  • During our dive of an unnamed seamount in the Pacific Remote Islands Marine National Monument (PRIMNM) we encountered marvelous critters of all shapes and sizes. In this supercut you can spot gelatinous jellyfish floating above the seafloor, sponges standing tall like underwater sculptures with intricate lace patterns and high-density colonies of coral. You will also witness some beautiful geology of this ancient volcano including eruptive fissure and columnar jointing from magma which rapidly cooled during an eruption 80-100 million years ago.
“You can’t protect what you don’t know,” said Malia Chow, Habitat Conservation Division branch chief, NOAA Fisheries Pacific Islands Region. This is why NOAA Ocean Exploration supports our joint mission to characterize this region of the US Exclusive Economic Zone and record geological and biological findings. E/V Nautilus is exploring unknown regions of the ocean seeking out new discoveries in biology, geology, and archaeology. Join us 24/7 for live video from the seafloor and to ask questions of our explorers currently aboard Nautilus: www.nautiluslive.org.

Adorable. That little jellyfish looks so happy just floating around in an underwater playground.

That closeup of the sponge @ 3:00 just wow!! It’s like delicate filigree, or actually it also reminds me a lot of paper mache :)

Thanks for the observation depth! And thank you for filming the live excursions as well as editing and uploading videos like these! You guys have the coolest jobs, it’s got to be wonderful to love the work you do. Hopefully I’ll get to that point some day.

I could watch for hours and hours! I always wonder what the animals "think" of a bright light suddenly appearing in their world. I'd also love to hear facts about the substrate, the water temps, the pressure.

Some of the fish look strangely unfazed.

The deep ocean is like space but a million times more awesome 👏.definitely connected to a another dimension or something we need to learn the bioluminescence language or learn what the humpbacks 🐋 are saying or talking to in a higher plane of existence lol 😂 jk

@@dannysullivan12345 I think both space and ocean are mind blowing places. But hey, don't knock the idea of attempting to communicate🤣. When I was young I wanted to be a marine biologist and research communication with marine mammals through music. But it was only a small group of hippies that were discussing this at the time so my parents wouldn't allow me to go into the field. Just think though- how totally cool it would be if we could figure out how to communicate through bioluminesence! We used to have such conversations for hours when we'd trip on acid or shrooms. I don't think the subject is outrageous anymore.

Does anyone know what the creature at 4 min mark that is using some kind of web structure to anchor itself is? Someone says "Stichopathes" but seems like that might have been for something in a previous shot.

What's the animal at around 4:25? They say earlier that it's Stichopathes, but I looked up that name and Stichopathes is a black coral which is nothing like animal with a spider silk like structure radiating out from it's body like the one in this video.

Does the current at that depth affect the surface current, vice-versa, or one has nothing to do with the other?

There are no heely FIAG. Fiah have eyes, scales, dins, and gills. This creature is a sea jekky. or even more accurately a sea aspic.
