I like that they put some damn good brakes on it. Especially with it's weight, stopping all that momentum in 108 feet is impressive.

Holy crap those are impressive numbers. Also the one standout feature about this car is that it actually looks nice and stylish, not stupidly styled like a Prius.

Motortrend got to 60 in 3.9 sec., it braked to a stop from 60 in 105 ft., and achieved a .92 g of lateral grip. It also did the quarter mile in 12.5 sec. at over 110 mph. This car is an awesome car.
The fact that it weighs 4,700 lbs. and has only 416 hp, and still delivers the performance of the BMW M5 which has 560 hp and weighs 400 lbs less shows the superiority of the electric motor vs the ICE.
I can't wait for lithium air batteries and carbon nano-trace cathodes (for flashcharging)!

biofuels supposedly contain more CO2 than gasoline. However, I don't consider CO2 necessarily destructive so long as we also don't cause mass deforestation. Carcinogens in the fuels are my problem.

  • @JETZcorp

Now, when you quote these numbers, is the gasoline car you're referring to a 1970 Hemi Challenger being driven by Ronnie Sox in a Chevy neighborhood, or is it a Honda CRX HF being driven in a hypermiling competition? Because there's about a 2,000% difference in fuel efficiency between those two cars, both of which are pure gas-powered.
By the way, electric motors are older than gas motors, so they're equally steampunk. Unless you think modern gas cars use flatheads that go puckity-puckity.

Why doubt it? The official EPA rating is 265 miles per charge. That includes driving with hearer on, with air conditioner on, city, highway, 60+ mph. This is not the WORST case scenario (floor it all the way and you get much less)- but definitely not the BEST case scenario. According to previous version of EPA testing (highway/city 2 cycle testing)- you could get 320 miles on this car! I would not be surprised if some enthusiasts will easili beat that number as well.

  • @Wilhem275

Do you have any references about the portable generator comparison? More scientifically, any actual data about the general energy efficiency of engines, batteries (and the generator itself :-P).
    No trolling, I'm really curious.

  • @dannytroy
    @dannytroy 11 років тому

Considering the 3700lb+ Chevy Volt gets 35/40mpg while running on gas, I think shows electric motors are the way to go. Whether running on pure electric, or by being charged from a generator, as when the Volt's battery depletes, it just makes sense to turn those wheels with electricity. Plus, it's a lot more fun (I own a Volt!). Of course I'd trade it in a minute for the Tesla, which happens to be about twice the price!

  • @michaelkraemer5846

As soon as electric cars this good looking become as relatively inexpensive as gasoline-powered cars, I'll grab one. Priuses (Prii? Prius, is it like fish?) are just too...man-loving for me, and Volts are fire hazards. This, this looks beautiful and hopefully safe.

Edmunds, why was motortrend able to pull off such better number from the same car? They got a 3.9 second 0-60, a 105 foot 60-0, but most surprisingly a .92 g of lateral grip. That's a huge miscalculation on somebody's part...

And yes, the top performance model S is expensive at $ 88,000 (with the EV-rebate), but at $ 49,900 with rebate the 40 kWh-model (150 mile range, 0-60 in 6,5 sec) is already more affordable. And prices will come down further, as with any new technology, so eventually long range EVs will become affordable for almost everyone. For that to happen cars like the Model S have to be a success. And it will be. Already 13,000 people put down a deposit before the first one even rolled out of the factory!

"The Tesla BlueStar is the proposed third generation electric car to be manufactured by Tesla Motors, with a production goal of 2015. Tesla wants the car to have a base price of US$30,000.
The company has plans for the BlueStar as part of its trickle-down strategy, where the battery and electric drivetrain technology would be developed and paid for through sales of the Tesla Roadster and Tesla Model S vehicles".

I can just see similar arguments in the past:
    - Printed books are unaffordable luxury- cow hides all the way!
    - What's the point of making gas cars if no-one can afford them? Lets just keep horse-driven buggies!
    - Those 10 inch black and white TVs are insanely expensive- let's keep the radio!
EVERY new tech is expensive at first. It gets cheaper as production ramps up. Be patient.

