- With the announcement of 99 Cents Only Stores closing, patrons who depend on the retailer’s cheap pricing are concerned about what to do next. Gordon Tokumatsu reports for the NBC4 News on April 5, 2024.
I love the 99c stores. There are plenty of products and it can't be matched by Dollar Tree or Dollar general either by the price or the variety of products. Few years ago, 99c stores also upped the price of most of the products. But it still offered lot of great bargain priced items. Dollar Tree may pickup some of the 99c customers but Dollar tree doesn't offer fresh produce.

It's a terrible shame that the 99 cents only stores where they are located will be closing. I have bought all of my shaving creme, filler lined paper, ink pens,Comet & Ajax cleanser, envelopes, wedding gifts, birthday gifts, bread,rolls,hot dogs, school glue all at an affordable price. Being a Senior citizen the 99 cents only stores made life a little easier for Senior citizens, the Working Poor & Working class, the unemployed & their employees. I will miss them and so will all of their other customers.

These days the 99 cent store isn't so cheap as they were way back in the day when all the products actually were 99 cents. These past couple years some items cost the same or more than places like Walmart or your standard supermarkets. I honestly have found better deals at Walmart.

The main reason for the failure of 99 Cent store is private equity bought out the founders and the company was saddled with debt. Then, within 2 years they fired the founders. It was a slow slide downhill from there.

Very few items at any dollar stores is cheaper than major grocery stores and other big box retailers. It was before COVID when the majority of items were priced around 99cents but now even items that seem cheap are actually more expensive because the quantity is much smaller. However I am surprised the 99 cents company owners chose to close rather than sell. I’m sure both Dollar Tree or Dollar General would have acquired them if given the opportunity.
And how would you know? Have you ever shopped there? I have shopped there regularly and I can tell you the prices on household items, hygiene items such as toothpaste and cotton squares has been between 15% and 50% of the price I would get at any grocery store or even at Walmart.I have bought organic fresh fruit and vegetables at my 99 Cents store. The truth is they do not want us to survive. They do not want us healthy they want us poor and dependent on government subsidies or dead. People need to wake up already.

The tweeks won't stop stealing and causing problems at ours. They even broke the toilet somehow while doing tar on it and leaving needles everywhere. I used tobhave awesome memories of that place, almost 20 years ago, but I get it. I am still upset, but I understand why.

spent about 60.00 a month till the orig CEO passed-then they introduced items over 1.00.I had a list to get things but it got smaller and smaller as they would not carry it anymore,it got smaller in size or the price became more tha the grocery store-about 2yrs ago i stopped shopping there for good

When corporate companies like Tesla, Google, Amazon get tax credits and reimbursement from cities and counties to maintain employment in those locations. That corporate welfare only goes to enrich the already billionaires. How about helping these corporations that help the needy with their lower prices. It's a struggling world out there.

When bleach, batteries, and crazy glue stopped being .99 I stopped going there. If Dollar Tree can maintain just a .25 increase on the same products not sure why they could not as well. A lot of their prices went up and stayed up. Too bad for the communities that rely on them. At those locations, the prices must still be reasonable because the couple of stores that I had gone to the prices were not that reasonable especially when the quality of the item is .99.
On Monday the Dollar Tree turned into a $2 $3 and $5 store

There's plenty of 99 cent stores all over. I live in the high desert in Hesperia and the city has a hold on any new dollar stores or whatever they're called now being built.
There's no "changing consumer demand" the company is just cheap
There are more of the other dollar stores, not less. If these places are so busy, why are they closing? Anyway, I've been in them a few times. The stuff didn't appeal to me. It's cheap because the stuff is cheap. Things are also packaged differently. A smaller size doesn't make it a bargain, like buying four eggs. You can find better quality and prices going elsewhere.

Long story short - All these dollar stores chains over built and thus over saturated the "steep discount low cost" market thinking it was a much bigger market than it actually was.
It's been coming for awhile plus they sell past expiration date and produce spoiled. The items cheap here you can get at dollar general dollar tree it'll b missed but it's not all that.

The elderly, young families and the poor are really going to miss these stores. We can thank the greedy thieves who steal without remorse and the politicians who enable them with lax laws for this. Dollar stores have thin profit margins. They have to sell a lot to stay in business. With so many people stealing on a daily basis, they cannot stay open. Of course, this is a sign something is going wrong in America!!
