I just wasn’t expecting this
Bill and Frank!😭
Bill in the game is a bitter reminder of what happens when you refuse entry to anyone.
Bill in the show is a gentle reminder of what happens when you let someone in.
Beautifully put 💙
@@ReelRejects yeah
The last of us games : Bill is alive and Frank is dead
The last of us series HBO: Bill and Frank are dead
Well what the heck !!!
@@rockerojerez349 in the game Bill is rotting away fortified and surviving, but suffering for driving away Frank to his death; he’s a glaringly obvious foil for Joel, who takes his cautionary tale to heart and starts trusting Ellie after leaving Bill to reset his traps and ache
Flawed conclusion.
In *this specific case* it worked out letting someone in. In reality, it tends not to work out that way.
@@ym5891 dude go smell a banana fart
This show has everyone on UA-cam crying, and unable to put into words what they have witnessed. It's incredible. Nick Offerman deserves an Emmy right now.
100%, both of them acted their asses off. This was as good a love story as the first 5 minutes of UP
Emmy, Golden Globe, SAG award, Critics Choice... IT DESERVES THEM ALL 🙌

Bill knew how to survive.
Frank knew how to live.
Well put!
Bill knew how to live also ... his cooking, music & gardening! He just didn't have anyone to love.
I love how everyone has the same reaction to the flashback.
"Oh noo, its a child/baby skull"
*shows the mom and baby*
"NOOOO WHYYYY??"
2:05 “We’re not going back to the past to crush my soul?”
Oh buddy 😭❤️
Yep. Be careful what you wish for, John :)
Right? Show went from beginning with a flashback to making everything _but_ the beginning a flashback.
fr...im like "oh boy"
It was a very small moment, but when Bill said "I know I don't seem the type" and Frank said "no, you do" it made me very emotional. A lot like Bill, I'm gay but I come from a very different background than many in my community and to be seen like that and told you are enough is so meaningful.
❤
I’m the same. I am straight passing and I came out later in life. I’ll never forget the first time I told someone and they said they knew; I felt so seen.
I’d also paused the show earlier to see if Bill and Frank were canonically gay in the game so there were signs earlier, but that’s what solidified it for me, that’s when I knew they were going to get together.
@@crystalpritchard5065 Same, I'm from Alabama, have a thick southern accent, and still love sports as much as I did when I was 10. I live in Portland now and I get seen as a straight redneck.
You don't know me but... **hug**
@Crystal Pritchard the idea of "straight passing" is so odd to me. Like is it automatically assumed you're not gay unless you speak with a feminine voice and paint your nails?
Bill’s cry-chuckle at 16:58 is the absolute purest and sweetest thing, it feels so genuine
Isn't it? Like a child. Love it!
That made me tear up, I'm glad we saw a softer side to Bill than in the game. 🥲🥲
That’s my wife’s favorite part of the episode
Right?? I swear they asked them not to eat strawberries leading up to that part it was so genuine
its so cute yet so real. nick offerman please step up to receive your emmy
I had no idea that Nick Offerman had that kind of emotional range. I’m used to seeing him in things like Parks and Rec style comedies and a more deadpan humor
Greg Mazin said in an interview about casting Offerman that comedic actors are often able to bring really emotionnal stuff when they are outside of their confort zone
And having a straight dude to play a closeted virgin gay man was perfect because his awkwardly shyness looks genuine during their "first date"
I get that. I felt Bill’s anxiety through the screen. Mad props to both of those actors for doing a phenomenal job with such emotionally uncomfortable scenes.
Yeah but what about Niel Druckmann ?
He's really great in Fargo (season 2).
Most comedians are deeply emotional and very sensitive; that's why they make so many jokes.😉
Me when the opening credits began: “Aww man, I guess we aren’t getting a flashback in this episode.”
Me afterward: “Oh, the episode IS the flashback!”
Remember the last of us games no aren't getting a flashback because Bill is alive and Frank is dead
The last of us series HBO is the flashback because Bill and Frank are dead
What the heck !!!
this episode broke me. absolutely beyond brilliant - elevated by source material, enriched by originality.
