    Had the same problem in my right toe. Strange it was ONLY my RIGHT big toe. I bought some Sketchers relaxed fit. These have memory foam. Since I wear a WIDE fit these were key in getting relief from the big toe numbness. I have worn them for just over a week now and have noticed my big toe on the right is not getting the numb feeling as often. The new Sketchers with memory foam really helped me! Good luck out there!

    Mine started with the big toe feeling like a string was tied and pulled around it. An MRI with a small tear in the plantar plate was found. Went to 1 podiatrist who gave me a shot between the big toe and second with no help. He wanted to remove 2 bones……..never went back. I then went to a supposed sports specialist who put me in a boot for 5 weeks, took it off and never performed another MRI. He then tried 2 injections between the big toe and second, now all my toes have a numb feeling. Now, I also get sporadic sharp pain in my big toe. I wish you were located near me! Sounds like you a doc who knows what he is doing.

Numbness to #4&5 as well as the side of the same foot is my issue for a few years now,.. the numbness never completely goes away and sometimes the numbness is very painful or uncomfortable.Any ideas as to how it happened as it seemed to just show up one morning & never really went away? Treatment options?

    The big toe and 2nd toe get sensation from the deep peroneal nerve, sometimes there is a problem around this nerve or a region near this ankle called the anterior tarsal tunnel.

      I can agree. I have developed a soar on the inside of my great toe. Been taking antibiotics for 2 months and the place only developed a big scab that refuses to loosen up. I soaked them in epson salt, apple cider vinegar, olive oil and it appears to just hinge onto the great toe. It affected my 2nd toe at first but was able to get the open place closed up. I don't know what else to do. It feels like a string is attached to my great and second toes. I'm not a diabetic, my numbers are excellent but the pain to walk is there also. It burns between the toes and I bought some toe separators, to no avail. My podiatrist only prescribed antibiotics and now he simply avoids my calls. I don't think he knows himself. Probably needs to retire. If anybody have any suggestions please feel free to post. Thanks

    Great video, Doctor. It gave me the answers I was looking for. Now I'd like to repay the service. As a teacher of Literature, I would like to say to you that the term "various different" is redundant; choose one or the other, but not both. Thank you again for clarifying why my toes are numb. I got a sliver in my big toe and I've been compensating by walking on the outer side of my foot to avoid hitting my big toe. I am pretty sure, based on this video, that this is the cause. Thank you!

  • @scottkilbergdpm
    @scottkilbergdpm  11 років тому +4

    Perhaps. The common peroneal nerve has branches that provide sensation to many of the areas you mentioned, but there are numerous other causes for all that you describe, and the heel may be a completely separate issue. Best way to know is to see either a podiatrist or an orthopedic specialist experienced with the lower leg and foot.

    Hello Dr Kilberg. I recently started noticing numbness in my second toe and the space between my big toe and second toe. I do have quite a large bunion and I’m wondering if this bunion could be responsible for this numbness. I am not diabetic and no other toe is affected. I have gone to a podiatrist and I wear an orthotic now but the toe is still numb. No pain at all.

      Aubrey, in 2008 both of my big toes were numb. Over the years, all of the toes (equally on both sides) became numb. Then the numbness spread to my feet, then to my ankles. Finally, I saw a neurologist, had an MRI of my spine, and was diagnosed with spine disorders. Had my back operated on & fixed, but the numbness in my feet remains. This causes me to be unbalanced. with difficulty in walking. Back surgeon told me that I should have been treated in the beginning when just my toes were numb because it is highly unlikely that I will ever regain feeling in my feet. See a doc---don't wait too long to correct the problem, like I had done!

    Dr. Kilberg, I am a 52 year old male, and in great shape. I lost feeling in my right big toe last January, during a P90X workout. One moment I was fine, and in the next I noticed a distinct numbness. Nothing has changed in 12 months. I lift, run and play a wide range of sports. An ortho specialist checked it out with x-rays of my foot, and spine, and a separate electronic nerve test. In both tests things looked good, with no obvious orthopedic signs of problems, and the nerves to my leg working with no signs of damage. I do have age-related degernation of the discs. Another doctor (who happens to be my urgologist), recommended that I go directly to a neurological physical therapist, and so I am. Is this a smart move, or should I visit a neurologist, or podiatrist, (which means I'll get a MRI)? Thank you for your suggestion, and again any advice given will very basic and I will check it out with my regular physicians.

    • @scottkilbergdpm
      @scottkilbergdpm  10 років тому +2

      There can be many reasons for a solitary numb toe, including damage to one of the finer nerves that provide toe sensation on either side of the toe, as well as an area called the tarsal tunnel and less commonly an area called the anterior tarsal tunnel (whose nerve gives sensation to the inner side of the big toe towards the 2nd toe). Back damage can conceptually cause solitary toe numbness, but this is uncommon. Other diseases and some medicines can cause foot numbness, but it is uncommon for the symptoms to be in only one toe. Nerve conduction tests do not typically give information on whether there is intra-foot nerve damage, and there are some nerve conditions that will never show up on these tests, which show only substantial damage to the larger nerve fibers. Sometimes an MRI can help, but imaging of toe nerves is tricky, and may be more useful to see if there is any obstruction in the tarsal tunnel areas. If you have not actually seen a foot and ankle specialist, I would suggest you start with that, as there may be elements of a finely detailed foot exam that may lead to the discovery of the cause of your symptoms.

