Phantom.