For Free! Tesla won't be charging money for plugging into their solar-powered Supercharging stations. Think of it. Taking road trips for free. By the time most Tesla owners get their cars, the nationwide Supercharger network will be in place.
It's beautiful, fast, high tech, super-efficient, has lots of cargo space, truly seats five + two, and it's one of the safest cars ever. It's an amazing car that I plan to save up and buy. It's only too expensive to those who can't afford its competitors.

Throw in a couple more options and your at $110,000, Plus tax and registration your out the door for $120,000. I did not include the the $7500 ( use other peoples money) tax credit. I have issues with making other people contribute to my purchase of $100,000 car after we taxpayers already loaned the car company $465 million to build this car.

That's pretty low for a GT-R these days; the price has gone up a shade on those so you'd probably be looking at a used one. Also, the two cars are in astronomically different classes. I dare anyone to put five people in a GT-R and try to tell me it's better at it than a Tesla. Or an Accord, for that matter. If you're looking at a four-seat car and then get a GT-R instead, your kids are going to be doing a lot of walking.

I was also responding to Elon Musk's, co founder of tesla, comment "Best car in the world". according to that statement and looking at other performance car numbers that cost over 100K, then yes, this car is average. Think about what you can buy for 100k! U compared it to bmw m5, i did not. I am comparing it to other $100k plus cars

#2 America has NO SHORTAGE of ELECTRICITY. Electricity can be created easily. What we have is an ENERGY dependency since our energy needs increase exponentially. Even if we drilled all our own oil, harvested coal, etc we wouldn't get it immediately - IT GOES ON THE OPEN MARKET. BIG OIL ultimately controls our energy independency.

  • @57lexus
    @57lexus 12 років тому

love this car, but it seems that it should have a second gear for higher top speed and it would be easier on the battery at cruising speeds. And who wants the car to slow down when you take your foot of the gas. That would make it harder to keep a constant speed. The degenerative braking should only take effect when you brake. And like tesla put a free energy source on it. lol

I don't hear anyone complaining about those billions WASTED to just keep GM & Chrysler alive. The taxpayers got NONE of that money back yet. And what did they get in return? The mediocre/overpriced Volt, which is still technically a gas car? Tesla, on the other hand, received less than 2% of what GM and Chrysler got and produced a car that is competitive in performance, range and price to any gas car in that price range.
Plus don't forget that the next model after X is targeted for about $30000

  • @qikqbn77

Can it get most people to Vegas or other weekend getaways on a single charge.. Nope... "best car in the world"?? for $100k, Not even close. Oh yeah.. Tesla website quotes battery replacement cost for 300 mile range model as seen in this video here= $40,000... yup, you could buy a brand new bmw 3 series car for the price of that battery. Nice try, but no thanks. jmho

Actually, the individual battery cells used in the Model S are more expensive than the cells in the Roadster's battery pack. However, because the battery packs are being made in larger quantities than the Roadster's and battery costs are continuing to fall, replacement is expected to be much cheaper.
Tesla is repaying taxpayers for the loan. Ford and GM got BILLIONS in grants. They've already got tons of money! I am very upset about this waste, not some insignificant LOAN given to Tesla.

Show me a 70k Gallardo, and I'll show you a dogged out, trashed out, probably not running Lamborghini. In any case, 300 miles equates to about 483 kilometers, and this Model S is capable of recharging in 45 minutes using a fast charging station. In any case, this Tesla is a the top of the heap as far as electrics go. If the price premium is too much for you you can always go the Nissan Leaf route, or Chevy Volt route. Both great cars with much less tech and performance for much less money.

Let's count the number of "factual errors" (lies) you had here
    1) Slalom speed greater than BMW M5 GT by 2 (66.8 vs 65). Hows that below average?
    2) Stopping distance is better than BMW M5 GT by 4 feet (108 vs 112). How is that slightly better than average?
    3) Nowhere of the website does it quote replacement price of $40,000. The battery cost was ESTIMATED to be $30,000. It is under 8 year warranty. Battery cost drops 8% a year. After warranty runs out- similar battery would cost about $15,000.