Something tells me you're more liberal on the spectrum of ideals.
It takes a real man to appreciate an episode such as this.
i love this, yesterday i did edit about them, i would really appreciate if you go and watch it on my channel
@@ivankawnartist oh my god shut up with the political shit and just enjoy the movie lmao. You're so weird no one was talking about that
@@ivankawnartist its no about being “liberal”. It’s about appreciate beauty. Beauty doesn’t recognize genre or sexual inclinations. Watching this episode you can just sit down, cry, and thank.
@@yeticonfettis Oops. I guess someone is upset.
“THE GOVERNMENT ARE ALL NAZIS!” Had perfect comedic timing lol
Broke my heart when Joel referred to Tess as "mine" - he can't even say the word 'girlfriend ' or 'lover' because of the walls he's built up. I agree this is one of the best written episode of television ever. I've seen a handful of reactors complaining, especially cuz they cut Bill's interaction with Ellie, but I've also seen the word 'woke' being used, and it makes me sad that they don't get it. I've played both games, and this is excellent and fleshes out everything so much more than the games ever could. The story is what made the games so memorable and the story is still there. 💯💯💯💯💯
This episode absolutely destroyed me. Their love and devotion for each other was so special. I lost my wife after a short 5 years of marriage and knowing that I would never get to experience this sort of love again ripped my heart out, yet I can't stop watching people react to it. This is a masterpiece.
I'm sorry to hear that, man. Love is still out there, even if it's not romantic. Hope you're doing ok.
I thought the same thing that I'm just a masochist watching these reactions over and over again. But for some reason I like seeing people responding the same way i've been responding. It is cathartic and I feel better after a cry. Maybe I needed to cry for a long time? I'm sorry for your loss though. People do grieve in their own way, and maybe this is helping you?
Watching people react to it is basically all I’ve been doing too, and it’s really the only way to experience it again for the first time, if only vicariously. And that connection of seeing those same emotions in others is a really comforting thing for me.
This episode is such an amazing gift and I’m so grateful for every moment.
@@georgia2321 im pretty much on a reaction marathon & thats a great way to put it. i've already watched it twice myself but watching others watch it I can see it 20 more times without getting sick lmao
The beauty of this episode is how completely different it goes from the game. Everyone, including those of us who've played the game, got to watch this beautiful story for the first time and feel the raw emotions that came with it.
That's what's great about this show. Its faithful but will take liberties when they think they can create something great. I love this show.
Useless epsidoe not only is this not part on the game but this just proofs them psuhing their gay agenda. Ehy have this 2 characters if they just gonna die its a waste of 1 hour they really dropped the ball on this one
@@crow_g1639 Yeah this one was a waste of time. You can just skip the gay romance and jump to Joel and Ellie in the truck driving and it would make no difference.
@@commycasty you guys will purposely miss the point because it doesn't fit your views LOL bill and frank's entire arc is there for the development of joel. we saw them fight and care for themselves so strongly during such dire times, which joel then sees and internalizes at the end of the episode when bill's note points it out. we also got such fun backstory for a character that we didn't know much about. if you want to see the game, play the game
@AceKonn Rivet, just like you can skip to Ellie and Joel getting the car in the car without hours of killing infected and it would make no difference in the game.
I love that their last meal together is the first meal that Bill ever cooked for Frank, complete with the same wine. This is completely different than Bill's story in the game, as Frank was only briefly mentioned when his body is found after their falling out. This is so, so, so much better. It is my favorite episode so far. I sobbed like a baby for almost twenty minutes straight in this one.
It's worth pointing out that while Bill is paranoid and even sadistic with his traps, that short scene with him and Joel shows that even compared to Bill, Joel is a menace; he says "there will be raiders, they'll beat your fence and your traps, they'll come at night, quiet and armed". I 100% believe he's speaking from experience as someone who has beaten fences and traps, sneaking up at night, quiet and armed.
