  • Welcome back for another Game of Thrones and A Song of Ice and Fire video. In this video, I will describe what happened when The Mountain fought The Red Viper in the books. The fight between Gregor Clegane and Oberyn Martell was one of the most shocking moments in television history. This was one of those scenes that caught almost everyone off guard. It went on to become a classic moment from Game of Thrones. But how did this scene play out in George R.R. Martin's books? How faithful was this adaptation? Check out the video and find out. Thanks for watching!

I think a video on the chapter where Bran, Meera, Hodor, Jojen, and Coldhands finally reach the cave north of the wall in ADWD would be super cool! I just recently read through that chapter, and it’s pretty intense. I know they did something similar in the show, but I feel like since it’s the first chapter in the series where anyone comes across a child of the forest... well I’m guessing that makes it pretty damn special and significant lol. Also little comments from Coldhands such as “the cave is warded” I feel are important as well. That was just a chapter that had a really cool and spooky vibe for me, would love to hear your take on it!

I watch that fight scene several times over every time, but I think the actual fighting is quite slow. At least when Oberyn is landing significant hits. It bothers me more than it should, but if it wasn't for the like 1 second wait before hamstringing the Mountain and stuff the fight would look magnificient.

I've always read and watched Oberyn's way of fighting to be similar to water dancing. Or maybe because Oberyn has seen so much of Westeros and Essos that he probably took the best "moves" from each fighting style and incorporated that into his own personal fighting style? This scene also kills me bc all I can imagine is Gregor, Tywin's Mad Dog, doing what he did to Elia and her children. And worse, how I would feel if that was what happened to my sister. I thought Pedro Pascal did an EXCELLENT job portraying a grieving brother with vengeance and fury in his heart, strengthening his ability to try to murder the Mountain.

@@TalkingThrones That was one of my reminders that in GRRM's world, justice rarely occurs. Sadly, much like our own world.
But Oberyn put up the most epic and beautiful fight. I understand his need to hear the Mountain's confession though. Although it killed him, when I first read it, I thought that although his death was hellish, that Oberyn may have found some peace. I'm an emotional reader (I'm an emotional everything lol) and I try to find tiny moments of victory, happiness, justice, and some peace even within the most horrible places. That's my silly, emotional "prayer" for Oberyn.

@@Lotschi It was my desire too. I hated Gregor from the first mention of him. But, even though he killed Oberyn, he lost his own "life" in that battle. I would much rather be dead and at peace than having any weird head experiments done on me until I resembled some rotting zombie in some sort of slavery to Cersei. I'm not sure at all what happened in season 8, so that isn't my head canon. I don't really understand why the Mountain could refuse Qyburne and Cersei at the end?

The show did such an awesome job on this entire fight scene (of course everything leading up to it as well). The way they made it look when Oberyn gets tripped up, then grabbed by the Mountains right hand, lifted in front, followed by a punch knocking out his teeth, was amazing. It takes the audience from a high to an ultimate low in a second. This was not an easy scene to pull off visually and they did it to perfection.

When I watched the fight on HBO I had already read the book and knew what was coming, but my heart was pounding in my chest all the same. One of the best fight scenes put to film and a tremendous display of acting and athleticism by both men. They both truly encompass the Red Viper of Dorne and The Mountain That Rides beyond my expectations. Great scene. I can remember reading Oberyn’s gruesome death for the first time. I put the book down and just sat silently, dumbfounded. Victory and justice snatched away at the last moment. One of my favorite characters dead in the dirt. And Tyrion, my favorite, is sentenced to death by his own father.

This might be an unpopular option but Oberyn is a very rare case for me, I liked him in the books but he's prob the only character who's on screen version I liked even more, Pedro Pascal simply killed it & imo brought something unique to the character that worked perfectly on screen even. This episode is both one of my all-time favorites & worst episodes combined, the episode was near perfect but watching it I remember having this feeling of dread almost cause I knew what was gonna happen to my boy lol & up till that point Oberyn was by far my favorite character on the show & I knew this would be his last episode. If only the rest of Game of Thrones was as great as seasons 1-4 were!

Tywin Lannister's death is what ended Game of Thrones for me. Then, the show began to really deviate from the books and started snowballing downhill very quickly when it came to the writing and even the way certain characters were cut out like Jeyne Poole who only appeared in the very first episode of the show or were killed off like Ser Barristan.

However, it did without a doubt, impress the hell out of me. Extremely well done. 👏👏👏. For me though, I wasn't taken aback by the Red Wedding. Too much was going on. Where as the Viper fight was so intimate it made it much more exciting. And, I was very disappointed that Aria through Nimeria didn't rescue Cat who then became, Lady Stoneheart. That was when I lost faith in the show. Although, the show as a whole, was still the best televised event ever. 👍☮️

Book-wise.... everyone viewed the Mountain as this unstoppable warrior. He was a badass you could just never hope to defeat. But then Oberyn showed up, and the whole equation changed. Dorne wasn't completely invisible to the Seven Kingdoms, of course, but they were a sort of separate country and there was a lot of separation between the two, so champions of one weren't quite as reknown in one country as another.

Am I one of few who was disappointed with mountain versus viper fight scene in GOT season 4? It was actually a very short fight scene that lasted only about 3 minutes and was not nearly as intense as the way the book did it.
In the book, it was much longer, bloodier, suspenseful, entertaining, grittier, unexpected and more realistic.
I don't understand why HBO (who already had a reputation for taking creative risks) couldn't allot just another 15 minutes to be more faithful to the book regarding that iconic scene.
