Very helpful commentary. My paternal grandmother (born 1901 - 1986) lived that isolated life on a farm. Then my paternal grandfather got a job at a post office is a larger town. I understand my grandmother more now. The importance of keeping a clean house, dressing every day and home decorating. Those things values are foreign to me as a CPA (1987 to present). Thanks for sharing your analysis. Watched your video with my college student daughter as she is learning about the play.
I also noticed that the men in the play are quick to criticize a dirty towel or make fun of the process of making a quilt when these are luxuries that men enjoy when women are around... does that make sense? I guess it kind of perpetuates gender roles to a certain extent, but given the time period I think it makes sense. I could see that the two women would want to stand with the murderess after the men have criticized the work and chores that women of this time period are set up to do.
I had to write about this play for my gender and literature module a couple of years ago. This video’d have been so helpful! Thank you for all the information you share with us! ♥️
This is an excellent resource! I'll be teaching this play for the first time in my Literature course this week, and was looking for more perspectives on it and some class discussion starters!
The women basically investigate, try, deliberate, and find Minnie not guilty or at least justified. The quilt or Knot question is really a guilt or not question.
Great insight and analysis! I was able to connect with your perspective in the play and was able to get confirmation on a lot of what I have in mind. ❤❤❤
Ive always thought of the bird different than most. I thought of it as the man buying it for her. As one of the few times he'd spend something was to mock his wife unintentionally or not by reminding her that she was caged. Like a bird. That is what broke her.
I watched this video for a couple of times, for my class and exams. Thank you so much you're a great help❤ I hope you keep making more videos