Everyone gets mad at Ellie for looking in the basement, but that’s the only way to find hidden items
Hahaha absolutely fair 😂

Murray Bartlett is such an underrated actor. He is a generous actor and that give so much to his acting counterpart to play with. I've seen him in four other series and he is consistent if not excel in every role he was given.
Don't really think he's underrated, he just won an Emmy.

27:57 The window at the end was a great nod to the game's main menu I think
In episode 1 there were also some Window shots
That was confirmed, the writters wanted to end (if my memory's correct) every episode with a window shot, like the menu screen of the game.
Give Nick Offerman his Emmy. Great episode.
Offerman’s giggle is so precious in the strawberry scene.
It's beautiful how Bill's life got even better after the world ended. He was able to be himself, find love, and live a fulfilling life together, and gone on their own terms! I honestly don't think I have ever seen that in a show about the Post-apocslypse
John: "We're not going back to the past to crush my soul??"
The Show: *GOES BACK TO THE PAST EVEN MORE, AND CRUSHES HIS SOUL EVEN HARDER*
I spoke… MUCH too soon 😂😂😂
This episode is super important to the story because this is where Joel sees that even someone like Bill can be vulnerable to the right person and their lives were better for it. THIS moment is what allows him to open up more to Ellie, and look at her more as a person to care for rather than cargo.
I hate that people are saying this episode is just filler and doesn't progress the plot. Like yes, it absolutely does. Game Bill showed him if he didn't open up he would be like him. This Bill showed him he needed to open up like him. We absolutely needed their backstory to make it more impactful and I'm so happy they went this route
@@Peeplii Straight up it is one of the most important parts to Joels developments. For the first time it did not feel like pandering too
i went into this episode waiting for bill and frank to be what they were in-game: dead, bitter and lonely. so glad they went with this route and gave bill a happier ending
Was that what happened in the game?
@@pohanahawaii yeah, in the game they have a fallout at some point, Frank leaves their village and gets infected, before he turns he writes a nasty letter to Bill then h*ngs himself. Bill becomes worse then he was before Frank, more bitter and shielded. Joel and Ellie meet Bill in the game and we find Frank's remains and the letter.
@@fauxsorcier : 🙏 Wow, that is quite a change! Except probably not seeing Nick Offerman again, I quite enjoyed this TV version.
I kinda wish we got this moment in the game where we play as Bill for an hour or something short but told well. I think playing his character instead of experiencing his character in cutscenes would have been nice. Kinda like when we played as Ellie during the David stuff.
This was so much better than what we got in the game.
Probably the most important episode for Joel's development! He needed to hear that letter.
Are you insane, Joel's developement. He was in it for 10 minutes while the rest of the episode focused on 2 gay bears barebacking during an global catastrophe, hahahaha, honestly.
@@Ajax295 In the game, Bill is a reminder to Joel; shows him the person he would become if he shuts himself off to ever loving again. Here, Bill knows how to survive same as Joel; but eventually learns how to live. It's what Joel needed to hear.
@@Ajax295 me when I'm illiterate.
I like Ellie's fascination with the Infected because like, she's supposed to be one right now. It makes complete sense.
"we're not going back to the past? To crush my soul?" foreshadowing
My favorite part was Joel laughing at something Ellie said while in the truck leaving town. Bill's letter hit home thankfully.
did you like this episode, as someone who hasn't played the game i love this episode and this series so far!
Yeah, I liked it a lot. Beautiful storytelling!
Ellie interacting with the truck was funny Bill and Frank having a moment over the strawberries 🍓 was nice
The scene after Joel reads the tess safe part was such great acting with him holding in the tears, Pedro is amazing.
Then going out the door onto the lawn they had dinner a few years ago must been hard for Joel he had too take a moment. But I believe after seeing Tess have faith in Frank and Bill and Bill having faith in Joel even when he didn’t like him that much Joel kinda came around to Ellie there.
This episode was so rich and heartfelt but this episode altogether did the character of Bill justice. So good.