    Hello Scott Kilberg..My feet/legs fall asleep sometimes within seconds of sitting "Indian style"if you will. At this moment in time my right big toe has been numb for almost four days now. I do suffer from cervical spondylosis, gout, Painful Tmj, migraines, as well as arthritis flares all the time. I've been in chronic pain since around 5 yrs old. I was a gymnast, and was very rough on my body as a youngster. I know some of my issues worsened from my lifestyle. But I guess I was born with some conditions I have. Anyhow...I'm used to my feet/legs always falling asleep on me, but not my big toe for this long of time. I do have severe plantar fascitis in my right foot. I was given strong cortisone shots in foot, and it didn't touch the pain. So to sum it up. I'm just wondering if you would suggest me go to my Doctor asap., for it may be something more serious? Perhaps an organ's (infections) like kidneys for ex. can cause this? I know kidney problems may sometimes be unknown in a person. Thanks for your time.

    I have a question. I am noticing on both feet, the bottoms of my toes, could it just be the shoes I am wearing? so I the past year or so (and I do play lots of volleyball) well several times in the past year or so the bottoms and sides of some of my toes where getting brown spots on them, even recently. and I did rest hem, but now the bottoms of my toes (underneath/bottom, but more in the location of between the foot and whateve ron your toe is the equivalent of the knuclle, although I sometimes get a little bit on one or 2 every so often in the toe part/top) but mainly the spot I am speaking of. the shoes I am wearing are probably over a eyar old and I wear them all day every day, and they are a bit worn down, I even had to duct tape part of the inside of one just to keep it in tact. my running shoes are 3 years od, but in good condition. I do always wear socks. and the thing with these toes the most recent feeling began mostly a couple weeks ago after an arctic blast. I did'n't actually get frost bite, but anyway, I am wondering what that is, and if perhaps the shoes may be the issue

    Can a planters wart cause tingling and pain???

  • @gottakristaoluhan9717

    Oh god, so I was skating and fell over a flower pot ( yes ) and hurt my leg bad. (I can walk without any problems it just hurts when I touch the area) and when I got home I went to bed pretty quickly but noticed when I was walking that I can't feel my toe on my right foot. It's not that I can't feel it but there's a small area where I can still feel when you're touching it but not as much as my left toe. It feels weird then I'm walking and many said it might be because of the fall, I might've hurt my leg so bad that I damaged a nerve.

    Dr.Scott, I fell on my knee & foot a few months back (the fall was like in baseball when a batter slides to a base.) Moderate walking & standing is tolerable & I ware a ankle brace for my labor intensive job. My foot tinglings, has a mild burning sensation, numbness, and stiff. If its really hurting my whole leg hurts and aches up to my thigh. It seams to be getting worst latley. I now have constant tingling, burning, & numbness around the heel, ankle and the outer top/bottom side of my foot now (the last 2 toes are completely numb and get very cold on & off threw out the day.) I feel like I have only 3 toes I can sometimes feel. I have carpel tunnel in my hand & that's what my last 2 toes feel like when I try to close my foot or flex my toes. How can I fix this?

    I wore high heels yesterday to work and was walking back and forth constantly. By 4:00 p.m. I couldn't walk anymore. My toes fell asleep instantly. Today my toes are still asleep. That's pretty much what led me here.

      If you are still having issues with your toes, that could indicate a more serious nerve compression issue from your shoes, and should be treated.

Does anyone know what I have? (I have just bought 4E wide joggers, but what the heck is it?)

    Hi Doc,
    I am 44 and about 30lbs over weight. About 3 years ago I started to get a numb foot pad on the right side and hard to tell but big toe and maybe second toe was well. Over the past year, the left foot pad is doing the same. The feet look fine and I have a pulse on both. Toe nails look healthy. Over the past 3 years I have had my blood tested often and always came in under 100 for fasting. Any guesses? Docs seem to think its my back since I have L4-5 S1 issues. Any guesses? Thanks

      I have the same thing. I went to a neurologist, waste of time. I'm going on 6 years where the bottom of all toes on both feet are numb. I do have a bad back. Oh, it started on the right foot, big toe. Then it spread to the other toes. Same story with the other foot.

    Just had surgery about a week ago l4 spine. Experiencing numbness originally at base of toes 2 &3 .now it's around my 2nd toe entirely and hoping someone will lie to me and say eventually it goes away. Cuz it messes with my balance quite a bit. Thanks. I was kidding about the lying part.

      Has the numbness subsided or gotten a little better?
      I see your comment is 2-years old, so I decided to ask & I really hope that your numbness has gotten better!
      I’m dealing with Heel/Pinky Toe numbness, I had surgery on my L5-S1 Disc that was impinging my Sciatica nerve, which caused the numbness
      I’m 13-days post surgery, and I’m still experiencing the numbness, I was told it can take a loonnnggg time to subside, if it ever does

    • @LansingJP
      @LansingJP 5 років тому

      And I know what you mean, about hoping somebody will “lie to you” lol, it really is HARD to accept that it may stay like this
      I’m hoping things gotten better for you, and I look forward to your reply
      If it didn’t get any better, may I ask how did you come to terms with it? I guess it’s something I better start practicing, that it may stay like this 😢

    I’m suffering from a numb heel & pinky toe
    It started once i had this issue from from a impinging of my Sciatica nerve from a disc herniation of the L5-S1 disc
    I ended up getting a Diskectomy, I’m 13-days post operation, and I’m still experiencing the numbness
    Can that numbness eventually subside?
    I really hope so, I’m praying & I haven’t given up hope

      I hope mine don’t get worse, I hate to hear your foot numbness got worse after surgery

    • @LansingJP
      @LansingJP 4 роки тому

      Jim McC actually... the thought was that my foot numbness is either getting better very slowly over time or I’m just getting use to it
      I hope to god that i don’t start thinking it’s getting worser... from time to time I think I experience sciatica flair ups from over working my effected leg
