The way this story unravels always struck me, and the first time I read it I was completely gobsmacked by the end. What other great last lines do you love in literature?

That's funny, yesterday we were discussing Roman Fever by Edith Wharton, and then came across this Today. So here's a reply a year later ! I know this story, and look forward to hearing you read it when I get the chance.

Can it be true that unrelenting poverty and toil can not dull one to beauty, but cause one to hate it?
It's not an uncommon plot line, was life really that brutal?
I'm pretty certain I wont like the answers.

And I was about to object to the portrayal of the men in this story, but on consideration I will not.