Ya know, I went into this episode knowing that all the internet people were really sad and I was a little way through and thought “ I know something will happen but it won’t effect me”….. then he payed out his plan for the day and I fucking broke, it was such a lovely scene and the whole montage following I was in tears. Then when Joel and Ellie showed up I thought I’d be able to keep it together but then that final shot came and I went back to tears
I like how assertive John is when he's running the show.
The power of Greg's seat.
I noticed that about a year ago... that Greg always talks first and then John tags what Greg said
@@qcrew2938 Both the Alba brothers have a habit of talking over their co-hosts
No spoilers for you guys. But, this was basically a completely different storyline from what was in the game. That being said, it was a beautiful episode. Lot of tears in this one.
The tv show and game are so different you can talk about one or the other without ruining anything. The show is glossing over major parts of the game.
@@Dustyphoto915 because this is a show and not the game
I’m also not mentioning the differences between the game and the show because John or Tara could play the game in the future. I know John has expressed his interest in playing it. I’m not going to spoil the game for him.
This episode forces you to appreciate the small things in life with your partner. So emotional & amazing
“Love in the time of cordyceps” John you did not 😂
Choosing to die together in bed almost of old age on their terms in a zombie apocalypse is f’ing beautiful.
Death was coming for them and every other scenario was horror.
They won the end time.
It wasn’t though? Clearly they survived 20 years without any real threat due to his setup. Just saying…bill _technically_ could have gone on, maybe the horror you’re mentioning is living on without his husband.
this is probably my favorite reaction to episode 3 so far (and I've seen a lot haha). I just love how you both were rooting for a meet cute from so early on and how invested you were in their love all the way to the end. I was bawling like a baby from the moment I saw Frank in that wheelchair until that final shot through their bedroom window. such an incredible performance by both actors and a beautiful story of love that I never thought I'd see in a show about the apocalypse ❤
This is easily my favorite episode so far and counts as one of my favorite shows already. This is where the heart of show kicks in, Bella is getting more and more charming as Ellie
I loved that this episode showcased something so simple and universal about the human experience - the need for connection, even if it comes later in life and during an apocalypse.
These two both deserve Emmys!
This is one of the parts in the story that they changed the most from the game due to limitations in different types of media. No spoilers for those that want to play it - but the game there are many backstories that you learn about not through flashback, but through finding notes and diaries and journals and reading them - but that doesn't translate to a show very well, and in a show, you can spend time in a flashback w/ someone other than the player character so it let them tell the story of Bill in Frank in a way that they weren't able to before. Cheers.
I love the strawberry scene. Their acting was really great with how they reacted to eating strawberry after a very long time.
The smiles on your faces when you started seeing where this was going…❤️❤️❤️❤️…this is one of the most amazing love stories in tv that I’ve seen!
I've always thought that these zombie-apocalypse or catastrophy-centric productions seek to emphasize that: Yes, we are but speck of insignificance before Mother Nature's infinite might, but maybe in these moments of tenderness and beauty in the midst of brutality, we are briefly at her eye level.
I like the way they did Bill and Frank's story in show more than the game because the characters get fleshed out a little more instead of being in one part of the game. Also crazy how good the show is doing that it already got renewed for a season 2.
You guys were so cute at the lunch scene. "Love during the time of codryceps." You cannot market you mold and called it "Imoldin', as a lame attempt of a play on words for 'Imagine what you can do with mold".'
"What is Ron Swanson doing in the apocalypse" Exactly what Ron Swanson would be doing in the apocalypse.
We need a John and/or Tara playthrough of TLOU when the season is over!!!
This episode was NOTHING like the game ... and I am SO not mad about it! My daughter and I watched together and were both like "Now when I see the game again and get to Bill and Frank I will point and say "That's not how it happened!! Bill and Frank had till death do us part!!!"" This is now our canon for Bill and Frank!!!
Love is the central theme of the show, and that isn't always a good thing. Some of the most horrible things could be motivated by love.

