Technology costs get less expensive over time. They don't increase unless a newer technology replaces them. Hence the reason why the Model 3 has become an even better value than the S.

@@miken4591 , it is. Materials used are better. Suspension better. Utility better. Performance better. Fit and Finish better. Exclusivity better. Not much difference between Mercedes S Class and E Class yet big price difference & status between the two. Same between Model S and 3. Model S will X will always be premium (as long as Elon continues to build them). I do think, after this amount of time, they need to update the vehicle. 8 years a long time for a vehicle in the automotive world.

    But wait, there's more.
2012 had no parking sensors - 2020 does
2012 had central TPMS that would just say "tire pressure low" without indicating which tire or how much, 2020 shows all 4 corners
2012 had Gen 1 seats, 2020 has "Gen after NextGen seats" - way more comfortable
2012 didn't have traffic-aware cruise control, or lane-keeping (basic autopilot), 2020 has that and way more
2012 didn't have automatically closing charge port door, 2020 does
2012 didn't have lighted vanity mirrors
2012 had integrated headrests, 2020 has adjustable headrests
2012 didn't have a console on the floor between the front two seats, 2020 does.
2012 didn't have under battery ceramic armor plating (though it was added later), 2020 does
2012 had a max charging rate of 120 kW, 2020 has a max charging rate of 200 kW
2012 has 3G data connectivity with MCU1 hardware for the infotainment (center) screen, 2015 has LTE data and a faster MCU.
edit: 2012 had no biohazard air filtration - 2020 does. (hat tip to scott cheney)
I'm sure I left some things off.
The only things that were better in 2012 was color choice (brown, green, silver, dolphin grey, signature red) and the option to get a panorama roof that opened.

It makes me realize the utter contempt for their customers that the ICE automakers must have when you consider what we've been offered in the past and even up to the present day. As an example, any Chrysler sedan. GM could have been the leader in electric, they've had a few tries, but couldn't get past the no maintenance required and subsequent loss of revenue for dealers and the general affect on their ICE vehicles. Their business is maximizing profit "only" or normal business practices. Elon Musk has got the idea in his head that he wants to make a difference in this world and he might just do it!

Having been to many auto shows in the last decade, it always amazed how universally lacklustre the modern car market is. . . Each model barely distinguishable from one another, just different enough to create the illusion of giving choice to the consumer.
People gravitate towards Tesla, simply because they are an interesting car in an otherwise boring market. You can tell there's some actual passion in the design, even with the growing pains they experienced as a company, you can tell Tesla actually gives a damn about giving something worthwhile to their customers.

@@titojose9216 I believe so. Check the maximum range after fully charged to compare how it lost over years, last studies online shows an incredible low degradation of batteries... I believe they can handle 300k miles or 10 more years very easily. I still have mine and still love it !