When Joel explains how the pandemic started, did you notice that he ended on pancake mix? What was it his daughter wanted to make for him for his birthday in episode 1 but he said no? Told me a call back. Shows How Deeply he still thinks about her.

"We're not going back to the past to crush my soul?"- famous last words
I can’t stretch enough how much I really needed this episode and I think the fact that I’ve never played the game somehow made this even better. Truly a gift.
Play the game. You get more story, emotion, insane visuals, and the game also has the freedom to be action packed and tense and fearful. Do yourself a favor. Play the game.
@@Dustyphoto915 Oh I intent to, no need to convince me. But knowing now how both frank and bill end up in the game from what I’ve heard, I prefer infinitely more their story in the show.
@@barbastos The game is incredible and the show is really similar to it so far, but the fate of Bill and Frank is much better in the show than the game. Definitely recommend you play it if you get the chance
Stories in the game are hidden in letters, which makes collecting them are reading through them becomes just as precious.
When he said "First, my name's Frank" and tried to smile, I immediately fell in love with Frank.
To the question of “how is this in the game” I’ll say that almost exactly none of this is in the game, but damn they took these characters on such a beautiful arc that is equal to if not better than the game, and for a die hard fan, that is an incredible thing to do.
At least bill and frank lived a better life in the HBO show than the game's version of them..
That "press x to fall in love" joke nearly took me out 🤣
The version of their story in the game is a lot more tragic and dark. This was a beautiful love note to the possibilities of what could have been, and to the character- giving him a happy ending
No way Bill is standing in the middle of the street sniping the raiders. He would have shot from cover. He was too tactical for that. Only negative in the episode. Now back to finding that cat that made my alergies spike up and then make my eyes extra watery for a moment.
I've seen a lot of people are calling it tragic and sad, but I think it was more happy than sad/tragic. They got to pass in old age, after a long life where they were loved, with agency and dignity. This is something neither queer nor disabled, characters are usually granted in media.
The apocalypse happened in 2003. That is the societal framework they are coming from. One where gay marriage wasn't legal. One where initial meetings were often conducted through coding because being too open, too out, was dangerous. Especially in a small town. Bill probably had more genuine social interaction after the outbreak than beforehand. Because of small town stigma and pre 2003 socially acceptable homophobia. From this perspective the apocalypse gave them a chance at life they may not have gotten otherwise. Bill likely never would have known love.
And Bill and Joel became friends. Even if they didn't want to call it that. Joel had the codes.
The show story is exploring how love and relationships can be toxic. And this was a beautiful juxtaposition to that. I know it is different from the game, but I don't think it took anything away from the game. You still got to meet Bill - just Bill ending in a better place than game Bill. [In the game their relationship didn't end well, Bill is still alive but Frank has committed suicide and you find the body]. Joel and Ellie still got resources. And it was changed in a way to enhance the story. And game players get to experience something new. In the context of queer representation in media, including the "kill your gays" trope, I really appreciated this change. And the lack of bodies was really respectful of the story being told - it wasn't a story about their death. It was a story about their life and love.
Indeed. Bittersweet is the word I'd use.
“I'm guessing you found this, Joel..because anyone else would've been electrocuted or blown up by one of my traps" Hehehehehehehe
Its insane how even when they took out something so significantly, what they put back feels additive. It feels like its making the stories of both the show and the game richer at the same time.
This is completely different in the game, they only hint at them having a relationship when they find Frank, Bill says he was his partner and that’s all you get but by that time they hate each other, totally different situation.
Absolutely magical television. Sheer perfection. Can’t possibly say enough good about it - I really think this is one of the best episodes of tv ever made.
The creators did a very great job, they made us cry as fuck for two characters that we saw literally in that episode! It's so good
The song during the wedding scene is Max Richter - On the Nature of Daylight if anyone was wondering. ps. This was by far my favourite episode yet.
it's the way how all the girls recognize Bill and Frank's attraction to each other before the guys in most reactions but yall caught on at the same time and were kinda fan-girling and fan-boying the whole time😂
In both the game and the show, the segment begins with them on the way to Bill's in Lincoln, and ending with having secured a battery, truck, supplies, and heading to the next segment. What happens in-between is different.
The primary difference between the two is one of theme.
In the game, Bill is alive when Joel and Ellie get there. You get a little bit of backstory and find out that Bill never opened up and Frank wound up leaving. That part is a fetch quest to go locate a battery so the trio adventure through an infected town (and it's really fun). You actually find Frank's dead body and a suicide note that he was bitten by an infected after getting the battery to leave the town and how much he hated Bill at the end because he never changed and Frank wanted more from life. So, in the game, it is a cautionary tale for Joel that he can't remain closed off forever as it'll only end in sadness.
Instead, they turn the game's negative backstory for Bill into this beautiful story of how even if you love being (or need to be) alone, opening up to affection and love can make you more vulnerable but make life fulfilling and worth living. It is that lesson that actually convinces Joel that despite his constant failures that he still has a purpose; with the parallel and contrasts between Bill and Frank's life fully lived (despite all of the hardships) in the last twenty years, and Joel's, one that has only barely been lived in the last twenty years.
The end result of both the game and the show is that through Bill's actions Joel finally accepts the goal of getting Ellie to the destination and treating her as more than cargo: without a doubt, however, the show's version is emotionally more powerful and positive.
That being said, I think each version works best for the medium it's in.
I think Ellie was trying to look for any ounce of humanity left in that clicker. She got a rare opportunity to be up close to one
I saw someone comment "Bill is who Ron Swanson would have become had Leslie Knope not come to the Parks and Rec department"
It’s so nice to enjoy this with folks who haven’t played the games. So awesome to see the emotion and surprises! Especially this episode!😢

I love having a handy way to make myself full-snot cry when I need to drown in endorphins.
The beauty of this episode is that it subverts our expectations. We've been conditioned through modern storytelling to fear everything, especially the benign, the innocuous, especially in this particular genre of horror, so when we encounter a story about caring and trust and commitment, we don't know how to process it; it hits hard. 'I was not expecting this' seems to be the most common refrain. This is a series about a 'zombie apocalypse' where anyone and everyone can go from being a loved one to a mortal threat in an instant and yet this particular episode is about love, matrimonial and romantic; a masterpiece.
This is one of the best stories ever told on film, in my opinion and it's based on a video game. We've come a long way from Pong.
This was such a great episode! I loved the actors and the chemistry. The story added so much to Frank and Bills story
We appreciate your reactions. Keep up the good work.
i have watched so many of the ep 3 reactions but both your takes are the most nuanced yet. love that you immediately picked up on the romantic tension, how you talk about the subversion of expectations with Bill and Frank's love story, and acknowledged how ellie was born in a world of infected and so she would be fascinated by them, rather than just always scared. 💜💜💜 following you!
I’ve watched the episode itself, Greg & Andrew’s reaction, and now your reaction and I still cry every time during the “last day” scene/montage. This is already in my top 5 series ever.
I've been singing "Ring the bell" randomly all the time since last week's episode
OMG, this is the 13th (I think 😅) reaction that I've seen to this episode and I don't think anyone else uttered the phrase Love in the time of Cordyceps and that's kind of criminal 😅
On another note I still haven't broken the pattern of crying with every reaction video, this episode has me in tatters, I love it so much!!!
This couldn’t be more different than what happens in the game … this is exceptionally better tbh
The more I think about it, she must really HATE the infected because of Riley. And really HATE the infection because it isn’t affecting her 🤔
I definitely feel like she feels guilty for being alive
(Detail from the game)
At the end she says "I'm still waiting for my turn" which always hit me 🥺
Great episode, great reaction... but also omg i love those espn classics sketches with Sudeikis and Forte a lot, what a shoutout!! Whoever edited this, great taste!
Linda Ronstadt is trending on Twitter, and her music is skyrocketing on Spotify.
Haha 2023 has found it’s “Running Up that Hill”
Great reaction to this episode John and Tara
